The fossil is of an early sloth like mammal not a reptile. It gives us a glimpse into early mammalian development and adds to our understanding of mammalian/sloth/primate evolution. It is fascinating that we see some human features that turn up in what become humans later too..

Ida is a 47 million years old skeleton of a mammal that shows the features of both the lemur clade and that of prosimian; it is representative of the animals which lead from lemur-like to the prosimians. Was its species *the* link? Perhaps, but the odds are against it. However, it has to be a close relative and it demonstrates the features that it certainly shared with whatever the link actually is.

I have further looked into it and you are right, there is a debate over whether or not it is really linked to anthropoids. I realized that actually typing in "Darwinius masillae" instead of Ida into google reveals a largely more abundant list of articles on the subject.

It will still be a valued exhibit 100 years from now.

The Piltdown Hoax got away for 40 years, because stupidity and national pride. I still own a 1920s popular science book, written in England. It stated with british pride, that "the Piltdown´s head was small, but well formed as correspond to a briton", Severe doubts on this fossil were expressed in the the 1920s because didnt fit with the most recent findings.

I do not need 'missing link' to convince me that evolution is true - I think is the best scientific theory considering that Darwin did not have the benefit of modern science and technology and it has stood the test of time. Every time I look around me I can't help but to marvel at the greatness of nature and its ability to self balance and knowing that I know how it happened.

The fossil is of an early sloth like mammal not a reptile. It gives us a glimpse into early mammalian development and adds to our understanding of mammalian/sloth/primate evolution. It is fascinating that we see some human features that turn up in what become humans later too..

Would you call this a hoax? No, I don't think so. A hoax is like the Piltdown Man or Archaeoraptor, intentionally put together to fool scientists and other scholars. This is a genuine fossil. It has certainly been overhyped, and various media have oversold the "missing link" reference. But darwinius is definitely a fossil, and important one, and not a hoax.

Ida is a 47 million years old skeleton of a mammal that shows the features of both the lemur clade and that of prosimian; it is representative of the animals which lead from lemur-like to the prosimians. Was its species *the* link? Perhaps, but the odds are against it. However, it has to be a close relative and it demonstrates the features that it certainly shared with whatever the link actually is.

It is most definitely not a hoax; the fossil has been examined by a large number of qualified people (not just Jørn) using all sorts of instruments, and the unanimous verdict is that it is an authentic primate fossil from about 47 mya. Whether it is a human ancestor is up in the air, but has not been definitively ruled out. It's certainly been hyped, but that's just people's ego. It will still be a valued exhibit 100 years from now.

Among creationist circles a HOAX is usually something like Piltdown Man or Archaeoraptor, which were definite fakes. Unfortunately, the sciences are replete with frauds, as are all other human endeavors. In this sense Ida is not a hoax. It was over-pimped, but that happens too. It is still a very important find for primatologists.

There is some doubt that it is (or rather, it's species is) on the direct ancestral line to man, but that is honestly the case for almost all fossils that are possibilities. It won't be an open or shut case until we have more fossils to fill in so we can see what it's contemporary competition is for the distinction, if you can call it that.

You can't claim it as a fact until it is 100% provable. This is a supposition, and a very likely one at that, but it is not evidence.
