I remember the first time I heard this was in my Dad's car on the radio. We had gone for a drive in the countryside and both heard this for the first time. We were so overwhelmed with it ,we couldn't talk for an hour afterwards!
Would be the word of some uncivilized modern caveman
"Beauty put into song" are my words, rather unfortunate people nowadays don't bother listening to these forgotten composers. Congratulations to the 52,248 viewers
I like this piece, quite a bit. I tend to loose myself when I listen to it, though. Somewhere between meloncholy and exultation. But if I have to be lost, I suppose there are worse ways of doing so than meandering with Mr Mahler's sublime voice. Bravo Herr Mahler. Bravo.
@keiji4956 cotinued, This performance is like Solti.Clear sound and clear understanding of this tune... Soltis .clear answer of this tune..Respectable performense I felt
@schiolde -- it seems to me this tempo is appropriate for the composition. I've always heard it slower tempo and now I understand why I felt something missing.
@scottishhotshot72 Great suggestion! I was always a die-hard Wagner fan, and was devastatingly and sadly behind on discovering Mahler-who is now one of my absolute favorites! Needless to say- if you like one of them, the other probably isn't far off!
I simply can't get enough of this piece of music. It's amazing. I've been listening to it again and again and again. And I'm not even that fan of or expert on classical music.
I show the movie Lorenzo's Oil every year in my Health class and this piece is played toward the end of the movie and I tear up every single time. Stunningly beautiful!
Few pieces of music ever written are this beautiful !! The sound quality of this recording is awesome. With my surround sound speaker system, this is just stunning.
This music (usually played this slowly for dramatic emotional effect) was Gustav Mahler's "marriage proposal" to his wife-to-be. He sent her the manuscript - alone, no notes, no letter accompanying - to her.....she read it, understood it, and they wed. No speed-dating, no sexting, no Facebook, MySpace.... how we have 'progressed'?
@JonEngland Thanks so much for your explanation. I always felt that this peace had to do with a romance in a beautiful garden at the begining of the century, where a couple met in a bench and he declared his love waiting anxiously for her answer....The music is just a universal love story! Thanks again for your coment!

Barber's Adagio for Strings is very emotional. As is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6 (I'm not exactly sure which mvt, but it might be the finally. Which ever one is adagio.)
nowadays many people try to switch off their emotions (and ya cant blame em) !! - this piece music resists that tendandcy. And for that, as well as many other reasons I vote this one of the most beautiful pieces ever. thx 4 up load!!
@MrBeethoven333 Music doesnt just have a mood. Pieces, or pieces like this anyway, are written to convey words that cannot be told in words. Just try and feel what Mahler wants you to feel.
OH HEAVENS, this movement is always the highlight for me in this piece. MAHLER was a genius making these melodies, and harmonies. and i love that the 1st violins aren't always the ones that keeps the melody throughout the peice. lovely cello soli. beautiful viola entrances. just so BEAUTIFUL
What is it that makes this so unpopular? That makes classical music so unpopular? There's some sort of evil in it, I swear. So much more intense, so much more depth. But what is it today! "The most relaxing classical vol. 2" That won't show people what music is, it distorts the image of music and makes the world think that classical is soft and boring. I thought the same thing until I discovered music... The world today is sinking, and we all must try to save it.
not so much "evil" as there is "love" or "passion". it's not really unpopular as it merely just more ignored, as unpopular would mean there's a negatvie stigma attached to it, whereas classical today is more looked at with a kind of respect, yet also more like an obscure historical novelty.
@otherjoe1234 I'm quite positive that 'unpopular' means what isn't popular, not something that isn't popular because it's bad. I think when something is ignored, it's usually ignored for a reason. I don't know why you're nitpicking my post.
Also, I didn't say people don't respect music, I just said that people don't like it and that the crappy little walmart compilations mislead people.
@JohnEBPiano OMG I agree with everything you said. Indeed, it's very annoying when people think that all classical music is soft and boring. The harmonic intensity in classical music is unbeatable, and I agree that there has to be some evil that makes classical music unpopular.
Mahler was, in my opinion, the greatest composer of the 20th century. Artists like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber get so much more credit than Mahler, and they don't deserve it.
wonderful, yesterday I heard this long time loved song in a ballet and ran to buy and download the song, but its a little difficult to find, thank you for providing such great quality!
This is one of my all-time favorite pieces of classical music-ever! This is so beautiful and moving, and this particular recording by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Sir Georg Solti is the best! I first fell in love with this when I heard it (this recording) on one of the Hearts of Space programs on public radio years ago. I am always glad I heard and found this awesome piece of music.
@renfieldpumpkin I can't dispute that statement. It's interesting to see how many different tempi are adopted for it by many great conductors. Solti takes a middle path.
@renfieldpumpkin oh so true... so very true... lost a friend from suicide today... this is just how I feel... bless you, Gustav... you knew how to make the human soul talk...
if love could be heard, this is what it might sound like.

Sir George Solti is the greatest conductor of the 20th Century -- he beats Bernstein hands down -- I saw Sir Solti in Chicago back in the 80's.
