  • @erkq Fuel exhaustion (ran out of gas). Fuel starvation (icing, ruptured line). Fuel contaimination (diesel, water, dirt). Those are the most common reasons. Also, plain old mechanical failure, metal fatigue leads to engine parts breaking. You usually cruise in your car about 2,500rpm on the highway and the max rated power is usually around 5,500 rpm. Thats 45% power. In an aircraft you usually cruise at 75-80% of maximum rated power. Its a lot more stressful on the engine.

  • I'm always VERY curious about why certified engines quit. They are as simple as can be by design. Why did it quit?
