  • The movie sucked... The book on the other hand is GREAT. Read it and skip the film...

  • The trailer does the movie no justice :l

  • " fake somebody rather than real no body " too bad lots of people live with this painful concept in every culture . To love yourself is a bless .

  • sorry... but this movie was so gay.

  • Mr. Ripley looks disgusting.

  • lol, this sounds like the narrator from E.T

  • FANTASTIC movie and an even better book. LOVE LOVE LOVE, great cast!!!!!!!! I think I've watched this movie about 20 times, at least.

  • superb film.

  • very underrated movie !

  • Oh God I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman!

  • Tom. Is. Crushing me

  • I really like Cate Blanchett's character in here. I like everyone though too. I just think it's a small role kind of wish it was more.

  • still matt damon's best role.

  • Warning: the movie is about Faggot who kills straight guys. That's it basically.

  • @amir20851 sounds like a good one then! :)

  • @amir20851 he also kills a faggot at the end

  • @amir20851 Wow way to movie entirely you fucking arab.

  • @amir20851 Appearently you did not even watch the movie.

  • well, this looks like a shallow interpretation of the book. kinda disappointing

  • matt damon was amazing in this

  • This is a great movie, but the trailer make it look like run-of-the-mill, hollywood trash.

  • Secondo me, questo film è stato le film plus migliore di Anthony Minghella (adesso in retartdo sfortunamente). ... troppo giovane... troppo giovane

  • Great acting, great story, great scenery, great music!!!!! People are too afraid to give movies high scores so i do my best here: 10/10. One of the absolute best movies ive ever seen. The the acting gives this movie flesh, the story gives it meaning, the scenery gives it class, the music gives it soul. And what i love this music!!!

  • The only fatal mistake for Tom was that the moment he got rejected from Dickie, he should have gone away and back to America or wherever. He could still salvage his soul but he wanted the easy and good life. But when you constantly run away there is no good life. Can't blame him though. I'm a bit lazy myself and I used to hang out with people and be their leeches but I manned up and stopped those unhealthy relationships.

  • I sat next to Anthony Minghella on a flight from NY to London just a year before he died. What a cool guy and what a talented writer/director.

  • awesome movie!! :)

  • Good movie, but i think that is so unfair that jude doesnt have any academy award...

  • Gwyneth incredebly underated!!

  • what! it was a book! I wasn't fond of the trailer but the movie was worth more than the views of the trailer anyways. Must see this movie if you have any taste for good films at all.

  • What???? The hardest character to play here was that of Tom Ripley. Granted, Jude Law did well but his character (Dickie) was way easier to play than the one that was played by Matt Damon. We can all agree on this. Matt Damon deserves most of the credit here. Remember the name of the film... He was playing the main character and the most difficult as well.

  • I'm glad I watched the movie before the trailer

  • jude law. you just made me drop dead

  • alain delon did it better

  • prime example why you shouldn't watch film trailers. they dumb it down for the masses and give away the plot.

  • BAD trailer

    amazing film

  • @kbp5520 Excellent book.....

  • Oarsmack scene was one of the most shocking I've ever seen.

  • Matt is so sexy in those glasses

  • Ive never seen this movie before can somebody telle me on a scale from 1 to 10? THANKS!!

  • @030terror 9

  • -you are breaking my ribs.

    -What !..

    -YOU ARE BREAKING MY RIBS.

    love that part...

  • So bloody bourgeois.

  • Please somebody tell me why this movie is so underrated?

It's one of my all time favorites, the cinematography, the acting, the script, the drama, it's PERFECT

I'm not a big fan of Matt Damon's, but he blew me away in this.

Complete transformation, what a good actor he is, geez

Jude Law has always been this brilliant, it's nothing new to me

To hell with the Academy for ignoring these two

  • @magicprophecy matt damon should have won an oscar for this jude was good but not oscar nominated but he was still good matt damon was awsome this movie is awsome and jude law accent is hott just saying lol

  • @magicprophecy It's cause he's gay.

  • @magicprophecy I agree with everything you've written. PSH was also great.

  • @magicprophecy Read the book by patricia highsmith. It explains why the film is so good.

  • @magicprophecy maybe because it's actually pretty creepy

  • @magicprophecy cuz its gay

  • @magicprophecy I agree with everything you say. Completely underrated. Just watched this today and think that every single performance is perfect! Even Peter Kingsley Smith!

  • @magicprophecy Jude Law wasn't necessarily ignored, he was nominated. But I thought he should have won.

  • @magicprophecy . You are right. Since I see the first time this movie, I just know for sure this is a top 5 star movie. This is inside my top10 movies of all times. As you say: the cinematography, the script, acting, everything! highly recommended!!!

  • @magicprophecy what do you mean ignoring these two, didnt it state that Damon is exactly just that, "academy awarded" ?

  • I don't know how good an actor really is Law in this movie or the A.I. because he plays a similar roles, guys of much energy and charm who enjoy life.He is best in that in my opinion because he is like that in real life.

  • 1.03

  • loved this movie. another similar movie is strangers on a train, based on a book by the same author :)

  • k this is the worst trailer ever made. but this is one of the best movies ive seen.

  • dickie was such a cunt.

  • You're so white, have you ever seen someone so white? lolz, that's pretty harsh.

  • this movie is a plot surfacing under a plot. this nigga gets entangled in a web of obstacles, cutting each layer down to pieces, making way thru doors and reaching throughout destinations. very detailed movie with lots of smarts, this movie requires for you 2 think, not the godfather! how the hell do you even think in the godfather? some asshole takes out the rival families and that's complex? haha..

the transition of matt dameon was hypnotique, kinda similar 2 wood harris in paid in full

  • @Errianno i love the way the word "nigga" was thrown into that paragraph.

  • He's so cute with those glasses lol

  • Matt and Jude were both gorgeous here!

  • Tom's a hipster lol

  • I can somehow understand why Tom killed Dickie Greenleaf. He treated Tom like a piece of shit while pretending he was someone special to him. Also his a**hole friend. Sad as a chain consequence of this he thought he had to kill the only person who showed some true love and affection for him (Peter). Very sad ending. I don't even feel that sorry for Dickie's fiance.

  • @009firefox no, he wasn't meant to kill him, he can't punch, so he picked up a weapon and tried to hit him with it, the weapon had a blade on it and cut Dickie up, Dickie was so pissed off that he tried to retaliate and even kill Tom, so Tom defended himself. it was an accident... well, why didn't he go to the police? ahaha! try telling the police it was an "accident" and see how long your jail sentence will be

thru the accident, a set of events occured that gave way 2 a transition 2 Tom

  • I like those glasses

  • I love matt damon!!! go 2 hell dickie greenleaf!

  • best movie ever

  • Nobody doesn't like Michael Caine, but Law's performance here was so complete and perfect, how could he not have won the Oscar?

  • lol he killed 3 people =)

  • @kemry55 and then you screwed em!

  • @greeniem all day long =)

  • i personally feel that matt damon deserved an oscar for his performance in this.

  • @amjwUK what about Jude Law? I thought he clearly had the best performance in the film although Damon was good as well

  • Comment removed

  • @JawBreakerJimmy i do agree that jude law had the best performance in the movie. but i felt that damon breaking away from his usual role as an absolute heartthrob (goodwill hunting, invictus, bourne trilogy) into one which is far deeper and more challenging for an actor AND doing it so well really made him shine in this movie. prime example of the deeper acting is the very last scene when he's talking to peter before he kills him. very moving.

  • Creepiest line evar:

"How's the peeping, Tom? Hah, how's the peeping...?"

  • tommy tommy tommy tommy tommy

  • @McGradyBrendan

lol@mcgrady, the first time i saw that scene i spit red wine all over my iphone that was laying in the coffee table...the iphone survived

  • whats the film about?

  • tom ripley is a guy with 'no life'. his intelligence and charm lead him to italy where he attempts to convince shipping tycoon greenleaf's son dickie to come back home to the USA. tom loves the life in italy and confronts dickie about his poor behaviour. an argument occurs and tom kills dickie accidentally. tom takes on dickies identity and weaves in and out of trouble with the police and dickie's friends over his disappearance. in the end he kills his gay lover peter because he knew too much.

  • I agree with everything else, but the statement about sexuality being a choice. Even animals are homosexuals too, and it is not a choice. I did not choose to be a heterosexual. It just happened.

  • Dikie's character makes this film

  • omg those neon green swimming shorts LOL

  • Having been a graduate student at an Ivy league instituion, I had to put up with so many Freddie Miles-like obnoxious, over-priviledged, super-entitiled little brats! I KNOW Freddie MIles! And Phillip Seymour Hoffmon is spot on in portraying that particular type!

  • jude law eyes are beyond fascinating in this movie.

    now he's just bleargh.

  • Read the book you will udnerstand the movie even better folks ;)

  • great movie, but damon doesn't do what delon does, gives it an emotional, sofisticated experience

  • I love the Minghella version, too. But I just watched the Delon version (on Youtube!). and Alain Delon is soooo marvelous! Creepily sauve in a way that Matt Damon just can't come close to! Too bad we can't do a bit of time travel magic and put Mr. Delon into Minghella's fiim! What a dream team!

  • was Mr. Ripley gay ?

  • I think so because he held a certain fascination towards Dickie and in the end he and Peter were lovers but traveling under Dickies name he also had to act as if he was attracted to Meredith (becuase of when they first met). Maybe he didn't want his "Dickie" act to appear as if he were gay.

  • i think hes bi lool

  • as was the author of the novel, Patricia Highsmith.

  • Is the pope catholic????

  • is he>

  • NO!!!!!!!

  • NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! not...

  • Tom is a tragic character if anything, he's like that in the way of Daniel Day Lewis's Daniel Plainview. However, Ripley's flaw is that he wants so badly to be a part of a certain group that he's willing to do almost anything to keep a life that he was never given. It's sad really although horrible to those who see him in the outside world. Unfortunately this is the key point to the movie and is makes a man so inhuman at times very much the opposite.

  • A great movie. Law's best acting and movie.

Such an interesting movie .. never bores.

  • I watched it last night and i have to say it was superb

  • This movie is very good.

  • This movie is sooo soooooooo sooooooooooooo good.

  • I relate to mr Ripley a lot, although I would never harm a fly. The film's Ripley is a daybutterfly compared to Highsmith's all-knowing Killer...Yuck. Anyways, the movie's a touching story.

  • A truly amazing piece of filmmaking. Less an adpatation than a riff on Highsmith's themes (Her Ripley is far less innocent than Minghella's) tis' a beautiful recreation of "Il Boom" -- that period in Italian postwar history when the entire nation became chic. THE film about this phenomenon is of course "La Dolce Vita." And you know whet? Both Fellini's film and Minghella's have the same associate producer -- Alessandro Von Normann.

  • watching the trailer spoils the movie

  • soy fanatica absoluta de esta pelicula ....una delicia ...

    saludos desde argentina !!!!

  • Matt Damon is sooo ripped in this movie. You have to see his abs.

  • This is movie is very complicated, Tom is mislabeled a villian when in the film he acts in self defense and given the era, as a closeted confused impoverished gay man his behavior is hardly unexpected or simple...

  • *Spoilers*

True. But he does eventually become one when he takes over Dickie's life. If not then, then when he kills Freddie. If not then, then when he kills Peter.

Rather I find it's the birth of a villain, how we get tangled up in our lies and descend faster and faster.

Love this movie. Recommend it to everyone.

  • amazing movie, jude law is yummy :L

  • @woohooooo0

    oh, thanks! :)

  • i luv matt damon

  • Jude Law, Matt Damon, Gweneth Paltrow, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Cate Blanchett - what's not to like? One of the best movies of the 90's and a all time classic in my opinion.

    RIP Minghella.

  • @Meltdownn You're right - it's the best movie about a book.

  • @Meltdownn

Anthony Minghella was a master at multi-layered storytelling. His films all have great surface plots with complex thematic content underneath. They are almost poetic.

Plus, Minghella was a great actor's director.

  • This is simply a great movie.

  • Everyone should watch this movie. At first you might think oh look at all the big names they put in this movie to make it shine...but the acting...the acting just leaves me in aw. I can watch this movie over and over again. Matt's so subtle smiles or face movements just makes you feel so sorry for him...eventhough u know the truth about him. Fantastic movie. Many many thumbs up lol

  • Anyone know the song that is sung by a man with a deep voice, when Tom is picked up the chauffeur when Tom is leaving NY? While the song is played, a cruise ship cruises by with the skyline in the background. The song is not on the soundtrack...the song is in one of the first few scenes.

  • @Dav68Chs

It's the aria "Mache dich mein Herze rein." from the Matteus Passion by J.S. Bach

  • fake somebody than a real nobody. hmm..

cant believe i havent watched this! i have to, asap.

  • Simply excellent film - great acting, inspiring music, fab plot - what else to want?

  • i Love This Movie.

  • Jude is so fucking sexy!

That smile, and those eyes mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ;)!

  • What is this movie about?

  • fuck i meant *Minghella was awesome!

and i also meant minute 1:49 . I LOVE HIMMMMMMMMMMM

  • ooh shit what I said goes to kdjsoidjsia !

btw, FANTASTIC MOVIE. excellent performances by matt and JUDE(L) and of course kdjsoidjsia awesome!..

only watch 1.48 I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM. JUDEEEEEEE(L)

  • im reading the book at the moment but i dont really want to see the movie just yet

  • Are you referring to Delon in Plein Soleil. If so, I'd have to agree. Still, Damon has, in my opinion, progessed as an actor, though I'm not sure his improvements would make his portrayal of Tom Ripley any better.

Lastly, does anyone know the story behind the translation of Plein Soleil into "Purple Moon?" If my memory serves me, the former would more accurately be translated as "Full Sun."

  • I disagree.

I think Matt brought a weird quality to Ripley... A naivety or innocence. 'Cause, even though I knew he was a horrible person, and even though I knew he should be captured, a small part of me still wanted him to escape.

  • I respect your opinion but thats the nature of a pathologic narcissist and why they are able to manipulate people...great acting!

  • I saw Jude at 100 club in London tonight. He's really cool.

  • OMGGGGGGG FUCKKKKKK ARE YOU JOKING//??? you saw him!? i am NOW going to live in London. i can't find words to describe him.. THE MOST GORGEOUS MAN IN THE WORLD. JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDIEEEEEEEEE(L)

  • Cool movie I saw it some years ago one of my fav maybe xD

  • Jude and Law and Matt Damon are both GORGEOUS!!!!!

This film was great.. i couldnt get it out of my mind after... it was brilliant

  • This is my favorite movie but I have to say, whoever put together this trailer should get fired. Worst trailer ever...

  • @whaler3232

    why?!

  • I love this film!!! :)

  • "Your shivering Marge. Can I hold you?"

  • Elibest...Could you ever conceive, of going to Italy ? ... I'd pay you, 1000 dollars

  • I just love this movie!! I remember it had some bad critics at the beginning ... but now I think those who said that, have changed their minds.... The cast is just so brilliant! Excellent movie... I never get tired of Tom Ripley! ;)

  • very different from the book. complete reverse of the book in some places

  • It's a clever movie. Better than its sequel, "Ripley's Game"

  • I saw it for the first time last night and I thought it was phenomenal!

  • CLASSIC.

  • I must look . 5 stars .

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome movie! I love boating.

  • great movie,

    and a good trailer.

    AAA

  • or go to worththepopcorn(dot)com lol

  • This movie is beautiful it is one of my favorite films.

Sinead O' Connor sings part of the sound track.

Some of this movie has to do with Cain and Able the son's of Adam and Eve.

In the poem Cain kills able.

    I Jewish so it's cool.

  • i read the book, but marge isnt like thatin the book, i mean she doesnt know anything and isnt suspicious about anything....... :s

  • I didn't really like that either, but I got over it because I fell in love with Paltrow's quiet-to-hysterical 'I know it was you! I know it was you!' scene.

  • I agree. but u know, its always a bit disappointing when u've read the book first. but ill say that this movie is fantastic!!

  • more interesting than di caprio on catch me if you can, kate blanch is so beautiful

  • I so want to see this film; can't someone upload it?

& yeah, 1999 was the best year for films.

  • Buy it, or rent it!

  • Or download it with a peer to peer program c'mon you don't have to watch it on youtube!

  • the book was better than the movie hands down but still loved it

  • Jude Lw is BALD!
