REPLY TO vamppirek : In a nutshell, i believe there are only 2 Tribal styles in the USA... ATS has that "normadic gypsy" flavor, it is danced with zils and mostly with hip twirls (eg. Tribal Fusion and ATS originated in the USA from its roots in raq sharqi (oriental dance) thats been evolved into something unique that "traditionalists" cannot appreciate.
i just love Rachel's brand of Tribal Fusion.. she is incomparable and no one else can even touch her technique... she is an icon!! i just cant watch her enough... this is a new territory in artistry!!
Rachel Brice is my hero. I love her and her dancing - she takes my breath away every time I see her dance. This was a beautiful performance, and I love the music too.
The only thing I don't like is the weird camera angles. With that downward angle, I can't see any of the subtle, beautiful things she's doing with her body. Dance videos should be about the dancer's skill and not the cameraman's. *sigh*
I mean, have you seen video called Styles of bellydance defined? It shows Tribal dance and than Rachel talks about Tribal fusion not being strictly tribal. But she doesnt mean ATS
What I mainly mean, is there any other Tribal Style except ATS and fusion? ( except gothic fusions etc)
For those of you calling ATS, this is actually not American Tribal Style. This is just plain old Tribal Fusion. ATS is strictly danced in a group and improvised, with zills.
I love traditional belly dancing, but this fusion is beautiful too. Dance is dance, however it is interpreted. You guys are very unique. Keep doing what ur doing X love it. Rachel you're just hypnotising to watch. Zee from England, birmingham x
First, tribal fusion and traditional are 2 diff. types of a wide range of bellydance styles. & do not assume Rachel knows nothing about the origins. She speaks some sanskrit and she studied dance ethnology for years. She also has knowledge of chiropractic/massage techniques and knows how the body works. & she has won awards for best interpretive dancer. Have you? Post yourself on youtube if you are so confident that you are better & state it in the title. See what results you get.

Deirindre, sanskrit and arabic are two different languages, get your cultures straight. Second, in an interview with Rachel, she said that the hardest move in belly dance was a hip lift - which is one of the easiest movements. She knows about as much about real arabic culture and dance as you do - about nothing.
All I was saying is before you criticize, see dancers for the talent they have. If you limit yourself to a narrow spectrum of dance, it can hinder your growth. Diff. forms of bellydance started in diff. cultures, not ONLY Arabic dance. Each dancer favors his/her style as you do yours. Enjoy dance for what it is, and learn something it. If you take dances as inspiration, you can become a more well rounded dancer. It's an ongoing learning process. Have a wonderful day and keep dancing.

Deirindre, I am open to all kinds of styles, and I appreciate people trying to be creative. Some tribal videos I've seen on YouTube that are awesome (better than this). I have serious issues with people marketing themselves as "superstars" who are not by far the best dancers around, and then, stealing Arabic music by throwing it on a CD with their names but not paying royalties to the artists (HELLO?!). People see this and think they are real belly dancers with skills, which they are not.
You actually have more serious issues than that. The name "superstars" is a just a name, not a title they claim (and if you say they do, you'd be lying). If you'd own any merchandise from the BDSS, then you'd see that they don't steal anything. Rights to use are paid for and the artists clearly mentioned and stated.
The fact that these dancers ARE skilled is visible to anyone who is a dancer themselves, like I am. It's true I've seen better too, but the BDSS never claimed to the best.
I think your just jealous! This woman who you claim is not a "REAL" belly dancer actually has a degree in Dance Ethnology. That means that she went to
San Francisco State College and studied all the different Dance Cultures not just Belly Dance. So if anyone knows any thing about this dance (HELLO?!) I think it would be Miss Rachel, thank you very much!
I suggest you take your own advice and get your cultures straight as well. The style in this video is called ATS. It stands for "American Tribal Style" NOT "Arabic Tribal Style".
You're from Japan? Not from the place ATS originated from? How dare you then, attack and accuse others of misusing what they don't understand? It is obvious that you, yourself, don't understand this style. Maybe this here is exactly how it's done, therefore perfect.
oh please. you run around saying that she knows nothing about arabic culture because she thinks hiplifts are the hardest move? your ridiculous. maybe to her the hiplift IS the hardest. and just because she says that doesnt mean she knows nothing of arabic culture. really... could you have said anything more ridiculous?
This is her JOB to entertain - she does it well. I did competitive skate for 8 years, and the people who came to watch were not all experts. When I performed my coach taught us to go out and do the biggest jump possible. Even though a russian split or an 8-10 foot single axel isn't any where as close to being as difficult as a triple lutz, it's still more entertaining to the people who haven't spent half on their life learning and perfecting their dreams. She's good at what she does, let it go.
Your opinions are pretty harsh; however, I'm not going to stoop to your level of putting her down. She's obviously doing something right to make it this far into her career. I could bring out the whole, "jealousy is unbecomming," but I don't believe that is the case.
Hi. :-) One cannot answer a question until and unless he 1) knows the answer, and 2) finds and views the video where it is asked. This isn't exactly a top 40 hit. I'd be willing to bet people weren't willfully ignoring you. Just sayin'.
Also JuniMajnoony your just making pointless arguments to against the crowd. all your saying is opinion and trying to present them as fact. you offer your opinion to bring her down...yet you offer nothing better. if your going to judge something at least have a comparison. and in the area of Rachel Brice there is no comparison, she was the first to do this and as such she will always be the best.

Yes, I do dance, I've been dancing for years. In fact, I grew up with the dance. I can do belly rolls upside down, backwards, forwards and standing on my head if you want, but that doesn't make me a good belly dancer. If you've ever watched a classic belly dancer such as souhair zaki, you will see that she can also do all of those things and more, but not only that, she knows what to do with the music. She doesn't just throw belly dance movements on top of anything and call it belly dance.

If I started doing ballet movements to English elevator music, you would feel the same way. This music is not for dancing, an Arab can tell you that. You don't know the music, that's your problem. If you are going to do a dance that is foreign to you, then you should learn the culture behind it, otherwise, you make silly mistakes like this.
Using the fact you might be Arabic does by no means make you an expert. Rachel Brice does know the music, she in fact does know how to play tabala I believe. Just because her movements aren't as flashy to show it as traditional might be, doesn't mean she doesn't. It seems to me you're too concerned with the fact it might be something different to look a little closer to see that.
As an "Arab" myself I will tell YOU and everyone here that music is music, and all music can be danced to and should be danced to. You have more problems in your assumptions than you realize.
And adding onto what Justemalika said: JuniMajnoony do you dance? have you ever tried to do a belly roll? It's taken me three months to be able to go both up and down. Rachel? She can do sideways too dammit.

Whats the difference between strict tribal and tribal fusion?
vamppirek 3 years ago
Tribal fusion is more snaky (like rachel) and most moves are coming from abs. dancers must be really strong.
Tribal (You mean ats?) has less moves beuace it's based on group improvisation.
Tribal fusion is danced solo generally.

what I like about the "darker side of bellydance" is exactly that rules are broken!
so there´s no need to think about if this is "music to dance to or not". I can also belly dance on my washing maching.. if I do it right, it´s art!
Rachel Brice is more than amazing!!!
if someone says "I can do bellyroles too", it isn´t something special..every belly dancer can so.
but Rachel Brice lives her dance, she feels it, she gives it power.
she IS special!
