I agree with @Invisus944, this is a recording by Rozhdestvensky and USSR ministry of culture state symphony orchestra. I believe this is the best Shostakovich's fifth!
I like his music because it is clear and light. His music is not dark and not mixed with many factors. I feel that his symphonies are almost similar to Waltz.
"Since the Stalinist assault against his music in 1936, Shostakovich had developed a sort of double-speak in his musical language, using one idiom to please his masters in the Kremlin and another to satisfy his own moral conscience as an artist and a citizen. Outwardly he spoke in a triumphant voice. Yet beneath the ritual sounds of Soviet rejoicing there was a softer, more melancholic voice--the carefully concealed voice of satire and dissent.. "
we're playing a band transcription of this in the top group at my high school, this piece is amazing with or without the strings. this is also the only version i've ever been able to find (besides my band's) where the trumpet solo sounds on beat
The timings don't seem to be right though- there's a part of this one missing at the end, but I don't think it would feature around 30 extra seconds to match the 11:27 in the recording you're talking about. I want to believe you, but, well, lol, I just wish the poster of the video would maybe post what CD he ripped this from.
What a damn fine version.

Shostak looks like he's on a news broadcast about to announce the end of the world.

John Williams copied some parts of this song for his star wars soundtrack lol. Especially at 02:30

Personally i think Bernard Haitink's version on Shastakovich's fifth is much better.. this one is great but its slower than what it should be.

Terrible. This is probably the best version I've heard of this movement and no one knows the conductor/orchestra.

It's very similar to the one i have by Naxos label. The conductor is Ladislav Slovak and the orchestra is the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.

@luxmundi6 Judging from the coarse brass section and the sound of strings, it might indeed be the Slovak Orchestra..

@Invisus944 my guess would be the leningrad phil...they have a similar recording, and mravinsky does all these tempi.

our high school orchestra is playing a simplified arrangement for this, but the original sounds a lot better.

So is ours, much slower for that matter too.

conductor might be mravinsky. not sure, though

Who is the conductor, and which orchestra?

@RADAMES1983 I don't know as you guess. If I find the name of either the conductor or the orchestra, I'll soon let you know it.
