While I don't condone a lot of the comments on here (union & management; strictly antagonistic), I think you should know that Bell will not be contracting to outside companies in the event of a strike/lockout.
(I could be wrong but I think it's illegal for a federally regulated company to do that.)
That's why Bell Management will be backfilling if the strike/lockout happens.
Let's all hope that cooler heads prevail and this situation is resolved at the table!
Bell contracted out in the last strike in 1999 or 2000 can't remember which year. I would know I made a lot of money unless it was all a figment of my immagination. Some of the guys worked during the strike I waited until it was over as I had a conscience back then. I don't anymore.
I can't comment on the '99 strike but I've heard from different people (managers, techs who worked the ETS strike)and they seem to all say that Bell wants management to cover this one.
Not sure how Bell-owned companies like J&D Systems factor into this (non-union) but I've heard from people at those companies who say that their contracts are done if a strike happens.
I suspect it depends on how long a strike lasts, customer loss, etc. You know Ted Rogers is praying for it every night!
In the end, the control center can send any jobs to any techs they choose. BTS techs are always willing to pick up work and they get all the OT they want when a strike is on.
Also, bell techs in the last strike were stupid enough to picket the ETS garages, which doesn't make it so less work gets done, it just ads to ETS tech's payrolls.
