God, does anyone find the final line at about 3:25 and the ending strings and piano particularly moving? What she says "define my own destiny" and the following instruments sound like something from an old film. This song is classic sounding.
I remember owning this record. This was a good record for the period it was released in. It was quite diverse for it's supposed genre which was R n' B. I liked how the record was like a journey through a classroom lesson about love with songs between the classroom takes. It was a nice idea. The one thing I hated was the bad bonus tracks on the UK release. Otherwise, it had a nice flow.
Pretty little black girl....... all pretty black girls....we are all beautifully made in his eye no man can or being can tell u different thank you very much!!!!!
@Romeobeyk please leave the gay straight drama at home we don't need to acknowledge that ur straight lauryn's messages exceeds over the gender barriers and gender stereotypes a man can listen a female can listen
She sounds amazing!!! @chica0616, could u please post lauryn hill singing "I can't take my eyes off of you?" if you don't take suggestions, then forget it. But please, please think about it. I love that song, and all I can find are covers for it. I want to hear the real thing. Please and thank you!!!!
I did not know this song, but it it is relevant to my life today!!! I'm sure it will be relevant 10, 20 years from now. Lauryn Great Prophetess. I can't wait for more of your soul stirring lyrics/music to be unleashed in the world!!!!
I love this song Lauryn Hill is amazing everything about this song is amazing; the lyrics, the instrumental music, the vocal arrangments everything its so deep and poetic with so much passion as well I am only 16 and a guy(straight) but i look for things like this in music i kno its weird but O well i cant stop playing this song its so amazing Lauryn Hill needs to come back
@VoiletHearts What does you being 15 have to do with anything? I'm sorry, but it doesn't make sense. I was 13 when this record came out and I'd listen to it everyday. So what's your point? You might as well tell us if you're right or left handed as well. It seems equally arbitrary.
@callmeIan what this person is getting at is the fact that there is still hope for today's youth. that not all of the kids have turned to listening to crappy modern pop music and that there are kids who still listen to artists with actual talent and not just autotuned crap. for example, i'm only 16 and i listen to jazz, funk, classic rock, etc. i actually make an effort to avoid all of the new shit that is put out in the music industry.
@callmeIan well i personally think he was pointing out the fact most people his age arent listening to these classic talented artists there generally listening to manufactured crap hes just letting us know theres hope and not every young persons been sucked into crap music
@AlexGiovanniE i believe the 'control' we believe to exert over any decisions in our lives is an illusion. Yes, she made the 'choice' to define her destiny, take a certain path, etc... but going by "what is meant to be will be" we can assume that she was meant to take that path all along and all her life before that point was leading up to that.
@AlexGiovanniE , Perhaps by defining her own destiny, she means that it is up to her to define or view her reality and interpret its meanings for herself. One could look the recent flooding in the South as massive destruction and upset, or a new beginning for all who will rebuild and a chance for renewed strength in community and faith. It is possible to be aware of one's destiny and make conscience choices along the path to arriving, i.e. the word destination.
@AlexGiovanniE One of the key lines in 'Everything is Everything' is "CHANGE WILL COME EVENTUALLY". Perhaps by definining her destiny she is taking a proactive role in that change. It raises the question of how much of a role do we play in our own destiny by the choices or lack of choices we make?
@poeticsuperstar im glad you found yourself, because im still confused in this crazy crazy world....and this will always be my theme song...good taste:)
@poeticsuperstar im glad you found yourself, because im still confused in this crazy crazy world....and this will always be my theme song...good taste:)
You hear the spirit of an angelic voice that evokes the sweet tenderness of Love and Reflection, a deep longing, moaning out its soulful prayer which Masterfully strokes a Universal chord in all who are privelaged to be Alive to Hear.
you can hear the stevie wonder influence in the track, her voice and the whole mood of this song.... she is a genius and trust me she is in tha bushes about to pounce on these fake industry girls that call themselves artists....... stop playin. lol. i miss u lauryn. love u girl. need one more joint from u girl!!!!!
Damn I was 11 when my mom bought this album for me. This song makes the sense for me at 21 that it didn't make when I was 11. It makes me look at my life, my former surroundings like my newly gentrified old neighborhood and while it's some sad shit to see, this song reminds me to move on with my life.
@bboywonder69 Yes... that documentary bet had on last night did a whole section just on her man.... she like is doin us so wrong! Music in general just isnt at the level it should be when she aint around yo. But i jus try not to judge cuz we never been famous so we jus dont no th circumstances she was under an why she checked out on us
