just got fitzcaraldo a couple days ago and watched the commentary version. And Werener brags about how the native indian chief offered to kill Klaus for Werner.And Werner said something like " Oh god no, I need him don't do that... but looking back on it now, I regret not taking him up on his offer." Werner cracks me up. And Kinski, although crazy, was great in this film.And AMAZING in Nosferatu, he was PERFECT for that role. Although I really didn't dig that movie. Don't know why.

i once read that the indians who worked as extras on the set offered werner herzog, that they could kill kinski and let his body vanish in the jungle, and while working on "Aguirre, the wrath of god", at one point Kinski said he would leave, so Herzog told him that he had a rifle in the camp and that Kinski wouldn´t get to the next bend of the river, before having several bullets in his head.

To zapfly: actually I"ve heard something different: Mick Jagger was the original main character in Fitzcarraldo but he left the crew. Then Herzog requested Kinski to play this role. After a while Kinski had enough of everything and wanted to be off, as well but Herzog pointed a gun at him so Kinski had to stay.
