Everything that looks good in South Africa is an imitation of European culture. Architecture, city planning, parks, everything. If it had never been colonized it`s inhabitants would still be eating flies, mutilating young girls and cannibalizing albinos.

Last time I looked, Post Nelson Mandella South Africa was no. one in the world per capita in rape, murder, car jackings etc.. (violent crime).. or close to no. 1.

I don't really understand, I thought Mandella is celebrated as some kind of good man that made things better, but from all I've heard, it seems to have went down the tubes.

Just imagine, South Africa after long time under soviet regime. I believe it would be now in big trouble. This is not quite smart comparison. First they need to overcome heavy baggage of Soviet regime and then try to compare.

@lebammabel i just want to compare. for both countries 1990's was time of changes - Ukraine became a democracy and independent , South Africa transitioned from the system of apartheid to one of majority rule.

@SamuelJoaodaSuica depends on which countries u include as Asian 3rd world if u mean Burma/Laos u would be correct it wont happen in ur lifetime But if u mention 1 of the 4 Economic Tiger Cubs(Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam) Then u would be wrong. Ill Use the weakest as an EX. Come 2025 Vietnam will be the 17th largest economy in the world according to current trends. They are the successors of the 4 Asian Tigers(Korea, HK,Singapore,Taiwan) Vietnam and Moldova would be a good comparison

Yes, South Africa has more money than Ukraine, but inequality, poverty and unemployed are higher than in Ukraine. Ukraine has well-developed and multifunctional system of higher education and high human development. In addition, Ukraine has a large informal sector - 53% of official GDP. South Africa - only 28.4%. So, real GDP much higher than official data.

slums in Ukraine? in Ukraine there is no trailer parks and nasty slums... Even in poorest areas ukrainian largest cities you may see bench and trees, and people live with regular light, clean and steady water supply and these areas relatively safe.. just it's old soviet-era buildings, do not look like slums. Ukraine has suffered in the past century more than majority european countries and its economy isn't the best now.

ukraine has lower gdp than south africa, but absolute poverty in ukraine already was overcome..even slums in Ukraine looks better than slums in South Africa. By the way, both countries have renounced nuclear weapons in the early '90s. and football - in South Africa FIFA 2010 and Ukraine will be the EURO 2012

This is a very different countries. South Africa is country of contrasts: staggering poverty and chic resorts... pictures reflect only good side.

Ukraine has big intellectual potential and is not poor overall. Just need create conditions for investors, kill corruption, to change rulers and to make adequate taxation of its freeloader super rich.
