@ friederich66, the song title is correctly called 'The Curragh of Kildare'. Unless ofcourse you are actually looking for a Chinese song about 'The Colour of Kildare' ;-)
hi friend, how about writing the artists´ me in the title? i only found it over the thumbnails on the right side of the screen. but anyone who tries to find the song by the name (remember: youtube is partly a search engine!!!)
is it so much work to write "the johnstons - the colour of kildare"? no one who entered "johnstons" will find their song here.....
don´t write an angry reply, better write the title correctly for other fans
Beautiful song. I remember this version from the 1970's when I was but a wee lad in County Armagh. It still brings me out in the 'Goose-bumps'. Thank you very much for sharing this with us all.
In the mid-eighties I worked in an office in London - the nicest person there was the Irish cleaning lady - we used to chat after hours. She once taped some Irish folk songs for me - including Curragh of Kildare - I was captivated by this wonderful song with its fresh harmonies. I never knew what group it was and hadn't heard the songs in many years till I found your upload. What a treasure, thank you so much! Music gets no purer than this....
that was in the sixties, and it was the very first song i heard from the johnstons. second was the travelling people. that was when me and them were young. does anybody know what happened to them? are they still alive? where do they live? are there later songs? please send it to my account friederich66. thank you
the johnstons were from slane co meath they started out michael adrienne lucy johnston michael maloney and paul brady joined after michael johnston left the group adrienne died tragically in the 80s they were terrific singers on the folk seen
the best version of this song is adrain dunbar and brian kennedy,i watched it on either ITV or BBC,it was fantastic and cannot find it anywere on you tube.
i cant remember d year but i was with my da watchin kildare play galway in d curragh race course and my da tought me dis song wen we were chantin it 4 kildare shame we lost doe UP D lillies :D
Brings a tear to the eye,98 in Croker,a sea of white,b ut i fly to Ireland tomorrow and will sit in Croker once again this Sunday wearing the White shirt of Kildare!!UP THE LILLYS!!
All-Ireland final 1998, Croke Park Dublin. Standing on Hill 16, at half time 30,000 Kildare fans singing the Curragh of Kildare, truly magic, pity we lost the match.
Thank you so much Catalpa - what a blast from the past, I remember my dad singing this when I was a little boy - the lyrics have stayed with me 40 years on. THis has made my day.
ah memories of sittin in miss comers 3rd class in the convent in naas, being taught to sing the curragh of kildare in our classroom upstairs in the old school. we had to learn to play it on tin whistle aswell.
was at my friends 21st a while back-at half 5 in the mornin, about 7 of us were sittin in the kitchen, drunk, singin old songs with her da and v. drunk older brother and his friend.the brother sang this-everyone joined in and my god i'd say we woke the whole street!brilliant
Wow! The Johnstons, I have some of their stuff on vinyl that I got in a second hand shop years ago in Cork. They had incredible harmonies. Great to hear them again. Go raibh maith agat.
the words are by Rabbie Burns the poet about a Glasgie girl who is contemplating dressing as a guy to get into the Curragh to see her beau. The song was arranged by Christy Moore and Donal Lunny (R.I.P.) CIRCA 1962
I stand corrected - thank you catalpa. the RIP was just in case I miss the event...I'm sure Donal Lunny will get a laugh out of it if he was to read that
I was a big fan of The Adventures, they recorded it as a B-side to one of their singles but I have never heard such a beautiful, haunting version. Awesome.
Many thanks Catalpa. As I recall, at that time the Johnstons were Adrienne Johnston and her sister, Paul Brady, and the other man in the photo. Anyone know the name?
does anyone know where to find a copy of "atlantis....the curagh of kildare 2003"? its an amazing version that was released by a newbridge band called atlantis for the football championship 2003...please help
without having my vinyl in this country the closest i can come is brian(?) kennedy.. and some fella called murphy.. got these results on google, but i haven't been able to listen to them
there is a male vocal version of this, the version i grew up with... i will try to find it if anyone's interested.. of course i'll try if you're not too - well you know what i mean!
@31470216 hi, just load the N°23 recorder and record it from youtube. that is legal, works like a cassette recorder and makes an mp3 file. start the recorder, start the file and stop after it is finished. you might write me if you did and it worked
where did you get this? i think the johnstons only released this as a single. its certainly not on either of their albums. the barley corn or give a damn.
God bless Kildare and the Curragh .Up the Lillies
