@eirefrance Everyone's in a cult. In so far as people link their individual identities to those of the groups they fellowship with they are in a cult. it's just that some cults get so big that they are made "mainstream" or the "norm". in catholic dominated Europe people who wanted freedom of religion or freedom FROM religion were seen as heretics and could be killed for it. why? because they weren't the norm. you call people cultist but what are you in the scheme of things are you in one? maybe!
yup another ex socialist here, brought up thinking like a lefty, even took a course in sociology a couple years ago, personally i think awakening from socialism was the most liberating thing in my life, i was kind of brought up subconsciously thinking that my life was already determined and that i couldnt change myself or my situations, waking up for that is like realising your future is a blank slate and you have the chalk, cheesy as that sounds.
I love Stossel's show. He is so different than the other talking heads on tv. He actually discusses ideas and the philosophies behind those ideas. He doesn't dwell on the personalities of the players involved.
The government creates a state of slavery - how? by creating a state of dependence and lack of ACCOUNTABILITY. THIS is liberalism {also known as SOCIALISM}. The socialist-dependent motto is "don't think, don't question, just follow."
Here is the perfect reference in a qote from the great Adolf Hitler
"What luck for the rulers that men do not think", OR, as Henry Ford said "Thinking Is The Hardest Work There Is, Which Is Probably Why So Few Engage In It."
Mamet's point about Taxi Cabs is 100% accurate. I worked in Community Development and programmed the fee structures for 100's of communities. The Taxi License can run a company 5 to 6 figures. When you look at the licenses that cost a small fortune they are invariably Unionized. Big Labor uses politicians to force people into poverty when extortion, threats, vandalism, and assault doesn't work.
If you are intelligent, as Mamet is, and exposed to a wide range of opinions and you honestly consider them...it is impossible to remain a liberal or a conservative.
@EGarrett01 wrong look up sowell. Now there is a huge difference between abachmann conservative and an actual conservative. See real conservative may believe in that social stuff (gay marriage, ect) but does not force their beliefs on another by the use of government power. See the thing that libertarians get wrong like ron paul is defense spending. Now before you get started I don't agree with our neo con policies like all of the bases in countries or wars but he will cut much deeper than that.
@EGarrett01 lmao did you bother reading my comment? No he is a conservative one of the smartest ones and clearly you are so quick to call him and idiot when you clearly don't know him which makes you a fool. More proof libertarians aren't as open minded as they claim to be.
I did read your comment and that is my reply to your comment. Anyone who doesn't support personal freedom is either unintelligent, ignorant or not intellectually honest.
Whichever political view becomes dominant, in the end the distribution of people opened to new ideas stays the same. If libreterianism ever becomes the "main thought", you can be assured that most of them will look at it in a religious way as today's liberals do.
@EGarrett01 That's part of reason. I considered pretty much all the points of view I could. A reasonable man or woman would consider all the viewpoints in politics and take the best.
@EltonJThe "A reasonable man or woman would consider all the viewpoints in politics" This is patently false. You are talking about being opened minded, that is not the same thing as being reasonable. In fact the two are usually but not always at odds. Being open minded is no badge of honor, you reject the rational in favor of the irrational as much as the reverse. There is no BEST viewpoint in politics, there is one viewpoint and that is to enforce your own morality on others.
@Huboons Whoa, hold the phone. I don't do that. You can't really do that to a person. That's an externalizing of power. I prefer the Love method -- best way to change someone is to love them. That's internalizing your power and you exert a great deal of influence on your quarry.
@Huboons Pretty much. I've never seen a good government social program. If Defense for the common good is a social program, it's the only one I don't oppose.
@Huboons In other words, I don't have time for sophomoric to-and-fros on YouTube. Look, here's a starter: World War II. Ever hear of it? Or let''s go even more literal: ending the slave trade in the civilized world, first in England, then in the U.S. The founding principles of this country, the U.S., were dedicated to protecting the individual from government. The fact that we have strayed, almost from the beginning, is irrelevant to the principle. R u suggesting anarchy? Govt by warlord? 'Bye
@RickNewYork100 "I don't have time for sophomoric to-and-fros on YouTube." Apparently you do. Please explain the mechanism by which government ended slavery. You have not done so.
What I still don't get when I hear the stories of these people is why. They have the brain-power to understand the problem. In fact there is nothing complicated in refuting liberal idiocy about economics. Why do these people have to be confronted by an event or individual to hit the wall of reality?
I suspect there is some serious brainwashing going on that leads people to block out sceptic assessment of reality and logical argument.
@scepticsteve In Mamet's case he was raised as a liberal Jew in Chicago in the age of discrimination when Jews and blacks were openly excluded. so I assume he bought into the governments role to end discrimination, civil rights, support of Israel etc etc.
he sounds like a troll...

Damn, huge props to Mr. Mamet! He's clearly very well read on subject matter, which may have lead to his change of mind.

I know Sowell. If he believes that the government should control people's personal lives such as who they can marry then he's idiotic.
