how the fuck are people trash talking anything by this band?? o yeah they arent people they are actually self-fisting jack moron robot bitch scum, thats right i forget how lame youtube gets when my internet gets cut off. suck one if you think NOFX isnt great. PUNX-NOT-DED!
I am a fan of punk music but I am a firm believer that if you are going to cover a song the performer must analyze what the composer is trying to convey with the song and THEN put their own twist on the song.
I do have to give these guys credit. It is a ballsy cover and the bass line is somewhat original but it contains no essence of the original meaning of the song.
When I perform this song I put every ounce of feeling and meaning into my trumpet and cary a conversation with my audience about the meaning of the song.
Yes this IS a punk cover, but even punk bands can put great meaning and emotion into their songs. Not every punk song has to be a nonstop attack to the face...
...This song holds such a nostalgic value to me as the first Jazz chart I ever memorized and this cover just absolutely kills it for me. Louis Armstrong and every other great Jazz performer that ever recorded this song is now either greatly offended or turning in their grave because of this cover.
And totalrecall49... how can you even say that this is a perfect cover? What is your background that you can make such a claim? Have you even studied jazz or its performers?...
I'm sorry.... I'm all for artist's representation of songs but this is my absolute favorite Jazz chart and this did absolutely nothing for me. They could have at least put some sort of dynamics in the cover of kept a bit of the melody.
The only reason that I found out that this cover existed was because there was a link to it off the original "All of Me" Wikipedia page and really I don't understand why this cover has its own Wikipedia page.
@trossitrumpet Ok...I hear what you're saying. But I think you're focusing entirely on what they've taken away and not noticing what they've added.
And the crap you said about "Every great jazz musician" being offended at this is obviously a completely over-the-top statement. The point of jazz is to play from your heart even if it flies in the face of convention. THAT is what every great jazz artist has done, and that is what Fat Mike--himself a student of jazz--has done.
@JLittleBass I really appreciate your response and I really made me think about what I was trying to get across.I do have to admit that when I typed all those comments I was a little bit drunk and I tend to really get into my arguments after a few drinks lol.
The main part about the cover that made me angry though was the complete loss of the rhythm and feel of the song, but then again that is how punk songs are played.
@trossitrumpet And besides, the melody he sings is different but it still fits perfectly with the changes. It's like a solo over the changes...like a jazz solo...so for you to claim to understand jazz while not appreciating the inventiveness of what he did with this tune makes no sense to me. You probably got turned off by the harshness of his voice and didn't notice how brilliant his note choices actually are.
@JLittleBass Hopefully I can get a chance to listen to this cover again soon but as of right now I don't have the time to listen and analyze again. I can only offer this short comment, but a full one will becoming soon. :-)
@trossitrumpet you need t get off your high stoll with your setting at, you act like you know a lot and im sure you do... but in what youve learned in your lifetime, at age 22 you and even i have a lot to learn. Its a different style of music honoring a song that they respect and love despite their different genre so maybe you should do the same. and maybe post a vid or two to show us how good you can play that trumpet, im just sayin.
I was skeptical when I saw this being this is one of my favorite standards but I actually really enjoyed this version. Maybe its my love for NOFX or maybe they just did a good job
I really, REALLY pray you guys are all kidding when you prefer this to ANY competent musician's version. They butchered this. This is a godamned disgrace. If I could give something negative stars, this would be it.
And don't anyone dare fucking post something about 'chilling out' and being open to interpretation. This is musical incompetency at its worst.
Again, for those of you watching this video because it was on a playlist for HIST 1568, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong are said to have popularized this song.
r3venge it's not a Sinatra song, either. It's a standard written in the 30's... Sinatra covered it, so did Billie Holliday, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, Willie Nelson (gotta admit his version is very good) and NOFX obviously. It's one of my favourite jazz standards. The NOFX version sounds just as I expected it to. :P Don't get me wrong, I sometimes like punk.
apparently shoegoozer must be a genius!! he knows stuff about things! i like how ppl live fake lives and brag about dumb shit on youtube! if ur not a gangster that kills and sells drugs your a badass pro musician,or that u play with more pussy than a ginacoligist! YEA RIGHT! "/s"tick that up your ass fruit loop!
You don't gotta dis NOFX cuz homeboy here opened his mouth...
Ella and Satchmo did their thing then, and NOFX did theirs . Most people wouldn't have listened to a good old standard like this had it not been presented in a contemporary way for them. I personally love it.
really, a great cover.

All of me, why not take all of me
Can't you see I'm no good without you?
Take these arms, I want to lose them

Your goodbye, left me with eyes to cry
How can I go on dear without
You took the part that once was my heart.
