Since I'm practicing this piece right now, I can tell you, they are. They most certainly are. But the rest of the movement is pretty easy, so it's like Shostakovich's apology to the cellist for putting you through that.

Yep. probably the most difficult chamber music passage for cello i've ever played/seen (did it about...5 years ago). Utterly unforgiving - but yeah, the rest isn't bad! Gorgeous piece.
