@Deel2506 Of course his elocution is impeccable - he's Irish! We Irish speak English better than the Brits. That's why Irish actors are cast in lead roles of British characters (Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry the VIII, Richard Harris as Dumbledore, .......!) But forget the elocution - gotta love that Irish wit, right? :)
When Peter says granddad at 1:40 is he saying he was shocked at being a granddad or was he referring to something else? I was a little confused by that remark.
Despite all the years of alcohol abuse, he is still sharp and very clever. Imagine just how clever he must have been as a young man, before the brain cells started dying off. He remembers all his old stories of his misadventures and enjoys them as much as anyone else, which is why you have to love him. He is one of an age when people lived non-apologetically.
O'tooles nationality seems ambiguous to say the least ,apparently he 'claims' not to know where he was born - Connemara ,Ireland or Leeds , England yet he was certainly in England from the age of 1 onwards; so whether it suits his pretensions or nay, culturally he is English.
@flerb nice of you to want to claim him . . . but he was born in Connemara, Galway, Ireland. The house is still there. He moved to Leeds when a baby with his parents and returned every summer to Ireland. He then returned more full time on and off all his life.
@Tonyo1221 All you've done is repeat what I said, the fact theres a family house in Connemara is irrelevant.
If O'toole truly does claim 'not to know' (source wiki) then it proves no more than that Connemara has an enthusiastic tourist board. So he' returned every summer.' did he ? What when he was 2,3,4,5,6,.....!?- I've been to France 'on and off ' but I'm not culturally French.Or do you assert that your culture/nationality is based upon a place of birth you can't even remember?
@flerb All I'm saying is he was born in Ireland . . . your talking about "culturally" . . . well "culturally" with a name like O'Toole what culture do you think he is? Anglo? Anglo saxon? or here's a possibility . . . IRISH?? O'Toole?? Get real dude . . .
@Tonyo1221 Your confusing culture with genetics. Seamus O'Murphy was born in London, his Grandfather told him tales of how his own grandda came over in 1850 to escape the 'the Great Hunger' and married a local lass Jane Bull. Their sons followed suit marrying local lasses. What nationality, genetically is O'Murphy? He's 97% 'English'!.
Of course thats one end of the scale but it proves the point: The sexist arrangement distorts the statistical reality - surnames do not prove ethnicity.
@flerb Genetics are your DNA make up, ie do you have French parents, Irish Parents or English Parents? Those are Genetics. If your born in say Ireland, and raised in say England you can claim your culture as English . . but it doesnt change the fact that you were born in Ireland and are Irish.
Apart from that, I never heard O'Toole identifying himself as anything other than Irish. I never heard him interviewed where he identified himself as English.
@Tonyo1221 A] Yes I know what genetics are mate, I was simply pointing out that your surname proves next to nothing about your ethnicity .. ie the name O'Toole doesn't make somebody Irish. And birthplace + nationality aren't automatically the same thing either , as countless Brits born in India, Africa Hong Kong etc show...
@Tonyo1221 ...B] I'm not saying hes NOT legally Irish I'm just highlighting the eye-raising ambiguities and saying that IMO he cannot - whether he wishes to or not, deny being culturally a product of both England and Ireland .(Though I concede I should have been more clear and said "whether it suits his pretensions he's culturally Anglo--IRISH (i.e not just English)" in the first place. {As I am myself in fact.)
@rosasmellshaha You must be joking. Letterman is the best in the biz. Peter and Dave together are truly brilliant. O'Toole speaks so highly of Letterman and that is high praise indeed...O'Toole is a tough customer who rarely appears on chat shows.
it's fun to watch the effect peter has on his interviewers. even charlie rose treats peter so deferentially, aware that this person sitting in front of him is intelligent, wise, irreverant and could blast him out of the water and over the bridge with a simple lift of an eyebrow ~
Letterman is usually a buffoon at interviewing, but here at least he knows a class act when he sees one. Phew! To wit, no one does it better than O'Toole.
Peter O'Toole doesn't really care about the Honorary academy award he'd prefer to get an academy award for portraying a character instead of one for his career
@slash4689 No worries! Here's a quote from the legendary Richrad Harris "When I'm in trouble, I'm an Irishman. When I turn in a good performance, I'm an Englishman." It's true and you can watch him say this in an interview on you tube. If I find it I'll send it on!
@martythetickler O'Toole is of the same ilk as Richard Harris who was offered a knighthood but refused. Harris said "I will bow to no man or woman". Irish yes :))
Listening to Peter OToole reading ANYTHING literally anything is an amazing experience. He's a true actor capable of richly interpreting every word, either it belongs to a poor or fab. script.
I love how the audience seems to laugh more at the awkward pauses than at the actual funny things that are said. What's great is that I'm sure Peter is creating these pauses somewhat on purpose, just to not put the interviewer at ease, and that Dave does not get aggravated by them but continues on unaffected! :)
Hehe this was not an easy interview, in fact probably one of the most awkward that Letterman has ever conducted, but he pulled it off nicely, it's lovely seeing these two interact.
O'Toole is the kind of guest that make a talk show. People that have stories to tell, who have lead interesting lives, made something of themselves, and are able to put these experiences into coherent sentences. Compare this episode to Snooki's fist pump... good grief!!

He sat on the table next to me at The Ivy once. We both left the restaurant in pieces. As we were both leaning against the wall outside we looked at each other and smiled. Great great man. Love him to bits.
Last of a glorious race of comedians gone forever. Fences with Letterman with such wit and elegance! Put most of young actors in his place and what do you have? Shallowness and intellectual poverty.
Very well said, my friend. Today's actors are all about the gym and protein shakes. They focus so much on their physical appearance to try and make up for what they are truly lacking: talent.

@kcirdrab You could live 500 years, your stories would still not reach the greatness of O'Toole's.

He sat on the table next to me at The Ivy once. We both left the restaurant in pieces. As we were both leaning against the wall outside we looked at each other and smiled. Great great man. Love him to bits.

8 times he has been nominated for an Oscar, and has never got it. One reason why, I won't be watching the Oscars, ever.

How this wonderful man never won an Oscar outright is beyond me. Such style, talent and wit. A national treasure!
