  • I think that is the best lesson on that song I've ever seen, thanks! Seems some say it was in special tuning but yours certainly works great.

  • You sure helped me improve my version! Thanks!

  • Thanks I already had the basics but you got me tightened up and sounding much better on it...I thank you and I am sure the people who listen to me thank you !

  • Thanks for this lesson - it's what really enabled me to play this song after trying for years. What equipment did you use to record this? The sound and video is good, but I don't see any microphones, etc. Thanks.

  • Great Lesson! I play this a little bit different, but yours is much more precise. I really enjoyed your command of the song. Thanks.

  • I dig how you really respect Greg man, very cool! Are you from Boston..???

  • Thank you very much. Great method of teaching.

  • Kudo's on the lesson dude. It moved along quickly without over explanation of the obvious. I've always been missing a couple things on this tune that seem so apparent now...cheers!

  • THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ON THIS GREAT SONG ......ROCK ON BROTHER

  • good stuff thanks for the helping in touching up my playing this song.

  • Best version on here other than Greg!

  • Thanks for just getting to the point. Now go up and BAR that C#m!!

  • Thanks for just getting to the point.

  • Thanks!!!! I love this song!!!!

  • Thank you for a nice clean, clear lesson. Awesome. I owe you a Canadian beer.

    From Niagara Falls, Canada

  • You are bang on and very kind to share it. My hats off, and a big thank you my good sir.

  • Hello Mr,

thanks for this vid, now i can play 'Melissa' finally :) It's such a beautiful song, just with the strumming i still have slightly problems. You managed to motivate me to learn a song, though im playing guitar for 5 years now (im mid twenty) and just learned 3-4 songs (im more jamming and playing my own songs). You explained that really good. Do you plan on doing more "how to play..." vids? Speacially of Allman Brothers or Dickey Betts songs? Would be awesome!

    greetings from Germany

  • Thanks for the insight on how Greg played this. I've substituted Bm for D in other tunes, and it really fits the pattern of this song, I never liked playing that D. I didn't know about letting the high E ring on those minor chords in the Bm C#m progression, so that's very cool to know. I also play this song with that A on the 6th and 7th frets, but have been playing the C and B in the same pattern, up 3 and 2 frets from the A. I'm going to give it a go your way, I think that might be better.

  • Nice lesson and Beautiful D28

  • love the song and you gave an excellent lesson, thanks for your time..

  • awesome. perfectly done sir. one of the sweetest bitter/sweet songs there is. thank you. now i can share this with my loved ones.

  • Thanks, very well done. You seem to have a passion for teaching, you simplify things.

  • You need to grow a mustache

  • Dude, even though your accent (I'm guessing eastern Massachusetts) Isn't quite like Gregg Allman's, you strum that guitar pretty well. I've been wanting to learn how to play that song for some time, and I think you've just shown me. Cheers Bro!

  • I'm grateful. Could you ever show the basic chords too? I suppose I could find them elsewhere, but you do it well. many thanks from a stone cold beginner

  • Thanks so much! Great teacher!

  • last chord is B7 in the again the mornings come

  • Thanks for the refresher.

  • very nice video. thanks man,it seems so obvious to leave the root notes out of those chords once you said it. i just didnt get it myself, and could never get it to sound good becuase i was barring them. this is great.

  • Nicely interpreted.

  • Thanks from Oregon Great job!!!

  • Great tutorial. So many folks tend to get lost showing every possible permutation of a chord, instead of simply showing the chords in correct order and teaching the song. Also totally jealous of your guitar collection :).

  • Awesome. Thanks.

  • Awesome tutorial. Had the lesson in one window and the your full cover of the song in another. If only there were more like it. Clearly taught and beautifully played. Many thanks!

  • Hi can you please tell me the shape of the c#m (where to put my fingers) thanks.

  • Tanks so much !! I learn this song with your help !!!

  • amazing! thank you. I'm only half way through the video too. You are a great teacher. You know how to use the camera! You should teach the teachers. I also like your directness. I'll go to your site later. Again, muchas gracias!!

  • Very cool-you lay it out and make it easy to understand-I will get to work on this! Thanks!

  • I just subscribed to you. You are an excellent musician, & a very good teacher.

  • is that a 12 string guild behind you?

  • WOW! That is a fantastic lesson!!

  • Great lesson Steve. First lesson where I felt if I didn't learn this song you would come to my home and kick my ass. Like your other vids as well.

  • way to break it down,

  • Thanks man, i appreciate how true you stayed to the way Greg plays it

  • Thanks man, i appreciate how true you stayed to the way allman played it

  • Thank you

  • Would love to be able to play like you. Admire your skill and not to mention choice of music. Maybe in about 5 - 10 yrs I'll be able to play that well. I just want to be able to play for myself. Why I waited until I was 31 to start I don't know. Better late than never I suppose. Thanks for sharing Archambault. Rock on folks.

  • Excellent lesson. You're a great teacher. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Thanks man! After all these years, I finally sat down and learned this great tune.

  • Cool thanks!

  • Hey good lessen. nice aand easy, simple to understand.......way to go.

  • Thank you so much! My daddy took me to see them and it was amazing, so Im learning this for him ♥

  • GREAT LESSON. I get a little confused due to the talk about keeping the open strings. Too many notes being talked about, I lost track of thought. But, nonetheless I kept watching and I am learning this song pretty quick..CHEERS!

  • VERY NICE LESSON! Nice job emphasizing Allman’s use of those somewhat unique open chords up the neck. This is helpful to me and I'm sure a lot of other players since it sometimes seems to take longer to develop one's ear than to learn the standard rock chords. I guess the availability of tabs is kind of a crutch. BTW nice 12 string in the background. The martins nice too (of course). I hope you consider doing another lesson some time!

  • great tutorial way to stay true to allman.

  • Hey there. I am glad to see someone else researched this a little deeper than the average YouTuber. I agree with just about all your findings except for going up to the Un-Barred A. I watched many live videos of Greg until I found one where it looks like he goes back to the F# min11 or the E6 chord (just like the C# min back to the B min rather than up to the D). I am not saying I am right but ask you to try it and see what you think. Also, it looks/sounds like a Cmaj7/G Give it a try. Rock on

  • I finally learn it the right way. Thanks

  • no dislikes! good lesson man!

  • Great Instruction! Thanks

  • Nice instruction. You have inspired me to dust off my old Martin and get to it.

  • Dude of all the people that rock youtube ...you are one of the best. I have loved this since I first heard it in 1995. I remember the moment and where I was at. True. I'm a rockie on the guitar. In the past I've tried to play this song from tabs. It was just too complex for the rockie. So I gave up. But after playing along with your video I can now do it!! Thanx bro. Now I have to go practice. This is so cool. And so am I...lol

  • ottimo*****

  • Great!

  • what about the bridge

  • Gawd, yankees ought never try to sing a Southern man's songs, but I really appreciated the chords. I agree, your chords are much closer to the "Eat a Peach" recording than others on Youtube. Nice to know East Coasters respect The Allman Brothers' music. Sign me a Southern man.

  • your right there is no d cord in the chorus, i watched 2 videos of Greg playing the song and he plays the B minor like you said. great video

  • can you teach the solo for this song :Melissa. Thanks

  • great video, thank you. my first song over 3 chrords

  • Perfect instructional, makes it a lot easier for someone like me who hasn't been playing for long. You would make a great guitar teacher. Thanks from Canada.

  • thanks for the great lesson! the chords are definitely accurate to how the Allmans play it. its nice to finally find someone who can play it perfectly and is willing to share with the rest of us. thanks again!

  • Thanks. That was really helpful.

  • two thumbs up!!! a great help your lesson was!

    PEACE!

  • Thank you for your precision. Great lesson. I have been playing it wrong as you point out.

  • Finally! complete version, precise, easy to follow, no jumping around and most of all nobody trying to get you to sign up at their website. Bravo.

  • Thank you! Finally. After seeing this played about 20 times wrong on youtube, this guy finally does it right.

  • thank you for an awesome lesson it took only one time through and a refresher of the bridge in d# tuning with a capo it took a little but the audio was great so i could sync up after the second round.. very very cool....

  • I always knew that Gregg Allman didn't use bar chords in this song! But I didn't knew how to play... man, you solve an ancient enigma! Thank you very much! Hail from Brazil!
