I saw the Blues Brothers at the Universal Amp in '78 (opening up for Steve Martin on the "King Tut" tour), but forgot what a good harp player Aykroyd is. Sure he's no James Cotton, but the guy can flat out play the blues. Thanks for posting -- that was great.
I love Dan in his role of Elwood. He's talented and so good human being. But yet, when you see "Elwood" performing alone, "Jake" is truly missed. Both were such a duo. Anyway, Dan puts his heart into the performance and brings those cool times of the 1980s.
label in 1951. It was released again in 1954 under the name Bill Haley and the Comets on the Essex label. This time it was released as a 45 and an EP, with "Dance with a Dolly" and "Rocket 88" on the A side. It was not released on an album at that time. Although, you can find it on the album "The Best Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954".
You can also find the Ike Turner version on the album "Rhythm Rockin' Blues"
This song was originally released in 1951. It was recorded by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, though they were in reality, Ike Turners band the Kings of Rhythm. Turner is the actual author, though credit is given to
Brenston. This release, however, was not the one that became a hit, nor is it the one that is considered the "first" rock & roll record. That credit goes to Bill Haley (known as Bill Haley and the Saddlemen at the time). It
What people fail to realize is that without Aykroyd and Belushi doing the Blues Brothers act all those years ago extended and revitalized the careers of many R&B artists who were out of the limelight in the late 70s and early 80s.
@gladiator... Off beat and slightly off key is what the blues is. It's soulful and emotional. Perfect example... Son House - John the Revelator. Look it up. Enjoy it.
Has anyone considered that Belushi and Ackroyd probably did more to elevate the blues greats by doing the Blues Brothers than anyone other than Clapton, The Stones and maybe a couple of others? Plus, they didn't just cover the songs, they said "Go out and buy as many blues records as you possibly can".
Ackroyd is off key and behind the beat. Well, he is an actor not a singer or musician, which apparently gives him the right to butcher this tune. His enthusiasm helps but oh well.
i like dan because he seems to like the same songs i liked---even though i am older than dan ---i appreciate him for at least trying to sing them---nobody will be like the originals
@OL55CADDY Actually, the original is by Jackie Brenston. Brenston was sax and lead singer for Ike Turner and when Sam Phillips recorded it, he released it under Turner, but sold the rights off to Chess Records who released it as Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, giving Brenston full credit for his work. It was Brenston that wrote and sang Rocket 88. It was not Ike Turner.
I love it! He's a good harp player and has an absolute love and passion for Blues. I wasn't thrilled when he brought brother Jim into the Blues Brothers, but so what? This clip is great. high energy and joyous.
it was NOT this song started rock. Sun's was shuffle beat, broken amp + attitude but blues. It was Arthur Crudup played rock first and opened doors for Elvis who by back-referral opened doors for black rockers Chuck Berry, Little Richard and more. Went to the Valhalla Cinema in Melbourne AU for the best part of 5 years (in the 80's) nearly every Friday to watch Blues Brothers. Love it! Love his harp and the blues that they play!
I wonder if his Tourettes helped him with his dancing or music ability. I have Tourettes and I have read about this happening with both music and/or poetry. Mozart may have had Tourettes.
and as i heard it, the blues bros only started cos they couldnt book enough musical acts for sat nite live, so they decided to fill in on the weeks they didnt have anyone else booked. does anyone know if this is true? pretty fantastic if true, eh?
Dan Aykroyd is THE entertainer, largely underestimated today. A man born to be a clown: everything he does, everything he says, it is just spectacular. Sometimes his introductions to the blues Brothers were even funnier than the songs themselves! and the technological or religious lines in Ghostbusters, the way he acted: born to be on stage! Great Dan, thank you!

It was produced by Sam Phillips at the Sun Records Studio.

Everything I ever read or heard about this lists Ike Turner as the songwriter and arranger for this tune.
Somewhere I have an old recording of B.B. King's radio program wherein B.B. King states the same.
I'll have to get a copy of Ike's autobiography to see what he says about it.
Please enlighten me as I don't believe Ike Turner has gotten enough credit for his contributions.
Where did you hear/read otherwise?

Went to the Valhalla Cinema in Melbourne AU for the best part of 5 years (in the 80's) nearly every Friday to watch Blues Brothers. Love it! Love his harp and the blues that they play!

The Blues Brothers were one of a kind and the Best without a doubt, but Aykroyd's harp playing is probably the worst I have ever seen or heard, ever.

He's awesome on all of the Blues Brother's LPs. This video doesn't do him justice.
anshbo70 3 years ago
He's decent on them, better than some.

I'm a 70's SNL fan(atic), so I must say I'm pretty biased.

I wonder if his Tourettes helped him with his dancing or music ability. I have Tourettes and I have read about this happening with both music and/or poetry. Mozart may have had Tourettes.

Have you been posting that on all the Dan Ackroyd videos?

bandyt22 3 years ago
It's interesting how he made fun of those old blues guys yet showed respect for them in the music.

I heard it started as them doing it between skits during commercials for the audience and it became a life of its' own.
senorbellaco 3 years ago
and as i heard it, the blues bros only started cos they couldnt book enough musical acts for sat nite live, so they decided to fill in on the weeks they didnt have anyone else booked. does anyone know if this is true? pretty fantastic if true, eh?

Dan Aykroyd is THE entertainer, largely underestimated today. A man born to be a clown: everything he does, everything he says, it is just spectacular. Sometimes his introductions to the blues Brothers were even funnier than the songs themselves! and the technological or religious lines in Ghostbusters, the way he acted: born to be on stage! Great Dan, thank you!
