I think people should have the right to block traffic if they are protesting too, I remember a speech by Naomi Wolf about her book "Give Me Liberty" where she describes the fakeness of activism. There's no need to get violent. Civil disobedience, when done right (the key word is civil), is a great way to demonize the authority in the eyes of the people. While I don't agree with all of his beliefs, it is worth reading about Gandhi. He overthrew the British without firing a single shot, by simply making them out to be monsters in the eyes of their own people.

Also, Gandhi used civil disobedience against a *completely crippled* post-wwII Britain and he had millions of culturally similar people who followed him. If you know anything about the British Empire and how they operated you would know for a 100% fact he would have been immediately executed had it been in say, the 1980s.

Civil Disobedience *ONLY* works when the people you are being disobedient towards are *ALSO* willing to be generally civil too! (meaning no executions, torture, etc.)

I don't disagree. Things probably would have been more violent in India had it not been the 40's. Remember that a govt can only exist with the sanction of its people. You're at the point where the masses are still largely apathetic. If you resort to violence you will lose support, not gain it. What you really need is to get the military on your side. If the govt. loses the support of the military then it's all over. Perpetual pointless wars + bad economy can turn a lot of vets and masses.
