It makes me laugh how many people are trying to discredit what Vinny, an ADCC heavyweight champion, is teaching. Yes you can go for the armbar, yes the flower sweep isn't really involved other than underhooking the leg, blah blah blah. He is showing 1 option of 50 from this position, that is how you teach BJJ. If you don't like this FREE instructional, then don't watch it. End of.
@Submissions101 When vinny goes for the triangle, the other guys leg is in perfect position to counter the triangle, so it doesn't really work. Any views on this?
If they are keeping that arm in tight, I remember you said to move your hips to get the arm out. If you cant get the arm out that way, can you throw the arm behind the leg instead of around?
Obviously, it's not him. But the guy he's working on looks a little like Filthy Tom Lawler. Maybe is the angle of the video, since I don't see it in the others. It's just weird.
Great stuff, though, as always. I'm a huge fan of Vinny's. He has an amazing game, very fun to watch.
Does anyone know why Vinny switches to the reversed triangle before clearing the arm to the other side? I saw others that just push the hips up in order to be able to clear that arm. I was just thinking that there must be a purpose because the guy has killer-BJJ.
@mwallin12 He does it to maintain control. Notice that he never lets go of the arm, but, in doing it the way he does, he doesn't allow the person to try to posture up, The Inverted triangle is for control to go into the choke.

@teesidethai the armbar is much more direct but if uke is pulling hard to stop it the reverse triangle to triangle is a good option. Having weapons to fight your opponents reactions is never bad, and it's not a super complicated setup.
It's fine to error is human. But of course back to Vinny. Well alright where in a restaurant. Who do you think would win in a fight Vinny or a Tiger? haha jk
Wow?? I actually came back to apologize but found my comments removed and I'm being scoffed at? Sigh.. I just want to say that what I posted wasn't meant or used to be derogatory or used to slander anyone. I thought what we had was a healthy discussion, a discussion to which I merely pointed out some inconsistencies in that persons reasoning. If I offended anyone I apologize, but I really don't appreciate whats been said.
@bananabread119 Your stuff is still on here...nothing has been deleted. And I don't mind being human from time to time and appealing to authority. Anyways, end of story...back to what matters...VInny!
I think I'd be more inclined to go for an armbar from this position, because of how the leg is pulled into position. It just seems to me that this would be a deeper and more painful armbar than most others.
@VinnyMagalhaes Vinnicious, You are my idol, one of my heros, I remember watching you in The Ultimate Fighter and now that I have the chance I have to ask, with all due respect my friend, In the final, how come did you lose to Ryan Vader like that?, he punched you and you kinda quit?, I think that fight had to end like that right?, that should be the right winner for TUF and Zuffa right?, I mean, you could beat Vader anyday anytime brother, by the way nice rib breaking kicks to Rashad's brother
@oscaromarjp I quit like randy quit against brock, like machida quit against shogun, like shaub quit against roy nelson... if you rewatch all these fights, we will see that all of uf got hit in the temple, it doesn't seem clear, but that type of punch is worse than a punch squared in your chin. i was out, I woke up when Herb was already on top of me.
It took too much for me to make there, I didn't spend 6 weeks in a house, fighting 3x in 6 weeks, to just quit as you think i did... shit happens..
@VinnyMagalhaes I'm sorry man, I didn't mean to disrespect you, I was really concerned about it, I am a Gracie Barra (Gracie Barra Zapata, Acapulco Mexico), but I have no experience in Vale Tudo fights, I'm sorry for my ignorance in that matter, that thing you tell me is something I didn't know, now I know and you are so right, I'm looking forward to your next fight, respect man...
@VinnyMagalhaes Vinny, we are learning a technique very similar to the flower sweep in fact its probably the same thing. They just started teaching the flower sweep to students at lower belt levels to introduce it early so they could get acustomed to doing it i however am almost black belt now and im acostumed to using and underhook with controll over my opponents head so im not used to the flower sweep and ide like to know for shure its best if only attempted from the gaurd right?
Hey guys, I agree with some of you guys that think that there's some other easier ways to set up a triangle, and yes, there are a LOT of different ways, this one is just a variation that has really worked out well for me against high level competition. If you watch my match against Glover Teixeira in the last ADCC I swept him from that position, and also, You can find couple videos of me on youtube where I use that move.
Here lets do a quick exercise to help clarify things alittle more.
Jeff: What the Math teacher said in class the other day could be wrong.
Billy: Yeah well he's got a Masters from Berkley!
Jeff: True this maybe suggestive towards his expertise, but that doesn't directly address if he's wrong or not, nor does it address the problem itself.
Billy: Yeah but again he's a teacher!
Jeff: Ugh! Again where not addressing the problem itself. You're just appealing to his authority.
@bamboocha923 you got it;-) My bad...My philosophy is : take what works for you and leave what does not. There are ALWAYS variations on moves for sure. Happy Rolling everyone!
@outdoorsman715 He Got Cut After He Lost Two Fights In A Row, But They Should Have Given Him Another Chance Considering The Competition He Was Facing. He Does Have Excellent Ju Jitsu, But He Needs To Work On His Stand Up.
I like the technique a lot but my only complaint is that pulling his arm up by his wrist is not that easy. It's easier if you snake in with your forearm and push up to get it over. I say this because I go for the triangle from meathook somewhat often and it honestly is easier than using the wrist. Do you have any input on this sub101?
@bananabread119 While this can be true at times it should also be noted that a word to the truly wise is that Vinny is a world champion BJJ player. Just saying;-)
@bananabread119 did my philosophy degree actually. My point is that your original statement alludes to that people who lift up the arm are not wise. The fact remains that it is the difference between an arm chair quarterback and an actual world BJJ champ.
ha Well lets hope for your sake It wasn't Theology. But yet again you shamefully appeal to Vinny's status as a world champion. This Sir is a logical fallacy and for good reason. Now if you told me something along the lines of no bbread that is not a good move because of XY&Z rather than appealing to an authoritative means, then I would be much more willing to acquiesce. But instead you appeal to Vinny to modify said proposition, which at best only makes it suggestive.
@adamish1134 There are always different ways to pull off a move. I am sure Vinny may in fact jam the arm sometimes. People should look at the moves in parts not as a totality or end all be all.
@Submissions101 The point of BJJ is to be strong where someone else is weak. Its much easier to push up with an extended arm than it is to fight that movement. Also grappling is always a battle and no one move works in every situation against everyone. There may be a time where stuffing the arm may be better. Of course there will be a time when its not as well. When a Blackbelt that submits other world champion Blackbelts gives you a different way to do something, its probably priceless.
@adamish1134 some guys are so strong stuffing the arm down gives them the base they need to posture up out of a triangle, or to put their hand on your leg and pass their head to the outside. Vinny's way adds control and removes risk.
@STEVEiaSTUD Steve, are you an MMA fighter? Vinny has LOADS of fighting spirit. Have you met the man? He is very inspiring and has an intensity that is pretty wicked when he gets into FIGHTING mode.
