As a child from a broken home, this scene hit me so hard. This is real life folks...right here. They are both such amazing actors. How Ryan didn't get an oscar nom for this is beyond me...
"You made a promise to me...you said "for better or worse"...it was a promise...now this is my worst...but I'm gonna get better...you just gotta give me a chance to get better!"
Man that part still hits me hard...and still haunts me about pursuing any sort of relationship...
I completely disagree that Dean was "a total manipulative bashing ass." He loved her, and he didn't want to lose his family. I agree that their separation was inevitable because she wasn't in love with him any more, but I do not think that either one of them is to blame for this; their love was completely one-sided at this point and could last no longer.
It just bothers me when people call Cindy a "bitch" for leaving, or Dean an "ass" for not wanting to let go. The story is tragic exactly because no side can truly be faulted for the dissipation of their love.
"..baby you made a promis to me ok you said for better or worse you said that you said it's was a promise.. now this is my worse ok this s my worse BUT i gonna get better you just got to me a chance to get better..." and also he said "I love you so much"
Beautiful !! Cindy should give him a chance. They acting perfect !!
It's just my best scene ever. I wish one day my man would feel love like him. In that movie He is still in love with and wants to be with her even they both knows that their relationshpe goes bad.
@123msanchez I dont understand either dean did nothing wrong cindy is the one that left him in the hotel. Dean was tho one that decide to step up and be a father to the child and she just spits in his face basically.
@megatron111184 He constantly twisted her words around, became an alcoholic, angry, and started a drunken fight at her work which got her fired. It became a tense environment. The man that she fell in love with years ago in the beginning of the movie is gone now and she basically fell out of love with him.
@zora99 but i believe that situation at work wouldn't have happened if she didnt leave him there in the first place. even after the drunk fight when he throws away the wedding ring he automatically feel bad and searches for the ring if that is not love i quite honestly dont know what love is
@megatron111184 Yea but she had to leave the motel because she was called into work and didn't want to wake him. He loved her.. but by the time he wanted to try and work things out it was already too late, she was emotionally drained and out of love. It was truly a tragic situation. All you can do is learn from their situation and hope you enter a long, stable marriage based on not just love but effective communication as well.
Amazing film! In an interview, Gosling said that every single scene was filmed in one take. He said that he prepared for the role for 4 years and she prepared for 6 years, so by the time it came around to filming the movie, they knew the characters so well, and how they wanted to portray them that it felt like really not acting at all.
i saw this movie only once because it was so realistic every scene made me feel as if im watching a real life couple just crumble down.. it was some what awkward, but in a good way.. Which in my opinion made this an incredibly real film!
This movie made me happy that my girlfriend dumped me and threw me away on the weekend when I was going to propose to her...makes me happy I'm alone. The pain of being self-reliant for the rest of my life and sticking to fighting in war is by far easier than going through the pain you can feel from Ryan Gosling here...I am happy I'm all alone.
@hereisthankappan Somber monologue?...no, it's the truth about me. It's a short paragraph about myself, not a monologue. I don't really want anyone else even though I do look, when I know I shouldn't. I should just fucking stop...but I don't know why I can't. Do you even slightly understand that?...or are you just trolling?
@coldstaind91 Yeah, I think I do. I am sorry I don't know why its like that. I have tried to answer that question too Maybe because we are social animals and are not meant to be alone. Happy and Sad Moments are better if you have somebody to support and drink from the same cup of sorrows with you. Even though you think you should stop looking, you can't because of these reasons. Friends and family can only go soo much and even fuck buddies become somewhat tedious making you always crave for more
@hereisthankappan That's a cup I drink alone now...I had someone...but that's gone now. And so is any chance of another try at anything or anyone...it just left me drained. But I understand & respect what ur saying. I understand & respect the concept of not everyone should be alone...but I've accepted that as a part of who I am now and who I will be, but mostly, who I choose to be. My friends are in very short supply, and all I've got is one family member...but fuck buddies? it's not who i am.
@coldstaind91 if there are no friends with benefits how does one meets his or her needs. An outlet to vent out the building sexual tension...? I used to think the same- that people need to be respectful of each other and having fun only when in a relationship. but life experiences has taught me different. You will be surprised how many people are out there involved in this particular arrangement and half of the times it does not lead into any complications, if both parties have a clear mindset
@hereisthankappan Well, that's other people...I'm not those kinds of people. But I, again, understand what you mean and I respect your opinion...but sex isn't a game to me. The sex I'd have is with someone I'd care about...my dick isn't a "loose cannon" haha
On a serious note, I really enjoyed the film. It was very realistic and made me want to work harder in my marriage. Both actors did a superb job! Go Michelle and Ryan!
A good movie to me is one that is realistic. This scene is so close to real life, to the perils of real relationships. Brilliant movie and brilliant actors.
I watched this movie the other night with the person i've been in love with for 9 months. I felt like we were watching ourselves. He raised my daughter like his own as well. We broke up last night, almost the same exact way as this scene. This is the most realistic movie based on a relationship growing and dying at the same time. Stellar.
why do they take good lookin guys and make the look like THAT...yuck what a shame. He looks like a yuckky weirdo in this movie. he s a great lookin guy but that s nasty
I keep watching this scene over and over and listening to "Grizzly Bear - Shift" and it makes me so damn sad, I could cry all the time. But at the same time, I can't help but to be absoluty overwhelmed, I mean in a positive way: This is such a great scene, a great song. I'm speechless. I just keep watching.
Is there a better actor working in movies today than Ryan Gosling?? "Drive" "Ides of March" and this scene from "Blue Valentine"...no one else appraoches him!
I don't know if she comes to accept it or not but we see she was willing to still want his company when she knocked on his door at the end of the movie.
Why wasn't Gosling nominated????? I love Jeff Bridges but he didn't deserve a nomination for True Grit. They should have dropped Jesse Eisenberg too, and given that spot to Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception.
The use of Grizzly Bear's "Shift" (alternate version) is a touch of genius. It makes this incredible scene even more beautiful and resonating. Bravo! Such a terrific film.
ANd why wasn't Gosling Nominated? Yeah, Williams was great but Gosling was obviously better. He was the main reason why this movie was as heartbreaking was it was. AND Gosling has two other Oscar worthy movies this year. If he doesnt get nominated... everybody in the academy deserves to be kicked out.
After watching this movie I could barely think about reality . I had no idea how to delete it from my mind. I was trying to figure out what would happen next. So moving, full of emotions not just empty words - this is what I like, this is a real movie.
@maagdalenaa1 I felt the same way, I watched it 2 nights ago and here I am watching videos of it on youtube, it just sticks with you. Favorite movie I've ever watched.
And I was just weaning myself off the anti-depressants after seeing this film! This scene through the ending flashing images of their wedding day is so gut-wrenching sad! Gosling is an amazing actor!!!!
She doesn't love him anymore since she witnessed him stomping a motherfucker's skull in while they were both in an elevator together and he reavealed his true nature to her and she refuses to accept him for what he is: The Driver!
i don't know why everyone is stressing out saying the academy completely overlooked this movie, It doesn't matter how well done a movie is, the Academy are simplistic fucks that only follow political propaganda. when it comes to filmmaking this movie is easily the best picture of the year.
@hereisthankappan Couldn't agree with you more, Daniel day is my favourite actor plus the best actor alive right now IMO, his performance in TWBB is one of the best of the decade if not the best.
@hereisthankappan Personally i like De niro more, Al pacino is great but he doesn't have the body of work that De niro has, De niro has been consistent throughout his whole carreer up until his recent movies.
@MrProphet24 what a war movie like hurtlocker wins a Academy Award, you really think about how shit the awards are, this movie is way more epic on so many levels.
The scene prior to this - in the doctors office - was very romantic. IMHO there's something very sexy when a man fights to keep the love of his woman; Now I'm not saying having a jealous rage every day is sexy - but in this type of scenario it was very romantic to see Dean get so jealous.
Maybe I'm the only woman in the world who thinks it. Anyone else?
@MoogPunch64 I agree, Bridges won last year so there wasn't a real reason for him to be nominated again this year. Gosling should've gotten that spot hands down!!!
From the first thought of theproducers, from the first drafts of the script everybody was counting on their performances. The entire movie IS their performances. The needed to be real and imperfect, because humanity is imperfect. The handled the human imperfection brilliantly and their chemistry, their stunning acting skills made the movie this good. If they hadn't chosen such talented actors, the movie wouldn't have been up to expectations AT ALL ;)
I agree with all of you wonderful people. This scene was just so raw and honest. Might be the best performance I've ever seen in a movie between two actors. Ryan and Michelle did phenomenally and definitely should've been nominated, AND won something too. Not enough credit has been given in my opinion. This scene, and the cross-cutting between the day they were married and their emotional fight left me sobbing helplessly throughout the whole thing, and I rarely ever shed a tear in movies.
@MoogPunch64 Agreed on Jeff Bridges...what a wasted spot, all because they like their men to be older and already had Franco and Eisenberg. ugh. can't stand it. I'm glad the globes knew what they were doing and shut out true grit, and recognized BOTH ryan and michelle (and jacki weaver in place of hailee steinfeld!).
Yes, he isn't successful in a financial/work aspect, but he seems to give his all into a child he knows isn't his and into his wife he decided to be with - He wanted to save her from a bad situation.
He is her knight in shining armor...just this particular knight has paint stained hands and a beer at 8am. Yes, its not picture perfect...but who is? No one.
Its not the life she pictured - but this man is giving all he can, in the way he thinks he should.
@mrsprincesslily So what? She should stay with him? Hey, he may be a godawful husband, but t least he's TRYING. He may twist her words to make her look like a terrible person and get drunk all the time, but he's nice to a kid who's not his, which means that Cindy is just an evil bitch, right? Seriously people, get real.
The way the flashback and present were shown so quickly after one another in the last 10 minutes, like those snippets... and then with Shift in the background. This scene was just so real...
@bassplayer1617 I know! It's the saddest to me because it hit so freaking close to home, but I feel like it saved my crazy, intense but very loving and long standing relationship. So thanks to this movie. Even though it's still so sad to me, and this song holy crap...
I just saw this movie and I was blown away-not by over the top performances or special effects-just the "realness" of it. Michelle Williams really did great, so believable by her and Ryan. I highly recommend this movie.
@jjelrod1111 The song during this scene is called "Shift (Alternate Version)", but the song at the very end when the credits start is called "Alligator" but it's the choir version. Both are by Grizzly Bear.
The realism in this film is scary. These two didn't know that marriage is not a contract, it is a covenant, broken only by death. It's a tragedy that is far too familiar. It saddens me to think that there are so many people like these two, people who don't understand that when it comes to love and to marriage, you only get out of it what you put in; the beauty of true intimacy is the reward of true commitment.
Pretty good scene. The part right after this scene when the kid starts crying is what really got me.
I had a kid with this girl that I loved. Not sure if it's actually mine, like in this film. Though I had my mistakes, I tried to give her everything and really cared for both of them so much but it seemed to mean nothing to her. It's all pretty much just like this film... the situation sucks. heh.
Aaa da movie was kool but ms thang in dis movie js lost her contRol and pants too much marriage is about puttin it in an stickin it out never give up or walk out of a marriage because confusion or lust for better or worst those da words but i hav my likes an dislikes in dis movie but if iv acually know da charater she plays in dis movie iv whouldnt like her in real Life
It's so weird...It's like they are meant and not meant for each other at the same time. Sometimes, love just sneaks off, even if you think it never will.
Marriage is like a mountain. In the beginning, you climb to the climax. After that, it's a steady decline. The steepness of the downward slope depends on the strength of the couple. Neither of them were weak. They were just strong for too long.
@Mike8901000 this is most definitely an understatement of marriage. Marriage is so very difficult but it is strengthening and with God as THE foundation, anything and everything is possible. I love this film because it shows how much we need Him; He is so wonderful and has made our marriage a wonderful, heart wrenching, loving, hard, emotion filled, selfless and selfish experience.
We all have our opinions. this just seemed a lot more demanding to me, I've never seen Ryan be remotely like this, he's just so versatile. I am pretty much obsessed with Ryan though so I'm a bit biased. Jesse was good, I just thought Ryan was better. BUT the world's in a good place. They've both gotten recognition, as young actors. Ryan in half nelson, and BAM. Both good boys. Haha.
I have recently lost my first love, two months ago. We were together for three in a half years. Our break-up felt similar to this. This scene got to me on so many levels. This MOVIE got to me on so many levels. They make it seem so real. My hats off to them. I can't even describe how much I love this film, even though it breaks my heart.
@misfitdoll23 I could not agree more...I felt watching this as if i was eavesdropping on real people. The honesty in theis suffering is soo real and tragic,,,,
@misfitdoll23 this is how i broke up with my boyfriend too. we were always fighting. love hate love hate. but it had to end. eventually, one gives up. moves on. lets go. hey, thats life!
Jesse Eisenberg and Micheal Cera are the same person haha. Play the same intelligent, awkward character in EVERY movie.
Just because not literally ANYBODY could pull off that character doesn't mean it's deserving of an oscar nomination. But it's just my opinion, you're entitled to yours. I just thought Gosling's role was WAY more demanding and he moved me so much, while Eisenberg was good, yeah, but no substance. People are moved by different things though.
Yes Michelle Williams is fantastic in this film, but why oh why, someone please tell me why her performance is raved about so much more than Gosling's?! Why?!
So this is how the modern family resolves their issues, by crying and hugging. That's too wimpy man. I miss the good old days of pots and pans being hurled with no regard for safety as mom shrieks her lungs hoarse and launches feeble blows at the hairy overweight step-father loosening his belt for one more round.
Yes. I did have a fucked up childhood. Just in case you were wondering.
Great acting from both Williams and Gosling!! Thanks for uploading.

i don't know why everyone is stressing out saying the academy completely overlooked this movie, It doesn't matter how well done a movie is, the Academy are simplistic fucks that only follow political propaganda. when it comes to filmmaking this movie is easily the best picture of the year.

@MrProphet24 Or maybe there is just too many good movies out there and awards mean nothing. So just take the time to appreciate all of them, TRUTH.

@countchunkula i agree, you've agreed with everything i just said. the Academy means nothing and yes there are lots of great movies out there lol...
MrProphet24 4 months ago
@MrProphet24 yep, but every wrong clock is right twice a day...case in point.....Daniel Day Lewis for there will be blood .....
hereisthankappan 3 months ago
@hereisthankappan Couldn't agree with you more, Daniel day is my favourite actor plus the best actor alive right now IMO, his performance in TWBB is one of the best of the decade if not the best.
MrProphet24 3 months ago
@MrProphet24 Yep, Also is it Al Pacino or De Niro for you ?
hereisthankappan 3 months ago
@hereisthankappan Personally i like De niro more, Al pacino is great but he doesn't have the body of work that De niro has, De niro has been consistent throughout his whole carreer up until his recent movies.
MrProphet24 3 months ago

This scene, and the cross-cutting between the day they were married and their emotional fight left me sobbing helplessly throughout the whole thing, and I rarely ever shed a tear in movies.
amigoamargo 6 months ago
@MoogPunch64 Agreed on Jeff Bridges...what a wasted spot, all because they like their men to be older and already had Franco and Eisenberg. ugh. can't stand it. I'm glad the globes knew what they were doing and shut out true grit, and recognized BOTH ryan and michelle (and jacki weaver in place of hailee steinfeld!).
PhilipWunelle 6 months ago
She is giving up - not him..
No one.
Its not the life she pictured - but this man is giving all he can, in the way he thinks he should.
mrsprincesslily 6 months ago 5

HAAATED THE END OF THIS MOVIE, SO SAD! :(
But It was a great movie(as a whole) nonetheless...
applebug 9 months ago
Pretty good scene. The part right after this scene when the kid starts crying is what really got me.
I had a kid with this girl that I loved. Not sure if it's actually mine, like in this film. Though I had my mistakes, I tried to give her everything and really cared for both of them so much but it seemed to mean nothing to her. It's all pretty much just like this film... the situation sucks. heh.

It's so weird...It's like they are meant and not meant for each other at the same time. Sometimes, love just sneaks off, even if you think it never will.
ilovesummerxx 10 months ago
Marriage is like a mountain. In the beginning, you climb to the climax. After that, it's a steady decline. The steepness of the downward slope depends on the strength of the couple. Neither of them were weak. They were just strong for too long.
Mike8901000 11 months ago 3

Haha.

To me, this scene MADE the film.

@MoogPunch64
