  • When you drop a compressor in a column does it automatically apply to the three clips in the column? Can a have a different compression with different settings for each clip in the column?

  • really nice tutorial

  • cool vid, i had no idea you could sidechain a filter like that.

  • my question is how did you get that big bass sound?

  • Perfect tutorial, thanks!

  • anyone know how to do this in live 5?

  • Really helpful, thank you!

  • good tutorial.. very helpful! and important

  • helps a lot

    good tutorial

very professional....even the little electro track

  • chompy410 if you knew anything....which doesnt seem to be the case. you would fucking know that you can control those aspects. and it works just as well as logic and pro tools if you know how to use it. so dont go telling people something that is from you understanding and doesn't obviously tell much.

  • Typical ableton live sidechain that sounds LATE. That sidechain in Live just doesnt work. LISTEN, its late, its obvious.

Ableton need to design another sidechain compressor because that one is crap. Damn its obvious that thing doesnt work right. It makes the groove akward.

Notuice how the whole sidechain was quickly skipped over. YEt its the production technique that everybody wants to use. I dont blame this guy, but he knows.

    CONT

  • If you want sidechain that works an doesnt mess up the groove like abletons one there are only two that work spot on. Logics and Pro tools. I never tried Cubase so cant comment.

Never trust your sidechain to ableton live, you will get the groove right

The best sidechain you will ever get is from a real compressor with side chain facility. The difference is amazing.

I know I went on a bit here

  • nah man, sidechain does work and is on time

his attack is 4.3ms in that

his 2-8ms values is bs. 0.01 all the way

also, if you find it comes out of the sidechain too late, adjust the release

there's nothing wrong with its compresser when its sidechained

  • I agree, the default compressors that come with pro tools and logic are great. I am a pro tools user. I will never switch.

  • It's not usually the tool, it's the user.

  • idiot

  • @chompy410

Its because of the attack and release times he used obviously you tard...

  • helt me alot understanding compression, good tutorial:)

  • To get the daft punk sound one can also do what daft punk allows to happen: They simply mix the drums waaaay loud and then compress the final mix. The result is similar to sidechaining, although harder to control.

  • lol

    nah

daftpunk sidechain compress the whole track (which is common with electro etc.)

in fact, you'll find it in 90% of electronic tracks, but its not used as an effect, but to create space (usually) for the bassline/kick

p.s. making a phat kick drum is not simply putting it loud.

  • I don't disagree with you, but I didn't mean to say to simply put it loud.

At subtle levels it is better to create space with sidechain, but at extreme settings, as in dance tracks, the result of sidechaining hard to tell appart from setting the kick way louder, then mastering the mix with two compressors. The first with a TH between the kick and the rest. The last a limiter set to taste. People without access to sidechain comp would probably want to try this.

  • you mean like compressin the whole tune to it like does that clipping duck? like when you overload?

not sure what you mean :S

(not trying to be deliberately caustic btw)

  • col video is this a dvd you can buy somewhere???

  • i love ableton

  • damn i jst got a Tone Port ux1 from line 6 and i am SOOOOO confused, i downloaded ableton but it says i have the lite version..but i got it from guitar center, anyways i need to know how to start recording some guitar tracks. can anyone tell me how to do this. it all seems really complicated

  • GO ABLETON, YOU ROCK!

  • thanks for the excellent tutorial, very detailed and easy to understand now

  • Awesome, guys. I've had a hard time grasping the compression concept and you explained it pretty easy. Now I have a better understanding and can use these techniques for my application, where I've obviously needed it bad. You guys make an awesome product. I love Live.

  • Terrible sidechain, always completely off beat. The free vst "SideKickv3" does that a lot better...

  • How much REAL do you need? lol

  • A profound way to get more room in the spectrum.

  • ableton is the shiz, you guys spread the love !!

  • Very sweet - thanks! I love that French house sound

  • awesome, im downloading live 7 now

  • completely legally of course.

  • wtf you tard, did you not notice who posted the video? ABLETON

  • very cool! thanks for the tips!!!!

  • Awesome! Finally you talk about compression! ^^

    Cheers from Brazil!

  • Brilliant! NOW i know what a compressor does.

  • Quality!

  • These tips/tutorials are great.

  • nicely done
