  • What a vintage scene in the retro American films!

  • anybody know the durbin film where she was in the park with her fella and after he kisses her says her lips were so bitter. She says must be the poison I took then they have a wide shot of the park and there are many couples and all the men sit up and say poison did you take poison and all the girls laugh at the joke.

  • @Lesqueek Yeah, that's a funny scene from the movie is "It's a Date" (1940), with Deanna starring opposite Walter Pigeon and Kay Francis.

  • The greatest version !!!

  • She really did look as great as she sings!

  • What a voice! Such a gift! Thank you so much for posting this. :-)

  • will any of present day "stars" be loved so much as these of the 30s & 40s in another 60 years?

  • When I think of my mom, I think of Silent Night, and Deanna Durbin does it the best!

  • The most beautiful version of silent night I've ever heard.

  • Nice to see/hear a real talent after having to watch people like kathy griffin, rachel madcow, rose o'donnell, etc, hog the scene.

  • @joeasmythe This good singing actress was a favorite in movie theaters years ago.

    Very nice!

  • another example of why I choose to live in the past, and I'm only in my early 20s lol.

  • shes prettier than marilyn monroe

  • this is from a time when men were gentlemen and women were ladies. so sad to see how people are today. i so wish men and women were like this generation, real honest clean living people, who you could rely on. unlike today.

  • @tomato6999 I don't know where you are from, but this generation isn't as bad as you make out, although I do agree that a certain quality has been lost, a certain quality that is found in abundance within this clip!

  • Beautiful song, gorgeously sung, and an even more beautiful singer. Quite a combination.

  • oh now this is what i call a lovely looking girl singing with a voice of what i can only say a voice of an angel wow

  • Thank You so much... Merry Christmas

  • When my brother died I got a sudden urge to watch Deanna Durbin. I bought her box set of 19 films, I watched them all over one weekend. It took me back as a little gir watching them with my nana.

  • Really wonderful thank you.

  • she is still alive too must be over 80 now

  • Lindo, beautiful! :D

  • This is soooo beautiful!!!!!!

  • Most sensuous rendition of Silent Night I'ver ever seen. I love it!

  • Lord have mercy Deanna Durbin is beautiful all over.

  • What a beautiful woman. Her voice is wonderful.

  • This is amazing... I need to find myself a CD of her music or something.

  • I have searched for this song by Deanna for many many yrs after seeing the film. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • i played this at christmas. you know there was not a dry eye in my house this is so beautiful and sung so beautifully by this lovely young girl. i do so wish people of today were more like this.

thanks so much for this vid

  • Very gentle, beautiful and full of peace and love....

    thaxs,

    john

  • Deanna what can i say - simply stunning. Love this film

  • brilliant

  • Simply lovely....she captures the song so well.

  • "Lolling on a bed, she sings Silent Night to her father by long-distance telephone" Ha, I thought she was singing it to her lover

  • It is time for Time magazine and most of the other media to quietly pack their bags and steal away into the night. Journalism is dead. It has become nothing more than a propaganda tool of the far-left. I hope they don't let the door hit them in the azz

  • we were brought up on Deanna by my mother. She attended movies 3 times a week in Dundalk Ireland and Deanna was far and away her favourite.Everytime I play this clip it's for my late Mother. She has awarded it 10**********.

All Deanna's films are available on pretty competitively priced DVD's.I bought them for my 30yr old daughter who granma managed to imbue with the Deanna Durbin bug.Mam it worked.

  • I WANT TO SING LIKE HER T-T

  • Stunning! Brava! TY.

  • deanna was terrific an unreplaceable

  • lovely voice wil play this at christmas

  • Remindes me my youth, when we saw her pictures, encorage me to visit America

because I thought findig in every girl the angel looks od Deana

  • One of my favorite songs, and beautifully done. Did she ever do my other favorite, Over The Rainbow?

  • Time panned her?. That is a compliment, as Time is on a par with newsweek, NY Times, etc. They like only garbage, Deanna is too classy for them.

  • i loved this movie, wish i could find it she was so beautiful and man could see sing

  • Bubba - this movie is available as part of the "Deanna Durbin Sweetheart Pack" - six Deanna Durbin movies, including this one. It costs around 20 US dollars.

  • really pretty

    :]

  • Deana is alive and well living outside Paris. She retired from films in the late 40`s and never went back to Hollywood(she found the place back then as all to phony)

It would be great to see her get an Honorary Oscar--long deserved. She was the STAR of Universal Pictures--the highest paid at the studio-400,000 per year. I love her films.

  • it warms the heart to listen to a class act ...a rare breed these days i'm afraid

  • amen to that friend

  • I remember watching a movie one sunday afternoon with my mum while making sunday dinner, It was a Deanna Durban movie and i have never forgotten her voice, it's like heaven listening to her sing, Thanks for posting the vids :)

  • i think this generation was the last of the most beautiful and real people unlike today i look at her and think yes a good clean living person

  • and yours is one of the finest comments i have read in a long time. :)

  • And I agree completely with you both! (and I am a young man). It is a pleasure and a relief to read so nice and clever comments. Tx

  • Sadly, about 1/3 of the comments I get are crude and vulgar. That's why I chose the option to approve all comments. Just about any video you go to on Youtube has a bunch of foul-mouthed cretins saying tacky things - but not on my channel!

  • Well said, most of the foul mouthed idiots wouldn't know a decent singer if they were stood next to them.

I never heard of DD until recenlty (beleive it or not) and I am pleased that you have given me the opportunity to listen to her beautiful voice.

    Thanks

  • @violinthief If only everyone did that then YouTube would be a far more pleasant place to visit!

  • She was my late father's favourite an excellent singer and actress.

She will always be missed but her voice will live on forever.

  • @leejohn70 she's not dead

  • WOW! She's gorgeous! I have only seen her movies up to 1939. I like her with light hair. This song + her voice = heaven

  • Thanks for the nice comment, Tori! I envy you - there are a good dozen Deanna Durbin movies you have yet to see. The one this is taken from, "Lady on a Train", is perhaps the one movie that could be classified "screwball noir". I think you'll like it. Incidentally - I LOVE your channel!

  • Thanks! I think I am becoming a Deanna Durbin fan. She has such a beautiful voice. Someone posted this movie on youtube so I have to watch it now. I have to laugh at that reviewer from TIME magazine. The camera loves her.

  • I suppose I must be a "fancier of the strange and terrible". I thought it was fabulous. The camera loves her and I can see why. She is gorgeous and her voice is haunting.

  • Oh my

  • Beautiful rendition and beautiful lady. Thank you for posting

  • This beautiful song sung by Canada's greatest export is wonderful to listen to just before going to bed each and every night. It certainly helps one have a silent night knowing the words are absolutely true!

  • SINGING EXPORT you mean! Remember! Fay Wray and Mary Pickford came from Canada as well

  • The beautiful voice of America's darling!

  • Not to mention the beautiful FACE of America's Darling! Deanna was a beautiful young woman and Woody Brendell's cinematography captures her at her peak. It's an unusual presentation of "Silent Night" to be sure, but Deanna sure looks and sounds wonderful while delivering it.

  • Her version of silent night is brilliant

  • yes this young lady is a lady in every way

i just wish the youg people of today would use her as a role model if they did this world would be a better place

  • tomato. Unfortunately this is the 21st century. People like Obama are deciding how to act. They prefer the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce and Mariah Carey - all fakes. Obama has a lot to answer for. I had hope when he came in - but he is just another celebrity.

  • @tomato6999 i still enjoy these type of music sometimes, i dont listen to much music like i use to enjoy, it's just the same boring thing!

  • paulostroff. America's darling? If you mean that she is from America, true. If you mean she is from the USA, false. Deanna is 100 percent Canadian.

  • She was born in Canada but moved to the US as a baby and grew up here. So I figure both countries have a legitimate claim to her. In fact, Paulostroff is Canadian. On the other hand, his disparaging remarks about Durbin's singing abilities on the Te Kanawa Ave Maria thread I disagree with strongly. Durbin was a world class soprano - beautiful voice, nearly flawless technique. The Met, especially in the "golden age", doesn't invite mediocrities to sing for them.

  • voilinthief. Of course not. I cannot believe that anyone would dismiss Durbin's singing abilities, especially on the Kiri Te Kanawa thread. Kiri herself admits to copying her style. Both are great singers with falwless techniques.
