  • I'm stoned as fuck right now, and I'm looking at my Bob Dylan tattoo and not regretting it at all.

  • The whole 12x35=420 is just a funny coincidence. This song was written before 420 was part of marijuana culture. The story for the title is that the reason its called "Rainy Day Woman 12 & 35" is because they were jamming to it one day and it was untitled, and a mom and her daughter walked in to the studio to get out of a storm that was outside. Bob was talking to them and he tried to guess their ages and guessed correctly, they were 12 and 35.

  • @lmOnlySleeping it's not quite like that, for me there's no mistery in the chosen numbers, twelve rhymes women and thirty five rhymes rainy day.

  • @AaronBuzzer

You dont know its not like that, there is no definitive answer. All i know is my story is a very common story. Also how does 12 rhyme women and rainy day 35? I could understand him just putting in random numbers to make it flow better, but i dont see how those numbers rhyme anything.

  • @lmOnlySleeping each to their own.. i just came to this conclusion, it's up to you to believe the one you've read or been told about.

  • @AaronBuzzer

Im not saying I believe it, hence me saying "The story for the title is..." I was just sharing the popular story. I still dont understand how 12 rhymes with "women" and 35 rhymes with "rainy day" like you said though.

  • @lmOnlySleeping they really do.

  • Everybody must get stoned!! ;)

  • I'm stoned

  • I read up on Wikipedia, he was high on Cannabis after passing joints around before...

  • I was born in 66 and I'm stoned man.

  • rainy day women #12 & 35

    women rhymes twelve

rainy day rhymes thirty five... it's all about poetry really...lol

  • Skinny-D AKA BOB DYLAN rolls FAT BLUNTS! EVERYONE MUST GET STONED!

  • The lyrics are not what you think they mean, children.

  • @dogdaddy47 ok maybe they dont literally mean getting stoned, but isnt it kind of obvious that hes deliberately trying to make it sound like he means getting stoned?

  • My grandfather used to get fucked up with Bob Dylan. Makes me love both even more.

  • Like most Dylan lyrics, you find your own interpretation. And its no use asking the man himself because he never answers - nobody knows if he is being enigmatic or he just can't remember.

  • i am in the best part of youtube again...

  • Thanks for posting this Bob Dylan classic. The sheet music for the piano part on "Rainy Day Women" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of this great piano part!

  • why is the pitch increased? :S

  • "Rainy Day Woman" is slang for: a joint.

    XX

  • @RockyWhyNott nonsense

  • @popmalevoo I don't joke about these things.

  • I may be an old woman here, but it meant to me, that you can't please anyone anytime, anywhere, no matter how famous, rich, smart, popular, poetic , etc. you are. You just can't please anyone. Dylan loved metaphors and analogies. The record company didn't want to name this song or album "Stoned" so Dylan picked the title from a newspaper articles he saw laying on the table. Everybody must get stoned ... usually all through life.

  • 8 people are sunny day women.

  • The Beatles' first time was with Bob Dylan.

  • roll as many as we like.....this song is about being judged and stoned no matter what u do....everybody gets stones.....oh well, at least were not alone

  • people are so stupid this song is about persecution not drugs!

  • @doctorw2 haha, yeah, the persecution of being sober.

  • @tidalwavedave305 no idiot he is talking about being hit with stones as in like the ones you throw at people please listen to the lyrics and understand what this song is saying ok.

  • @doctorw2 I think it's about being around people who keep getting you high, even though, "you're trying to be so good". It's interesting that you think that, you can read it that way, (read it however the fuck you want) but I think it is basically about friends smoking you up at inappropriate times, and if everybody got stoned, you wouldn't be all alone because they'd be on your same wavelength.

Your reading into it too much. Save that for something like Desolation Row.

  • Tune...nuff said..

  • Good tune..nuff said..

  • I am on the odd a part of Youtube once more.

  • @ignaciofulle49 Weird Part of Youtube? If you're in the Bob Dylan videos, and tunes.. I'd say you're pretty far into the good section. great section. perfect section

  • Im stoned.

  • Revelation 6:12-17 after the 5th seal...happens to those in the 6th....who did it to those in the 5th. Happens to the prophets...so what comes around goes around.

  • Omg.. Stoned doesn't mean like cannabis-stoned. Stoned is like rock-stoned. Someone throw a rock at you. Ok?

    (Hate dumb people)

  • @duddu1111 Youre retarded if u were smart u would realize the analogy.

  • @duddu1111 don't hate yourself just because you're dumb. Right you are that he is kinda talking about stoning like in Life of Brian or the Bible of whatever... but then he's talking about society and all that, dig. And lastly Duddu--- he is the guy who turned The Beatles onto weed (as the kids called it, then), and so probably he was talking about Marijuana stoned. neither you or I are Dylan so we can't be certain. But dude, stoning is the analogy, the laughter ought to be a hint.....

  • @leesvideopage I was just trolling, chill. I know the subcontinent themes in the lyrics, stoned and stoning is intertwined to a double-monologue.

  • @duddu1111 Christ you're an idiot. A bit jolly a tune for such a heavy lyrics if that was the meaning don't you think?

  • perhaps you could give this song it's correct title?

    Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

  • @katattack420 this is a god damn song who gives a shit about the god damn name so go take a dump and get th fuck out of you smartass comments

  • @weezer01991 - Good FOLLOW-Up Song...is "How does it Feel!"

  • @onlyapawnintheirgame

Rolling stone is the only group that said Sgt Pepper is the best, there is no way of knowing the best album. everyones tastes are different, I hate that magazine.. they do those lists just to sell more magazines. my favorite Album is Dylans "time they are a changin album" and that didnt even make the list

  • @poeticreject Mine too but as far as greatness goes it can't get better than blonde on blonde

  • (this comment has been removed as the author is too stoned)

  • the 6 dislikes are are a bunch of ninnies... you guys clearly dont know how to get stoned.

  • best song to get lifted too!

  • I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was about 13 and my grandfather- one of the most conservative men you will EVER meet.. picture Red from that 70s show- played this song for for me. I just about shit my pants.

  • It would be a hit today or any day.

  • My favorite ever Bob song !!!!!!!!!!

    Listen to his laughs !!

  • I might be a pothead but even i know this song is about stoning Christians....

  • yeah - has he ever said from whence came the great title?

  • Great track from Bob Dylan I think we should all join him and get stoned ...lol

  • @hungryherbie sounds like a plan

  • @MrDollyrama and a good one at that ...with the world in a financial meltdown and no end in sight we might as well get stoned ..lol

  • I just smoked for the first time in about 6 weeks. After about 5 minutes, all I could think about was this song. So, I came here. Good stuff.

  • the day the group was recording this song, a woman aged 35 and her daughter aged 12, ducked into the studio to take shelter from a rain storm happening. hence the title.

  • @1skullduggery but if it's a 4am recording it's hard to think it went that way...

  • @AaronBuzzer what makes you think it's a 4am recording?

  • @1skullduggery can't remamber where i read it but it was a fine article and the one who wrote it had been close to bob..

  • @AaronBuzzer bob dylan: an intimate biography. by anthony scaduto; 1971, paperback.

  • @1skullduggery yeah, may be that one.

  • @AaronBuzzer zimmy's personal favorite. traces his roots back from hibbing. touches a lot on early influences; i.e. little richard, woody guthrie, his early performing days before his first record and the enormous charisma he had with audiences and contemporaries, and how by his second record had re-defined folk music; and his fourth and fifth were injected with rock n' roll. a really nice read if you should come across it.

  • @1skullduggery hey, you geting introspective.. if you get to know more about rainy day women 12 & 35, please tell me, i'm studying his work, thanks to remind me.

  • @AaronBuzzer dylan fun fact: in his early days in nyc before he was signed, he used to fall off of his chair while performing, as part of his act. another fun fact: in his very early days getting started in hibbing, he used to tell people his name was bobby vee; a ballad singer who also came out of mn., and went on to fill out the winterland tour after buddy holly's plane crashed during that tour.

  • @AaronBuzzer If you really are studying Dylan then Rainy day woman 12 & 35 is really nothing to do with Drugs. Its about the Bible.... cut a long story short mate look up in the Bible Passages 12 & 35 is The Persecution ( the stoning of Stephen) " let he without sin cast the first stone" therefore Everybody must get stoned

  • @sfinney100 sounds beliebable.. why was Stephen stoned for?

  • Adam Sandberg looks like Bob Dylan...

What a compliment/slap in the face at the same time.

  • @ColoringKaylee Yes, but which one are you complimenting and which one are you slapping?

  • Bob hit #2 in Billboard, 5-21-66. How'd he come by the bizarre title? God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great weekend!

  • SMOKE WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

  • OMG how long did it take to figure this out? Jerry Garcia did!!!! LMAO

  • How is that Get Born picture in color? I saw the video for that and it's definitely not in color.

  • where CAN i hear this amazing song live?

  • I want to get stoned with dylan. I know there is a poetic message in this song, but still, everyone cant help but think that it would be too much damn fun to be high with Dylan. just to watch him and see what he does. he'd be writing a genius composition that could create permanent world peace..while I try to turn a cat into a lamp...I really need to stop getting high to write comments...friggin cats man

  • @poeticreject I lol'd. Funny stuff man

  • @poeticreject dude tell me about, cats will get you so fucked up, its not even funny.... when them cats get u in a "cathole" then its a whole notha' ballgame

  • @poeticreject Have you noticed that most people who listen to Dylan and smoke are on the same wavelenghth and think similarly.

  • ok for 12 mutliplied by 35 = 420 ... but what do they mean those numbers?

  • @valerie16000

the real title of this song is Rainy Day Women 12 & 35

  • @Rush1013

Thank you for your answer. I know indeed the real title of this song. My question was ... what in the title do the numbers mean? Perhaps you know?

  • @valerie16000

Well I heard that two women came into the studio one day when it was raining and they were just trying to get out of the storm, and Dylan guessed that there ages were 12 and 35, and he was correct. Hence the title "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35". I'm not sure if Dylan has ever clarified this, but I heard that story on many different occasions.

  • @Rush1013

I believe that. I don't think Bob Dylan would confirm this ... most of his songs are full of misteries, but your explanation makes sense and is good enough for me. Thank you!

  • @valerie16000 and look for "420 (cannabis culture)" on wikipedia

  • 2 corinthians 11:25-26

25Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was STONED, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep.

    26I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren;

  • the song reminds me of a biblical scenario... Paul's life on the new testament. believer's those days were persecuted and stoned down...

but it says at each verse.. "i wouldnt feel so alone" because God is with us... even though we get stoned our faith never stumble..

  • 2:00 says the meaning.. everyone on the track were stoned including Dylan! haha. just kidding!

  • The song title is 'Rainy Day Women #12 and 35.' 12x35=420

  • Pfffffffffffffffft... 'ere!

  • Absolutely awesome what a great philosophy . Everybody must get stoned

  • wicked!

  • EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED.

  • Ultimate Double Entendre.

  • @Rossonero they actually recorded this song while high and intoxicated. So look at it either way. People often try to read to much into things - such as song lyrics - that they actually miss the real meaning.

  • Not a drug song, people. He's basically saying that no matter what you do, people will pass judgement. He's kind of baiting the judgmental who'll not take the time to delve deeper into the song. The narrow minded focus on the superficial & this song catches them in the act.

  • Florian Pitis - Toti suntem putin luati....anway Bob Dylan is better

  • 4 people must not be stoned

  • he was born in duluth mn and so was i(:

  • @lotec51 nicely explained. but you did forget to mention that its a play on words with stoned. cause its like people do that so fuck it everybody lets get stoned haha

  • @stigertbird hello, yeah i could have went alot deeper in to it but iam 60yrs old and i have explained this more times than i care to say.on the other hand i went to woodstock in 69 and i'm just now coming down, so give me a break. ha ha! luv ya friend

  • i dont believe this song is about getting high, i mean maybe a bit because getting high helps to heal tha bruises of getting stoned.

  • FB took down pot farm. :-( <zzzzzz#~~

  • grrreat song, in my opinion :)

  • @Vicious203 One of the session musicians who was there said this was only a myth.

  • lol

  • Stoned!!!!!!!

  • A great piece of confusing composition!!!

Was his Bobness talking about lapidation?

Was he talking about getting high?

Was it his intention to make us wonder that!!!?

    Simply confusing!!! Simply mind-blowing!!!

  • im drunk, i like this song, so like this comment, thanks?

  • You are exactly right ligger2! One peaked at #2 in May '66 (Rainy Day Women) the other in August '66 peaked at #3

  • thel stone you when you leave a research essay till the last day :/

  • he's so beautiful.

  • I love this tune man!!

  • They're Coming to Take Me Away vibe. Both songs early 1966.

  • @ligger2 Thank You!!! I thought I was the only one!

  • We all get stoned by eachother, ya know. (in good ways and bad ways, metaphorically, of course, literally would hurt no matter what >.>)

  • 420 came about because 6 high school students in CA could only smoke at 4:20....after school and before their parents got home. XD Dylan actually guessed the age of two girls who came into his studio on a rainy day, 12 and 35 XD = 420 Interesting how he got his titles lol. I actually think another meaning is about the trials and tribulations of a relationship...cause of what two people will "throw" at each other.

  • my chemistry teacher told me to look up this song and i'll find out the true meaning of 420 :)

  • 12 multiplied by 35 = 420

  • @maxjordan90 and what does it mean?

  • @iamductri dude how can you not know what 4:20 means?

  • @TheDarksideLord i dont know, really, just expain it to me, somebody did say it means something but i really didnt understand.

  • @iamductri it started back in the day when a bunch of kids in California would get together after school at 4:20 to get stoned.
