People had work and also had a good chance of becoming a home owner! Didn't live there but knew many people who did. Part of the American dream! Nothing wrong with that!
Its great to have this video. My grandfather brought a house in the holly hill section for $8,000 in 1954. MY family still owns it and still got the same phone number since 1954. History
@pconley22 I know, right? It's truly fascinating to see how Levittown or any other town was created. The speed at which they do it is extraordinary. Very interesting stuff!
I grew up in Levittown. (Mill Creek Falls and Indian Creek) I came of age in the turbulent 60’s and 70’s. Levittown turbulent? Not until June,1979 when we had no gas and decided to party in the middle of 5 Points. The police riot lasted for two nights. That weekend I was proud to be a Levittowner and a stoner.
houses are so small you can hear a fart from anywhere inside. i would love to have one anyway .i live in a trailer and it is so small you can hear and smell a fart from anywhere
Levittown was a beautiful place to live back then and as far as i am concerned it still is today,a beautiful place with beautiful people. i grew up on Stonybrook Drive, the best part of town to live and i miss it so very, very much. and as far as i am concerned ,ajsholdings and anyone else who does not agree can KISS MY ASS!!!!
$70K in todays money for a new house. wasn't perfect but they were good for GI's. before levittown you either built your own house over years or died in the same house you were born. levittown was a great idea! the 50's wasn't perfect but it had at least a few good ideas, like car fins!
lol ,the woman seeemed more concerned with dog getting out than the fact that her child was lost and being brought home by a police man! oh well, i guess thats how it was back then , she would never think him to be in any real danger. thanks for the post it was very nice.
i just wanna say. GREAT video. I'm taking an urban history class and looked up "Levittown" as part of my last minute studying. This video is perfect. There are so many concepts that this relates to: i.e. Clarence Perry and the "neighbourhood unit"; inclusion of city services (Water, sewer) in planned suburbs; individual v. the big city and his/her place in it: the Magnolia Hill, n'hood unit principle and how this gives the individual a greater place in his/her community;
@dankish I grew up in Levittown and when people called me a “Levittown loser”, I wore it as a badge of honor because in reality Levittowners were the “good guys”. And that includes the three black families who finally were allowed to live on my street.
The big crime was all the old historical houses which were bulldozed to make room for the mass production houses. There was room for both, but not to Levitt. He actually thought a jubilee was better looking than an old stone farmhouse.
Everyone who grew up in Levittown should read David Kushner's book "Levittown: Two Families, One Tycoon, the the Fight for Civil Rights in America's Legendary Suburb" about the systematic and very deliberate racist policies that existed to exclude African Americans from purchasing homes in Levittown which was a clear violation of the American Constitution. I grew up on High Rd-Highland Park from 1960 to 1973 and I never new this shameful part of Levittown history.
blah blah blah...and you see how nice and clean Levittown remained for years. Take a look at Bloomsdale and Fleetwing etc... thats what Levittown would have turned into full scale and is turning into now. Keep "Celebrating Diversity". Stupid whites will never learn.
Again.... you can't even write in proper English! Before you go around offering your sociological theories, maybe you should go back to school and study a bit. Oh wait....... I guess that's a "liberal" thing to do, huh? Hahah.
Yeah people like you are the reason we moved out of that trashy hell hole called Philthydelphia. Too many low lives on welfare that are now infecting Lower Bucks County.
Way back in '71, my buddy Mark and I cleaned up those blocks on the bank of the canal that spelled out 'Levittown' you see at the beginning of the clip. It was part of a school project, a film, not unlike this, on the history of Levittown. I have the film, but not the audio. Here's the hoot: Live shot of Levittown Parkway, right down the striped white line, shot by me on the handlebars of Mark's bike. Cars going by on the left, then the right, ... whooohooo...
to the number1madhatter... if you watched the video on your computer then you already have a copy of it on your computer, just go into the temporary internet files folder and copy it right out of there to another folder. rename the .flv extension to .mpg. it should play fine whenever you want.
Soon enough Levittown will look like North philly. White flight has begun again this time not from the cities to the suburbs to escape the liberal welfare trash but now up into the Pocono area.
Sorry I don't care to use proper writing skills while casually commenting on time-wasting youtube videos. I'm amusing myself here while I take a break from managing my corporate affairs. Go smoke your blunt and occupy the nearest Bristol Township/Levittown trashy, crackhead strip, joint/bar.
You've just proved to everyone on here that you are no "corporate professional." If I had to make a guess I would say you're about 17 years old.
P.S. I moved out of Levittown about 8 years ago, but I'd be more than happy to come back for a visit to smoke a blunt and hit up a trashy strip club. Oh wait.... you've got a few years before you're old enough to do that. Haha. I'll let you get back to your corporate affairs.
Is that lost little boy THE Mark Levin? The radio talk show host?? Can't be...I guess, because he was born in 1957.

While the suburbs leave much to be desired, it's pretty impressive that we could mass produce entire communities like that.

To QuaaludeRorer714:
I'll tell you what...with you talking like that, you wouldn't survive one day here in Levittown...that is a FACT.
You need to grow up and maybe become mature one day.
I really hope you are no older than 15,because your words make you out to be a little boy that knows nothing about nothing.
Have some respect.
