SJ were much more than adapting foreign songs which they only did once or twice. In my opinion they were much more consistent than SD Burman, Naushad and C. Ramachandra (my other favorites) and the other music directors. Burman sometimes had filler songs that weren't as great as the really outstanding tracks in his soundtracks, Naushad did genius work with Baiju Bawra, Anmol Ghadi, Anokhi Aada, etc. but his later work isn't as good. C. Ramchandra is wonderful but he seems to have limited range.
@HumanFrailtz - one has to accept that it is difficult to keep on producing fantastic songs that appeals to everybody all of the time. Having said this I can recall many films where all of their songs were wonderful. Taj Mahal, Saranga, Andaz, Bees Saal Baad, Barsaat Ki Raat, Dil Hi To Hai, Ek Phool Char Kante and the one you mention Baiju Bawra to list a few as examples. Therefore ALL MDs & Poets should be given credit for giving us many hours of happy listening.
The composers are SHANKAR JAIKISHAN they gave music from 1949 to 1971 when Jaikishan met an untimely death. The had the most musical hits than any other composers in bollywood. 90% or more of their compositions were hits. Their consistency is even now unmatched! They were responsible for changing music in bollywood during this period. They were the best!
whenever i listen to this duo sj i get electrified. though they gave the maximum hits they cannot be claimed the greatest. it depends upon the listener. i still remember my friends arguing over whether it is sd burman or sj. but the arguments were inconclusive. let us leave them alone no comparisons.. each is great and his own fine points.
SJFan381 - your comments prove that you have not listened to compositions from SD Burman, Roshan, Naushad, Salil C, Hemant Kumar, C Ramchandra, V Desai and others otherwise you would not make a silly and arrogant comment like you have.
@studer3500 SD Burman, Naushad, Roshan, Salil, C. Ramchandra -- and others like Sajjad Hussein, Madan Mohan, etc. were great but Shankar Jaikishan are untouchable. Maybe SD and Naushad but not anyone else.
@HumanFrailtz there is no such thing as untouchable. Sure some have directors have been very innovative such as Roshan (with Sahir's poetry) who brought quawwalis to films, SD Burman & Hemantji who gave us Hindi compositions that they created originally in Bengali etc. Whereas SK were good (and not the only ones) at taking foreign music/songs and adapting to Hindi versions. They were all great artists and to single out one above the others is pure arrogance and shows a lack of impartiality.
i am 30 years old now, when i was turning beyound 10 yeras i begin to cherish the voice of kishore as if it were heaven for me, but afterwards rafi kishore, and mukesh occupied equal zenith in my heart. Whosoever compare one to another is at best a fool, but the fact remain that mukesh in particular and rafi in general left far too earliar, heaven would have fallen if they could sung with modren technology based music systems which in thier times were a dream now even a frog can make a singer
@genuionquest I agree with you. Both Rafi and Kishorda were the greatest singers alongwith Mukesh, Mannaday, Lata and Asha. I respect all of them equally and it is also true that one should not compare with another. They were the real heroes of our film industry. Rafi was highly trained classical singer while kishor was god gifted genious.
aparantly this sharda singer was a love interest of one of the two... I don't know if someone could clarify that, and thats why she sang some of their compositions on that basis.
FANTASTIC VID! Rafi is great - so are Mukesh, Manna Dey, Kishore . Whether one prefers one singer over another is purely subjective and can't be based on any fact that any singer is actually better than the rest. Kishore couldn't match Rafi singing Rafi's hits - but Rafi couldn't better Kishore with Kishore's hits likewise with Mukesh! Each singer had a unique style of his own.
if only we cud get CDs made of such events, as now a days we get to see every frog croaking and making a cd , why shud such immortals be let to fade away. hope some one takes the initiative.
