it's too dangerous and impractical. Also its going to be like oil companies all over again. maybe in the way ahead future it can be implemented but not now.
if you want alternative energy electric cars are the way to go.
@mastermind1001 Electric cars aren't as viable as you think either. They aren't green by any means, Majority of our electricity come's from coal plants which produce heavy emissions right now and will continue to do so for some time. And another thing to think of is battery disposal which will also not work out well. Then there is the fact that most electric cars have VERY limited driving range. And are very expensive...Sometime the battries alone for these cars can cost 20 grand.
@MercuryMorrison1 electricity is used to refine oil. much like its going to be used for hydrogen. that's wasted energy in conversion. wasted energy that comes from coal plants... It's much more efficient to directly use electric. tesla has made biodegradable batteries so no problem there. they also are in the works for a 300 mile electric car. albeit the prices are expensive and miles aren't enough for some people but the tech is on it's infancy state. batteries will become better and cheaper.
@mastermind1001 yes, but as a measurement, a Hydrogen generater (electrolysis) using aprox. 500 watts to splitt water into H2 and oxygen per gallon.
I was floored when I seen refining 1 gallon of gasoline takes 6000 watts..
so either way, Hydrogen is a fuel we can make in our kitchen much cheaper then ANY other fuel... yes its ever cheaper the biodiesel AND will run a diesel engine the same as diesel, you only have to switch the glow plugs to spark plugs. :-)
@mastermind1001 To me personally, I think hydrogen seems to be a better route to go than Electricity. Also you say that having hydrogen as our main source of fuel will be just like it is with the Oil companys right now, well...It'll be the same with electricity. If we converted to 100% electricty tommorw the goverment would jack the price of it wayyyyyy up. It does not matter what fuel or method we use to create energy. Greed politicians will always find a way to tax it.
@MercuryMorrison1 oil companies aren't controlled by the government. we can do squat about the prices. Hydrogen would probably be sold in the free market like gas. If we do switch to electricity and our government raises taxes than our money would be going to ourselves i.e. roads etc (rather than elsewhere) Besides the price would be somewhat more in our control than it is now. Also there are alternatives, you can buy solar panels (which will become better and cheaper) to fully liberate you.

And your old batteries go to some landfill with thousands of other peoples car batteries. See the problem here? HYDROGEN FTW

Hydrogen gas is effectively non-existant on Earth; there's no place to just mine the stuff. To get hydrogen gas from water you will expend more energy than you can get back from the hydrogen. The usual method, electrolysis, is ~50-80% efficient and uses an electrolyser, a rather expensive piece of equipment with large surface area platinium-electrodes.
@soylentgreenb "you will expend more energy than you can get back from the hydrogen"
What if you use renewable energy to create hydrogen? Solar-powered-hydrogen plants would create the cleanest fuel possible using the cleanest energy you can get
I'd watch a show of Leno talking about cars. I'm not interested in cars, but Leno knows his stuff and he makes me interested. Screw his late night show though. He soiled that.
Hydrogen fuel is impractical, expensive, and hard to build an infrastructure for it. It will never happen. Electric vehicles will be the solution. The problem being that li-on batteries are very dirty to produce. Let's hope carbon nanotube batteries make leaps and bounds very quickly.
@chbrules oh you are totally wrong...it expensive because its not mass produced...Once it is its going to be cheap..carbon nanotube batteries are atleast 30 years away..electric cars are impractical..hydrogen is the way to go..
It will never catch on because electricity is abundant, cheap, and the infrastructure already exists. Why else do you think companies like BMW shelved the hydrogen ICE's?
Best thing about this technology, it can be adapted to existing vehicles, classic's even. That is as soon as the people who are trying to prevent this technology from becoming available to the general public. After all most wars and so called "police actions" have been over oil rights, and if the powers that be are willing to take measures in which millions have perished to protect their financial interests they cant be very happy about a fuel that could replace their cash cow. lol
@bicyclewreck GM had a hydorgen car in the works but when GM became Obama-motors it was scrapped. It was a 0 pollution car...so much for the environmental car of the future.
as nice as hydrogen sounds i have one main concern, the emmissions of course is water and thats all fine and good however what happens when you take one on the road in a cooler climate now maybe one or two would be ok however if there are many hydrogen cars on the road you get lots of water coming out of the pipes it will turn to ice on our roads that is a bad thing we have all this black ice causing all kinds of accidents
well, its not like it is pumping gallons of water a second out the tail pipe, its mostly vapor. And I think I would rather brave the possibility of some black ice instead of continuing to destroy all of creation... lol Besides Hydrogen is much easier to make than Gasoline. Therefore would end up costing very little as soon as things get going.
@leviticusthesexy LOL its a 7 series BMW....I don't know if you have driven one but you do not lose control that easy...also thats what you can come up with against this car? water leaking?
The BMW Hydrogen 7 gets about 5mpg on liquid hydrogen. And it is a V-12. I think it is possible to build an all hydrogen car getting 15 mpg running on a smaller engine using compressed hydrogen instead. That way many all crafts on Earth is clean.
Yes Jay is seen quite often stationary in the car talking while gesticulating like any self-respecting Italian would, but there are other times when he is driving and he's STILL gesticulating. And was he wearing a safety belt? I don't think so.
Leno screwed Johnny, Dave ,Rosie, and now Conan. It would be very easy for Leno , to say no to the Tonight Show, but he will always be a lying back stabber
Wait. I'm confused. We are trying to reduce carbon. But we also need to get hydrogen and hydrogen is commonly found attached to carbon. Hydrocarbons include petrol/gasoline, diesel and much more. So by doing this we are not only using up gas and diesel, but we are also chucking out carbon into the atmosphere because that's all thats left of the hydrocarbon. :S
You are confused, we talk about "Hydrocarbons" meaning these fuels are in liquid form or there is water in them. Hydrogen is a substance itself independent from carbon.
H2O hydrogen without carbon and CO2 carbon without hydrogen. Hydrogene is found without carbon. In other words, Hydrocarbon (notice Hydro is mentioned first) is carbon attached to hydrogen and not the other way.
@tinhlazi I thought that at first, too, but just had a look on Wikipedia, there are different ways of how you "produce" hydrogen. Apparently, there is the procedure you describe, but there are also procedures which do indeed create CO2.
I don't know enough about chemistry, would be interesting how the hydrogen is created for commercial use.
thank goodness for the hydrogen car. I can't wait until we move on without gasoline! it's finally happening. Maybe before we all die of old age and our kids take over the world we'll own one of these first.
@Gunnariffic That may be true, but people are far more concerned with the environment in the present day. It's more likely to take place now then it would in the 70's. It has to happen eventually, I just hope we're all around to see it.
@junglemage666 In the end it always comes down to the total energy footprint. You need energy to extract the hydrogen? Yes. You also need energy to drill for oil, to refine it and to transport it to where it's needed.
You can say the same thing about electricity powered cars: To craft their batteries, a lot of energy is needed.
Still, both enectricity and hydrogen powered cars probably have the lowest energy footprint.
@sqwishdabug Unfortunately, it's not happening. BMW has had these hydrogen cars ready for the market since the early nineties, but they never succeeded on the market because the infrstructure was missing. Now, with gobal warming, everyone is betting on cars powered by electricity. Well, we could have had something similar years ago with this hydrogen model. It didn't succeed because it was too early, the market didn't need it, so the infrastructure never evolved.
@sqwishdabug Hydrogen is just a way to use fossil fuels faster.
When you make electricity from fossil fuels you lose over 50% of the energy content as waste heat and renewables still cannot compete. When you make hydrogen the fossil fuels are at an advantage, both in terms of capital cost(gasification and water gas shift is cheap) and in energy efficiency; therefor wind and solar is even less competitive here.
@ThirdRomeAquilo I see that you have removed your scientifically illiterate comment out of embarassment; however, being a spiteful bastard I'm going to repost it:
wtf are you babbling on about? "gasification and water gas shift is cheap" the hell does that even mean. lol @ gasification. What a dumbass.
Anyways, Hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in the universe. The oceans are essentials the Hydrogen Fields of the future. Making Hydrogen is easier then making a cup of coffee.
what are you babbling on about? "gasification and water gas shift is cheap" the hell does that even mean. lol @ gasification. What a dumbass.
"Hydrogen is just a way to use fossil fuels faster." Wtf are you talking about?
Anyways, Hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in the universe. The ocean is esstenisaly the Hydrogen Field of the future. Making Hydrogen is easier then making a cup of coffee.
@sqwishdabug watch "who killed the electric car" electric cars were taken off the market by car and oil companies to make more money and their safer then hydrogen cars.
I can't wait till someone comes out with a device which I can plug into my boat and run off of water. Get it going off of the diesel or gas, and once the power is there, switch to hydrogen.
What is the liter per minute consumption rate of hydrogen of these cars???
How much liters per minute of hydrogen do these cars use in normal driving???
The device on my motorcycle produces over 40 liters per minute of hydrogen from water.
The device on my motorcycle also produces over 60 liters per minute of HHO gas. Is this enough hydrogen to run these cars??? Signed Norman Williams XMARINE. No joke!!!
Let's give this hydrogen initiative as a vehicle fuel a chance. It's always difficult to bring about change. Let's put the infrastructure in place now, let's do it and save energy and our planet.
Of course every living being produces CO2 during its life (even plants nightime), but if we consider just the CO2 emissions, a single car in about an hour produces more CO2 than a single human breathing for about a month.
31000 US scientists including 9000 PHDs signed a petition REJECTING global warming, passing it off as a bunch of BULLSHIT....climate change is natural it happened hundreds of times in our planet's history and its gonna continue happening.
water is made of what you stupid people water is H2O that is 2 parts hydrogen to one part oxygen you dumb asses so it is not acid rain or acid vapor it ihas a ph of 7.5 which is what water is ..a neutral ph with out hydrogen water would not be some people are so stupid they dont deserve to live
It took just 5 years?? With clean energy, it will take much much longer. Americans are not ready to accept solar powered or hydrogen fueled cars.Stuck on gas!
no. acid rain is. acid travels with vapor and rains down. if water vapor was a greenhouse gas, the world would've been done for long time ago don't you think?
lol its pure hydrogen, its then mixed with oxygen in the engine while being burnt to create energy and as hydrogen and oxygen when combined create water, you get H20 i.e. water. The tech for this has been round for decades, but why would an industry tied with the Oil tycoons push something into the market that could kill off out need for oil sooner than they need to? 2050 is a big year as oil will start running dry, thats wy these cars are now being developed, and why its taking 20yrs 2b releasd
well when bush came first into office, the hydrogen cars were a big deal. then magically they vanished not too long after, why do you think that is? then gas prices sky rocketed to $4.00.
all about the money =( stalling the hydrogen car for long enough that means people can still cash in on the oil, its down right corrupt! take nuclear fusion, it's humanities get out of jail free card, if it works it will change the planet forever, yet more money is made from ring tones that what goes into its development! it's sad to say that most politian's dont see past there tenier, and are unwilling to make the decisions that will benefit people but will mean political suicide
Plus as global warming becomes a bigger problem more electric veihicles will show up. That means they will loose profit if they dont mass produce a non poluting fuel. There are two ways Electrolosys by spliting water or by seperating natural gas. One way or another hydrogen will replace gasoline. After all fuel is money and the one who controls the fuel controls the world. We will see the infrostructure soon. They dont wanna loose out to electricl.
Ha, if only the oil companies in the world would agree to this change in order to make it happen but that will never happen as they have zillions of dollars invested in oil...
yeah lol, i wanna be as stupid as Jay, given the fact he owns more cars than your local dealership, and he has more money in his pockets now than youll make in your lifetime. oh yeah, and he builts his own steam powered cars for christ sakes. i wish i was half as stupid as Jay
So you spill gasoline on your shoe or your hand when you're fueling up. It smells but eventually evaporates and washes off. Liquid hydrogen if spilled on human skin would cause some pretty severe freeze burns.
wrong , .... at first of course like anything from cd's to flat screens it will be over priced , but once the companies invest in the infrastructure they will make larger profit margins from everyone because like they tell you they get the gas through hydrolysis for free from solar or wind. so it will happen fast and they the big companies will make more money because it's so much cheaper to produce and that is why gas will then be a luxury and taxed to hell only for the rich and their classics
I have my serious doubts about whether I'll ever see it. I like the idea of this one also using gasoline, but the tech involved in a two fuel car seems prohibitive.
well think of this. the time it took the phone to be in everyones home decades, cars decades computers , fewer decades, the time it takes to change things these days especially when you get to make huge profits after initial investments,is shorter and shorter, you will see this sooner than you think
Oops. The previous comment was not intended as a response to the video. It was intended as a response to the scam artist promoting his website that sells an add-on product to make your present car on hydrogen.
since this is a hydrogen combustion engine, not a hydrogen fuel cell, (which releases water vapor through the tailpipe). i was wondering, what this combustion engine is releasing... is it hydrogen gas?... if so how will the increase in hydrogen gas in the atmosphere affect us long term...
the engine burns the hydrogen the same way it burns gasoline, and here as well water will come out of the tail pipe as your only "exhaust", since the hydrogen joins with oxygen from the air to release engergy.
Sweet!! They make an all electric lotus, a hydrogen BMW, and I bet they both cost more than 90,000$!! Four arms lengths out of reach of the general consumer. Jesus, they make these cars and only the rich people can afford them. When there are more middle class than rich niggers. Thanks for screwing us out of the option for an enviromentally friendly auto you fucking car makers. By the time efficient cars are within my financial reach I'll be fucking dead facefirst in a pile of shit!!!
bmw's idea isn't very good. it needs a v12 engine just to get 260 horse power, so it's not the best of ideas, but it's still a prototype. but i think fuel cells are better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jay, do you know that hydrogen gas is very bad for the ozone. Hydrogen do burn very clean but if the hydrogen gas ever leaked into the atmosphere. The gas would go up into the ozone layer and this happens H2 + O3 -> H2O + O2 damaging the ozone layer. Hydrogen gas is also very explosive. It was not the paint that blew up the air ship. Psss it was the hydrogen gas.
2040, the world has switched to hydrogen, scientists say the large production of h2o is causing an imbalance in the earths atmosphere

colemckelviedotca 1 year ago
as nice as hydrogen sounds i have one main concern, the emmissions of course is water and thats all fine and good however what happens when you take one on the road in a cooler climate now maybe one or two would be ok however if there are many hydrogen cars on the road you get lots of water coming out of the pipes it will turn to ice on our roads that is a bad thing we have all this black ice causing all kinds of accidents
leviticusthesexy 1 year ago
@leviticusthesexy
well, its not like it is pumping gallons of water a second out the tail pipe, its mostly vapor. And I think I would rather brave the possibility of some black ice instead of continuing to destroy all of creation... lol Besides Hydrogen is much easier to make than Gasoline. Therefore would end up costing very little as soon as things get going.
RTJaKaL 1 year ago
@leviticusthesexy LOL its a 7 series BMW....I don't know if you have driven one but you do not lose control that easy...also thats what you can come up with against this car? water leaking?
DrGamble28 1 year ago
The BMW Hydrogen 7 gets about 5mpg on liquid hydrogen. And it is a V-12. I think it is possible to build an all hydrogen car getting 15 mpg running on a smaller engine using compressed hydrogen instead. That way many all crafts on Earth is clean.

thestuffz 2 years ago 4
golden4eva8 2 years ago
You are confused, we talk about "Hydrocarbons" meaning these fuels are in liquid form or there is water in them. Hydrogen is a substance itself independent from carbon.
H2O hydrogen without carbon and CO2 carbon without hydrogen. Hydrogene is found without carbon. In other words, Hydrocarbon (notice Hydro is mentioned first) is carbon attached to hydrogen and not the other way.
Custodio1701 2 years ago
it's also found in water, attatched to oxygen. And the oxygen is later reattached and the result is yet again water.
wihlke 1 year ago
@golden4eva8 Dude the hydrogen is made from breaking up water molecules into its fundamental components..
tinhlazi 1 year ago
@tinhlazi I thought that at first, too, but just had a look on Wikipedia, there are different ways of how you "produce" hydrogen. Apparently, there is the procedure you describe, but there are also procedures which do indeed create CO2.
I don't know enough about chemistry, would be interesting how the hydrogen is created for commercial use.

thank goodness for the hydrogen car. I can't wait until we move on without gasoline! it's finally happening. Maybe before we all die of old age and our kids take over the world we'll own one of these first.

Don't get your hopes up. Jack Nicholson was promoting a hydrogen car back in the 70s :P
Gunnariffic 1 year ago
@Gunnariffic That may be true, but people are far more concerned with the environment in the present day. It's more likely to take place now then it would in the 70's. It has to happen eventually, I just hope we're all around to see it.
sqwishdabug 1 year ago
@sqwishdabug
Yah eventually.Heh yeah I hope I'm around to see more than the hydrogen car that is of importance. I don't need a slimmer tv, I need a starship ;)
Gunnariffic 1 year ago
@sqwishdabug still need oil and coal and all that crap to make the energy to extract hydrogen from water... so its NEVER gunna be gone.
junglemage666 1 year ago
@junglemage666 In the end it always comes down to the total energy footprint. You need energy to extract the hydrogen? Yes. You also need energy to drill for oil, to refine it and to transport it to where it's needed.
You can say the same thing about electricity powered cars: To craft their batteries, a lot of energy is needed.
Still, both enectricity and hydrogen powered cars probably have the lowest energy footprint.
omir1 1 year ago
@sqwishdabug Unfortunately, it's not happening. BMW has had these hydrogen cars ready for the market since the early nineties, but they never succeeded on the market because the infrstructure was missing. Now, with gobal warming, everyone is betting on cars powered by electricity. Well, we could have had something similar years ago with this hydrogen model. It didn't succeed because it was too early, the market didn't need it, so the infrastructure never evolved.
omir1 1 year ago
@sqwishdabug
You won't see it, believe me. You will die and rot before a hydrogen car ever gets purchased by an average consumer... :D
rock3tcat 1 year ago
@sqwishdabug Hydrogen is just a way to use fossil fuels faster.
When you make electricity from fossil fuels you lose over 50% of the energy content as waste heat and renewables still cannot compete. When you make hydrogen the fossil fuels are at an advantage, both in terms of capital cost(gasification and water gas shift is cheap) and in energy efficiency; therefor wind and solar is even less competitive here.

No joke!!!

lol its pure hydrogen, its then mixed with oxygen in the engine while being burnt to create energy and as hydrogen and oxygen when combined create water, you get H20 i.e. water. The tech for this has been round for decades, but why would an industry tied with the Oil tycoons push something into the market that could kill off out need for oil sooner than they need to? 2050 is a big year as oil will start running dry, thats wy these cars are now being developed, and why its taking 20yrs 2b releasd

ExposingUncleSham 2 years ago
wrong , .... at first of course like anything from cd's to flat screens it will be over priced , but once the companies invest in the infrastructure they will make larger profit margins from everyone because like they tell you they get the gas through hydrolysis for free from solar or wind. so it will happen fast and they the big companies will make more money because it's so much cheaper to produce and that is why gas will then be a luxury and taxed to hell only for the rich and their classics

I have my serious doubts about whether I'll ever see it. I like the idea of this one also using gasoline, but the tech involved in a two fuel car seems prohibitive.

since this is a hydrogen combustion engine, not a hydrogen fuel cell, (which releases water vapor through the tailpipe). i was wondering, what this combustion engine is releasing... is it hydrogen gas?... if so how will the increase in hydrogen gas in the atmosphere affect us long term...
midgetman433 2 years ago
the engine burns the hydrogen the same way it burns gasoline, and here as well water will come out of the tail pipe as your only "exhaust", since the hydrogen joins with oxygen from the air to release engergy.
