  • Boston Ma and the Paradise love U 2 Somerville Ma Rocks.

  • Go Bono, Ireland not UK!

  • U2's run through Achtung Baby was phenomenal. Their post '92 must was not in the same league.

  • They're pretty young here.. I figure both are probably 21 (the age when many people are finishing up their senior year of college). Great performances btw. I noticed how comfortable and adult-like they come across. Tom Snyder, who's way older, doesn't faze them with his questions. I think many guys at this age would not respond with this much confidence and self-assuredness if peppered with questions like Tom's.

  • THIS IS AMAZING, AWESOME, THANKS FOR UPLOADING!!!:DDDDDDD<333333333333333333333333

  • just an introduction..haha wise words

  • This takes me back... back to a time when the Edge had hair.

  • LOL Bono asking everyone to stand up during the song....don't think he needs to worry about that anymore ;)

  • .......this is......U2....this is...........pure rock n roll,if only elvis were alive to see them, i can't really even begin to fathom what elvis would do with U2 and U2 with elvis, it would be incredible, elvis said his favorite was roy orbison, and well, speaks for itself..........i think roy did some kind of work with U2 also........if you look up in the dictionary 'rock n roll music' you'll see: U2. U2 is to rock what Brian Wilson is to California. You can't place U2 in a box like most bands

  • IT'S GOOD! IT'S GOOD!

    (chills)

  • Would like to see a video of Bono watching this video today and record all of his comments on video. That would be cool. 30 years later! I became a fan in Oct of 1982 so this is wild seeing something even before I was a fan!!

  • Great response to the question at the end, why call the album boy. Just like all the major acts before them, they worked their ass off, built up their audience and eventually reached the level they currently occupy. Unlike some acts, *cough* oasis *cough*, they didn't assume people would automatically see their greatness, but travelled the hard miles to build up their fanbase.

  • ils n 'ont pas tant change que ca... excellent!!!!

  • Bono's face bears a strange resemblance to my bicycle seat.... PS I;m a woman!

  • fabulous video, I really love your channel too

  • Incrível! Bono desde muito jovem gosta de interagir com o seu público. porisso o palco de seus shows avançam cada vez mais para o meio de sua platéia. E nós U2 fãs adoramos isto também! Afinal, somos loucos pelo U2! Verdadeiramente U2Lovers!!

  • Incredible! bono at a very young enjoy interacting with your audience. For that reason they stage their shows move increasingly into the middle of his audience. And we U2 fans love it too! After all, we're crazy by U2! U2Lovers truly!!

  • U2 ROCK

  • What a terrible host...

  • ADAM! is that adam?! OMFG!

  • History in the making!

  • Tom Synder was the best late night television person ever. His teddy bear is a legend cause Ace Frehley and Bono wanted. i would where the teddy bear is now.

  • early U2 was by far the best

  • seems that host could feel they were gonna be big

  • Thanks for uploading this. :)

  • That's amazing! Love Boy album! It is great to see that Edge's geniality was there from the very beginning!

  • Snider had some pretty hip guests back in the day.

  • Youth!!!!

    Check out Bono's quaffadoo!!!!

  • 4:46 soo young!

  • sooooo cute!

  • The band is often criticized for its political stands... even that it simply takes political positions. So was the moral and social consciousness that powered the music of the 60s a bad thing? Think about it! It could be argued that Bono has a larger than normal ego, but when used for good, that's not a bad thing. Much of pop music is motivated by and works for the dark side of humanity but this little band of brothers puts their energy into helping the good team win.

  • You tell em Irish man! Me folks are Croats tell'em same bs system they had prove a point...

  • Ian died and then this happend.

  • Adam's hair is killing me!!! LOL!!!!!!

  • Bono dances like one of those fairies from midsummer nights dream. little prancing homo. Look he's being real nice at first. 10 years later he's criticizing the USA. ugly troglodyte.

  • Haha Bono's so full of himself. But rockstars have to be in a way, and he's a good guy.

  • MYSTIC BLACK SEARCH IT!!

    My friend likes U2

  • Bono is soo cute when he was a young in the Album 'Boy' .

  • Haters gonna hate...

  • Fantastic thank god for youtube

  • Bono = God

    In his head. lol

  • Who would have thunk it..!! What great memories of a wonderful band in a wonderful era. It was amazing to be a fan of these guys back then and it remains even more surreal today. I travel the globe to see them play live, and always will..

    Bring on U2010!!!!

  • Snyder was easily one of the best interviewers in the business for years. This is a really great interview and shows how natural he was and how he sets everyone at ease with a little humour, graciousness and humility.

    RIP Tom Snyder.

  • Tom Snider-"A lot of bands come over from Great Britian." Bono &The Edge-"Ireland mate, ireland." i love how the edge says something under his breath. i bet he called Snider a cunt

  • I don't think he said anything under his breathe...........Edge is English born of Welsh parents and Adam Clayton is English....so cut the IRA anti British bullshit

  • Comment removed

  • he said "subtle difference" under his breath, but I agree with you, they are part English but always class themselves as an Irish band. :))))

  • "subtle difference"? man alive, you've either got good ears or a transcript. good show! :)

  • No, I just understand what he is saying, and I am not being smart. :))) Love u2 for 29 years now and have had radio interviews of them from this time and as a teenager, used to hang on every word and breath! Did you hear what he said now when you listen to it?? :)))

  • and.... Edge was always my fav :)))

  • he said "subtle difference" under his breath...

  • he was standing there, almost ignorant like now, they told him to jump a bit

he did this some time in the eighties

jumping was never his irish heart

  • bono looks so young and i think he is wearing a wig ! And what an old song they are playing !

  • jesus there so old but totally awesome

  • AWESOME! Thanks for the post ;-)

  • this is when my love affair with U2 began.........and it is stronger today as their music keeps growing. Lord, what a gift he bestowed on them! Thank you U2 for not pissin it in the wind! LOVE YOU and the -so far- 5 times I've seen you all in person!

  • kick ass performance.. youth..

  • And as for me being "too old to appreciate U2", yeah, I wish I was "down with the kids", man, so I could enjoy a mainstream band who have been around since the late 70s and who have a 49-year-old lead singer. Oh and the average age of a U2 fan is 30-31 - type "average age of u2 fan" into Google and see.

Now run along and watch your High School Musical DVD box set, Kid - you're out of your depth here.

  • "Muredered me on the last couple of comments"? LMFAO!!!!

You challenge me to provide web links to ant-U2 sites. I provide several. You refuse to look at them. You resort to comments about gay sado-masochism. And you think you won the argument. Haha, good luck with that career in politics.

  • I accept different ideas. There are people who love U2 and people who hate them. I just wonder if all of you never take a plane or drive a car of use no hot water...if so I think you're honest...but I maybe wrong...

  • @ FunkyMaze

Thanks - I have tried to explain that to them about ten times now. I don't like the same band they do and they need to get over it and stop sulking about it.

  • BTW I was talking to the people who say Bono is a liar...

  • @Twaturus8803

By the way, for those links and many many more, just type 'I HATE U2' into Google.

  • Comment removed

  • what kid of tree do you wanna be?

    The Joshua Tree

  • Is that code for pouring U2 CDs over it?

By the way, TortureUs, with charm like that I bet you're a big hit with the ladies.

    Tee hee

  • I'm with ya, Brand. U2 are as bland and corporate as it gets. And who the fuck could respect a guy who bangs on about protecting the planet whilst flying his had by chartered flight around the fucking World?

  • Bono doesn't bang on about protecting the planet. In fact, what he's trying to do is quite the opposite. It's a common mistake that the ignorant make, missteen, so don't feel bad.

  • 'If youre looking for an environmental role model, Irish rockstar Bono is a good place to start. Bono is well known for his humanitarianism, and has been called, "the face of fusion philanthropy" for his efforts to draw attention to issues such as global poverty, AIDS, and the environment. "I was taught that if my opinion was informed, then I had the right to express it and not be afraid who else was in the room," Bono said in a 2002 60 Minutes interview.'

    Source: kenforgreen[dot]com

  • Phew! At least he "doesn't bang on about the protecting the planet". That would make his frequent use of private chartered jets (for his hat as well as himself) seem really hypocritical. But he doesn't so thats ok.

  • He doesn't fly on commercial airlines because he might get raped by a 300+ lbs. woman, hey someone just like you!

  • If you want to find his real hypocrisy, it's in U2 relocating its music-publishing business from Ireland to the Netherlands in order to shelter its songwriting royalties from taxation. Ireland even has low taxes for artists, but that wasn't enough. Considering Bono has traveled around the globe demanding countries to put aside a % for his African causes, that one is indefensible even for me. I understand that it probably wasn't his idea, but he certainly has enough power in the band to stop it

  • 60 Minutes was right with poverty and AIDS. With the environment, not so much. Bono will certainly never say he is against saving the planet, but his efforts with poverty and AIDS often encourage industry and technology that harm the environment.

  • The quote from Bono doesn't mention the environment. That quote is from 60 Minutes and Bono would never argue it because like I said, he doesn't want to seen against saving the environment. You'll notice Bono rarely mentions global warming. The rare times he does are when he is with a group or someone like Al Gore that are very much obsessed with the environment and is forced into a corner on the topic.

  • Yeah, that must be it. It's all black and white. If someone doesn't like X, they must like Y. And they must be "idiots" (and Id better relay that to the scores of other non-U2 fans and there are millions). Of course, it's all clear to me now, Professor - thank God you're here to educate us all. What a simple, uncomplicated world you live in. Wish I lived there too.

  • Comment removed

  • My God - they were shit even back then.

  • Nope. Hate them both with a passion. Sorry I don't share your taste in cheesy rock. I'd been labouring under the naïve misapprehension that we were allowed to dislike bands without needing to ask your permission first. Thanks, however, for educating us all, especially on the point that anyone who doesn't like U2 must be a Lady Gaga fan. I feel enlightened now. As for "go away", well done on your anonymous web-based bravery but who died and put you in charge? In other words, make me, Fuck-Face.

  • what do like than cunt-face? Main steam Hip-hop? Do you like to get crunk or some shit like that? Or wait, maybe you're in a garage band or something, and is probably jealous that you're not famous but instead you have a push pencil job. Got a lot of class and maturity coming on to a U2 vid and blasting them. If you where born in 68 then I feel sorry for for your fucking old ass.

  • @Tarturus8803

Yeah, that must be it. He doesn't like the same music as you, so he must be a half-man-half-chimp Neanderthal freak. Still, at least you aren't arrogant and think it's everyone's duty to listen to the same music as you. Good thing really, considering there are literally hundreds of millions of other people who also don't like U2. Now stop whining like a baby and get writing letters of complaint to all of them and remember to include a clause exerting your authority over them.

  • why don't you show me even 1 million people who publicly don't like u2, scratch that 1 hundred thousand, no 1 thousand people who dislike u2, a website or something.

  • @Twaturus8803

  • Sorry, I don't click on gay bondage porn links. Thanks for the offer though.

  • @ Twaturus8803

Refusing to click on the links makes it a bit weird that you asked for them in the first place really, if you'll pardon the rocket science. And yeah, I can see how websites titled 'Hate-U2-And-Think-That-Bono-Is-A-Cunt' and 'We-Hate-U2' must be "gay bondage porn", as you bizarrely call it. Still, at least you aren't childish, homophobic, spoilt little brat who's too scared to click on the links he asked for because he knows he's lost the argument. Nooooo - no way!

  • Don't be pissed just because I murdered you on the last couple comments, keep trying though you'll eventually come up with a good one liner. Well, of course being from the south it may take you quite a bit longer. Also It's funny how you didn't comment on my theory why Bono doesn't fly commercial, maybe I'm right!

  • @Tarturus

Oh and if he was born in '68, then he was in his early teens when U2 made it big. You knew that, right? You must have done, as your witty and analytical comebacks such as "cunt-face" do confirm your intellectual superiority over the rest of us.

  • @MissTeenBirmingham

hey pet, yer forgot about tarturus's masterpiece "how about you take a shit on yourface bitch".

phwoooar! form an orderly queue girls!

  • @brandstifter68 No, you do not have to like brilliant song writing, cutting edge sonic engineering on guitar (and one of the most copied), powerful live performances, over 30 years of excellence including 22 grammys, modern bands that cite them as major influences, and more cover bands than you can stare at, an overall body of work that can only be said to be brilliant; You do not have to like them, but don't dare call it "cheese." They're some of the best at what they do, like it or not.

  • @MrUndercoverblues don't forget 'trendsetters', but, nicely said :) How many things did U2 and only U2 do way before anyone else was doing them????????? U2 is like ahead of their time, what i can't understand is they are the best ever band and you never hear anyone talking about them, especially at length, and in the movies they mention everyone but U2, these fucking people don't know real music for shit, fuck these people todaay, they suck, they disgust me

  • the shit? or shit?

  • How about take a shit in your face bitch?

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • This Tom Snider guy seems to be struggling with his used-car salesman personality and with wanting to be a genuine fellow. Bono and Edge know exactly how to handle him - with grace and humor.

  • hey give him a break he's got my last name! :D

  • Heck yeah! For many years to come!!! Thanks Larissa for posting this clip, it's crazy to see them so young! I wasn't even born :p (in the making at the time) Those 4 lads had no idea that 30 years later they'd be filling up stadiums like crazy all over the world! Can't wait for the 10/25 concert!!!!!!!!

  • Twilight great song, Live Much Better

  • Its 5 million by the way in Ireland

  • Thin Lizzy, U2, Boomtown Rats, Sinead O'Connor, The Pogues, The Cranberries, Damien Rice....not a bad list. Ireland has about 6 million population, Great Britain 58 million. That's quite a big difference, perhaps it's just demographics, perhaps musical style, but I wouldn't exactly scoff at the musical talent that comes out of Ireland.

  • Clannad, My Bloody Valentine, Gary Moore...

  • And not to forget the fantastic, yet underrated Tain Horslips

  • Said the illiterate midget who can't spell his own name ;)

  • We all know you dont have an "awesome job that pays well", you have a dead end shit job where you have to take orders from an AUSSIE day in, day out!! HAHAHA! Sucked in bitch! I think the Irish are also thanking god that you aren't Irish.

  • No you dont . You got overlooked for a promotion which was handed to a more deserving applicant which happened to be an aussie. Now you have developed mental problems that require medication. You truly are delusional!!! It wouldnt change a thing if you were born Irish except instead of being a canadian dickhead you'd be an Irish dickhead. Hows your Australian boss going? Cant be too bad if you still havent been sacked lol.

  • He's Tom Snyder, arguably one of the more entertaining and interesting interviewers of his time.

  • how funny is that? u never see a tv show cut off U2

  • Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow ... Really miss Tom Snyder ... he was always the best interviewer on TV. This is fantastic early footage.

  • They were so intelligent, respectful and passionate! Love the answer to why they titled the first album "Boy"... Bono had the biggest mullet I've even seen!

  • i was a baby at that time...

  • hhahah bono looks like frodo

  • friiiiiiiickin awesome! archive interview and performance.its too bad i didnt discover their music until joshua tree .everything was heavy metal on fm radio when i was in high school .

  • The balls of the 1980's.

  • no the balls of christianity

  • the drumer is a young boy ...el bateria era un niño en este video jajajaj

  • Public Image Limited.

  • kleeirwindeathcult : you can have him.

  • will you hit the tree as well??...Hold on??Where sonny these days??With you loser..You couldnt even clean the stalls in the restrooms after a u2 show..23 grammys and the biggest band..But Sonny really made a stand..Only next to a tree losers...Now take that and out a bandaid on your bo-bo...God bless you..Bono's friend..

  • "We'll be hearing a lot of U2 in the months and years to come." LOL. If only he knew...

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Bono is gorgeous!

  • yeeeeep.

  • What an absolute classic!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Always love the intro of Twilight...

  • c'est trop bizarre de voir The Edge avec des cheveux! lol

  • c'est vraiment bizarre de voir tous ces cheveux!

    bad hair times hahahah

à mon avis, Edge est plus beau maintenant

  • wow thats a long time ago!!! thx for posting it nonetheless

  • It cracks me up that they mention LUBBOCK TEXAS up there with DUBLIN IRELAND. I mean is he crazy??? lol

  • That was back in the day when singers actually sang live..

  • bono still sings live :)

  • So many men get better looking with age...Bono and, definitely THE EDGE, are a testament to that.....IMHO...lol!

  • I know a lady who saw them play a bar with an audience of about 40 people on this tour--she says you could tell they were going places. I saw them in 1983 on the War tour and knew immediately what she meant. Haven't missed a U2 tour since and look forward to the next one--INCREDIBLE BAND!!!

  • Great footage!

  • I see Bono had a thing for walking around the whole arena even before their arena shows... lol U2 is the best.

  • Our best work isnt behind us, Its in front of us

  • Bono needs a fucking haircut

  • HELL YEAH!

  • What goddamned year is this?!

  • read the title of the video again.

  • Great sound, but Bono's dancing is gay

  • those were the 80s, man.. :) everyone was gay.. and it was cool... :) just look at the band Twisted Sister :D hahah, they make bono look macho :)

  • I love youtube! these old interviews are priceless. Amazing they got here from there.

  • OMG, Larry wasnt even 2o yet!

  • I was 10yrs old in 1981 and fell in love with U2. Tom was such a great interviewer. Thanks for posting this!

  • Great interview we're seeing the birth of U2. Thank you Tom Snider rest in peace you were one of the best interviewers in the business.

  • U2 oldest song is not better than the old, elevation kick ass, boy do not

  • He was gorgeous then, also!.. yet still he was headed to the greatness such hair, huh? true Irish man!

  • We were all so young then. Oy. They are beautiful.

  • their first 3 albums were all masterpieces, last great album was POP.

I got so much to tell you about their early days, but I'll tell you just this- if you happened to put Edge whit this look in your basement than, you will shurely have no mices(from mouse-plural) down ther.

  • This makes me think of the 2004 performance of "I Will Follow" on a certain weekend late night show when Bono went into the crowd (and the cast) as well. The two performances show that U2 had "it" in the beginning and still do.

  • this is quality.

  • Thanks for posting. It is these gems that make stay up for hours on youtube. Interesting how you can see talent--but never really know just how deep it is--and almost all talented people need a little luck as well. This reminds me of the first time I saw Tiger Woods at the LA Open. Talent? Yes. But odds were he would just be above average. On both counts we have been awed.

  • u2 have so much stripped down honesty in their music ,i was 15 then and they sounded so fresh but you could feel the intesity building ,thats what got me hooked this band could take you on a journey a volcanic 1.so easey to see it now ,but then it was so subtle .we needed them they needed us then it rocked¬!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow! The Edge's tone is awesome!

  • Gibson Explorer, Memory Man Echo, and a Vox AC 30. Nothing else!

  • I know! He already had the perfect guitar tone back then, hasn't changed a bit! He still uses that amp onstage too.

  • this is the one that got me hooked!!!! great song!!! f@@kin rocks!!!

  • when they were young they looked so funny because they were young :))))

  • It never stops to amaze me how you can watch this old stuff and feel like you are watching a whole different band. With the Flock of Seagulls hair and dorky dance moves, this band could have gone the way of the Hooters or the Buggles. And yet, there's a definite hint of the spectacular things to come. Bono didn't have near the voice he has now, but the whole band just has an honesty and charisma that can't be mistaken.

  • What makes this great is that U2 wasn't tained by success. No expectations....just do your thing and rock out.

  • what is the song

  • wow, I LOVED this - what a great find! Thanks so much for posting

  • what a trip! I just stumbled upon this post. I remember watching this show, thinking wow this band is "RAD". Boy (no pun intended) was I correct. I have been a fan ever since. BTW ONE is the best song of ALL TIME!
