I wish this had made it onto White Chalk - it's fantastic and further demonstrates how incredible and versatile a songwriter she is. Plus it sounds great too :)
I remember this song very well from the 1995 Thriller/Horror film "The Passion Of Darkly Noon". (Creepy Flick). It took me a while but I finally found this song on a 4 Track EP CD by John Parish & Polly Jean Harvey titled "That Was My Veil". Pretty Rare now days to find. Awesome Haunting Song.
this song reminds me of a song on the buffy episode "Once more with feeling" the one that Tara sings. i mean this in a good way. it has a joss whedon cadence to it
@ZZqezza well i love her and was very disappointed w/the show i saw in san francisco in april. she did the entire new cd (which i don't like) and a couple oldies thrown in like an afterthought.she just stood on one spot the entire time. hopefully the show will be better for you. i've been so happy with the postings i've found (mainly from you) on youtube. it's like hearing the polly i love w/all new material and "Let England Shake" was only a bad deeam.
@cmaster0007 yeah, Let England Shake is her weakest album in my opinion. For me it lacks everything which I love about Polly. I know that many people will disagree with me since PJ is famous for being a musical chameleon and it's definitely amazing how she constantly develops as an artist and LES is a nice piece of work and I like it but it doesn't touch in the way like her previous stuff do. So I hope that I will not be disappointed as well ...
@ZZqezza@ZZqezza i have no problem w/the chameleon aspect, but LES was such a one note LP if you know what I mean. i work at the old town school of folk music in chicago & it seems she was trying to do a folky thing (in her way) but i don't think it worked. and i listen to A LOT of folk at work. in concert i think she should have done "desperate kingdom of love" etc, for the added songs. the only thing she did that i think worked (of her older material) was "Pocket Knife" have fun & report!
@ZZqezza First of all a huge thank you for posting all these rare PJ clips! It's great you´ll finally get to see her live too. I saw her twice this summer and wasn't disappointed at all (even though I too don't think LES is one her greatest albums). Just don't expect to see a "rock show". It's more of a concert really and should be appreciated as such. And anyway just seeing her in person on stage is thrilling enough! ;-)
@ZZqezza In my very own opinion LES is an album which refers to today's issues from the eye of a woman not in a political way but in an emotional way. I think it is kind of masterpiece and probably one of her best works. But this opinion is just my opinion and I can understand your hesitation. PJ will probably release another album which is more personal sooner and it will also make us feel great again and again. As an artist I really appreciate her newest album which says something for world.
I think everyone is once to be a monster that wants to hide in the forest. The problem is to pull itself back from the swampy forest. But it's possible, Baron Münchausen has done it too! ;D;D;D
@gordrulez PJ Harvey is an incredibly versatile and talented songwriter. Her musical career has spanned over 20 years and many genres. Like ZZqezza said, the entire Album White chalk is sort of in this style. Some of her music is alternative rock, some is even more chill and downtempo. Personally, I'm adaptable enough to enjoy all of her music, if you're just looking for one particular vocal style, go listen to Celine Dion.
if anyone reads this can you recommend me similar songs by her or other artists? i love the vibe here. please send me a msg with some recommendations!!!

this is her only good song as far as im concerned. i just quickly browsed thru the other ones on here and they are LOUSY. i'm really let down, i thought she'd have more songs like this. but the other songs are completely different and are not listenable.
@ZZqezza It is a bit of an acquired taste.. I liked PJ as rockchick. Now i think she's the best/most intersting female artist of the past 20 yrs :-) There is a LetEnglandShake youtubechannel
@gordrulez Im sorry you feel that way...this is a very beautiful song yes.. but she is a very gifted woman...and has many layers and depth`s.... .she has so much to offer musically and lyrically, on many levels of various emotions.. and a different flavor of music and expression to suit each...I LOVE HER !!! : ) peace n love
@sunchilde68 prove it then. tell me what other comparable songs she has. i clicked a couple of the ones that had the most hits and was shocked at how crap they were. so i stopped browsing her. it was enough to make me think she's a one-hit wonder with this her only decent song.
@gordrulez I would have to agree with you. I tried some of her others too, but I was deeply dissapointed. I think you will like Rachael Yamagata (I just remembered of her). Try her songs (Black Roses Red, Be Be Your Love, Elephants..), I think they are deautiful. ;)
@gordrulez your musical range is not as broad as Ms. Harvey's. ANd I don't like this song because it hurts to hear that she felt this way. She does have soft songs, but you'll have to listen for them. Her latest album toned-down or try “Stories From the City…” Some songs get you after more than one listen. I think because she is so authentic with her feelings and lyrics. She DEFINATELY influenced a lot of musicians from the 1990s. In my years of music, I think she's a most unique talent.
Then you might be pleased to learn that PJ Harvey didn't write this. The lyrics were written by Philip Ridley for the film 'The Passion Of Darkly Noon'.
@gordrulez its called being talented and actually making your own music, go listen to top 40 if you want all songs of an artist to sound exactly the same
This is a great song. I recall there was a video of this song but set to scenes of Interview With the Vampire. It was quite well setup, but appears to have disappeared from Youtube.
Back in 97 a group called Sunscreem vs Push covered this, but they called it Please save me. They turned it into a bit of a goth club track, wonderful but PJ Harveys' original is just sublime.
@Barkermush I remember watching that film just once when I was a kid, then sitting all the way through the credits just listening to this song, utterly entranced..... Now, years later I find it again. ^_^ I love the internet.
