i was born hearing. I became deaf at 10 years old. Right after I lost my hearing completely, my dad and mom had seen this movie on the big screen. Later my dad wanted me to watch it with him (of course, he fast-forward through the making out parts -- so I hadn't seen those until years later). After the movie was my first time to learn how to sign the alphabet. I asked him how he knew it. He said he had a friend during his elementary school days whose dad was deaf and in a wheelchair.
It's funny how she looks great in the movie, but then for the Academy Awards she looks like a middle-aged librarian in a princess halloween costume. She should have just worn the dress she has on a 6:07 in this video, it's a million times better
Loved it, thank you. Had seen the movie. Beautiful work, your video reminiscence. Always liked William Hurt's sensitive characters. Thanks again. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.
I am in a ASL class and we watched Sweet nothing in my ear and i thought Marlee was a awesome actress and so beautiful. I dont think Deafness is a disabilty i mean what if someone hurt there finger so they had to cut it off is that a disability NO its not. deafness is the same thing. I love signing and learning more about the deaf and hard of hearing community. it is so facinating
@reflectionsinwa Keep going-- when you get a conversation that you understand every nuance \ Keep going....I remember the first deaf person I spoke with and....well that was 1978....8th grade- I'm not 47- raising a daughter.... IT never gets old-I'm an interpreter..I STILL love it!
It's beautiful! I am a coda and my deaf mother is my inspiration. This movie brings me so much joy!! I hope there are more movies made which explore deaf life!ThANK U FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO
She is a wonderful actress who has never gotten the recognition that she richly deserves. While her deafness is a part of who she is it does not define who she is or the massive talent that she has been blessed with.
She was in a movie where her character was mentally challenged and the law of the time said that she could be forced to be sterilized so she wouldn't reproduce and bring 'retarded' children into the world. It was beyond brilliant!
She's a one hit wonder actress who's gotten more recognition than most deaf-mute actors could ever dream of, so please, stop trying to make her more than what she actually is.
oh sorry, at the end were credits so it doesn't matter. By the way I think Marlee is a great woman, she deserves to be a role model and it is astonishing what she does:)
I'll never forget when I first saw this movie when it showed in theaters. I was a senior in high school, and I couldn't keep my eyes off Marlee Matlin, in every scene she was in. "Who IS this actress?" I thought. She expressed so much sharp intelligence in her eyes and it was THAT which made her alluring; I wasn't used to seeing that quality in movie actresses and saw the film twice just because of her.
....and William Hurt was HOT!

@Rainy64 Oh I'm sorry, I forgot I had to be a film actor to have an opinion. Go fuck yourself.
