Unaccompanied electric bass solos are just a bloody conventional wank. An athletic exhibition at best, rarely creative.. If I were a bassist, (or drummer) I d want the same rhythmic and harmonic support the saxophone or the piano gets. This guy can play, but Ive already heard Larry Graham, and Stanley Clarke, in a more musical context, 40 years ago.

I have only just stumbled upon this so I obviously don't speak for the man, but I would say it comes down to honesty. I would guess from honesty in his playing that he has aimed to be true to the way his body feels most comfortable when he is communicating music. Its similar to using a particular facial expression when talking, only you would not normally question that because it has not been focussed on as much as, say, instrument technique. The result of what you would call a top-down process.
