  • I really want one of those!! It's an amazing clock.

  • if i become a billionaire i will try to get this

    !

  • interesting, but VERY UGLY!

  • Hello,

    Absolutely beautifully crafted clock.

But I do have a question. I noticed that the clock is not progressing when it strikes. After striking three for example the clock would then be three seconds behind. In 24 hours it would run 120 seconds behind. Is this compensated for?

  • That's totally ace.

  • But did the grasshopper have to be so creepy looking?

  • It's ugly, sorry LOL!!!

  • strange as a clockwork orange!

  • finaly a clok i can look at n like not get bored of looking at ......we some at skool lmao jk but i do want one in my home thogh no lie but it looks expencive as hell

  • Great concept elaboration. Time is always of essence!

  • A wonderful device! very artisitic, too.

  • Won't it suffer a significant lag if it keeps rocking back and forth on the hour like that?

  • ive just been in cambridge and seen this, it is realy cool!

  • The alien-looking grasshopper is kind of scary, but it looks great, as does the rest of the clock. I wonder how that look for the grasshopper was settled on.

  • John Taylor is an undoubted genius but, after initial admiration, more depth of thought concluded that this clock is just a folly and a complete and utter waste of TIME.

No doubt it will prove popular but only among the followers of Harry Potter.

No doubt it will prove popular but only among the followers of Harry Potter.

  • Look at John Harrisson's clocks he build, to find Longitude, compared to them this clock is not remarkable - however it is remarcably ugly.

  • he said, it is 11 precisely.

  • this zerling is slow even with speed upgrades

  • I want one of these for my room. It is one awesome clock.

  • It looks horrible; the "creature" on the top, is it designed to frighten small children? And it is dishonest, the pendulum, the escapement, they have nothing to do with he time keeping, the whole thing is little more than a computer controlled automata.

And whilst I am at it, strictly speaking it is not a "clock" because it does not strike the hours, it is a timepiece.

  • wow! what a treat. well done for comissioning it, and well done to dr taylor for its execution. i saw a harrison grasshopper at prescot clock museum, womderful.

  • This is a awesome clock

  • That thing is hideously ugly

  • The engineering genius that this amazing timepiece embodies pushes all my happy buttons. :3

  • That is the most satanistic clock ever 'invented'.

  • What a disgusting looking thing, truly satanic...

  • doesn't it lose a few seconds every time it hits the hour? Or is it not meant to function as an actual timekeeping device?

  • Not something you'd want in your room or an old peoples home with all that clunking and whirring. Sounds like an evil robot!

  • Its not for sale, my dad built this one and is currently building another one to put in our House in the Isle Of man. He will be building 1 or 2 more which will be sold, but for several million pounds.

  • thats cool...but i dont realli get the whole thing with the grasshopper on top... =l

  • hmzso are there actually some nice guys who wanna chat with mi

  • beautiful

  • What a wonderfully creative way to tell the time! The creature, although not attractive to my eye, is fantastic to behold. The membrane over the eye that shuts every now and then, plus the system set up so that the lights appear to move. The whole piece is incredible, applause for the creator!!

  • Impressive. 5 stars.

  • all hail john harrison

  • LOL "...celebrate the release of the Chronophage and relative time onto the unsuspecting citizens of Cambridge." Aw! I wish I was there. This is a beautiful clock both aesthetically, and most definitely metaphorically.

  • I LOVE IT!

i want one in my room sooo bad.

genoius invention. i would have thought it was computer generated (thelighting)

  • Incredible!!!!! I love it!

  • Steampunk as envisioned by Cocteau. Not surprisingly, the comments by some viewers indicate that, like all high concepts, it is a both mystery & an affront to idiots. This is only one of its charms.

  • I usually use digital clocks, because the ticking just gets irritating. But I'd make an exception for this. I want a little one on my desk!

  • When I look at the clock, everytime i feel why to make this kind of a clock although its a Masterpiece then too.

  • I've never seen such a outstanding "Masterpiece" though it scares me every time i see it. It is so fascinating that i can't take off my eyes & unknowingly in this video i was observing only clock act. grasshopper sitting on top of it not the voice. Only thing that is goin on in my head is Tick-Tock

  • I am not sure what it is very wierd but creative. I really like it wish i could have it. It is truly a work of art the colors the creature.

  • It's like a giant toy.

  • It's funny that he says he wanted to create a new way of showing time. He didn't do that at all. The display is fundamentally the same as your average analog clock. It's the internal mechanics that are unconventional, and the artistry that is captivating.

  • Yeah, great friggin' invention. Don't you have anything better to do ?

I mean, WHAT IS SO GREAT about it ?

It's just a mechanical clock with a grasshopper which seems to be designed by the same person who wrote Harry Potter.

(The text also seems to come from Harry Potter)

Keep up the good work professor Taylor. We're waiting for your next huge invention.

(Maybe it will be the flying broom, to keep the Harry Potter theme)

  • What a perfectly elegant machine! I'd love to travel to see it, but it's so fascinating I'm not sure I'd be able to look away! I'm with you houdini - I'd love a smaller version for my home.

  • People. This has nothing to do with Christian faith, other than possible symbology. I say this like how there are gargoyles at Notre Dame in Paris, or many other representations in art. Some people need to pull out of their holes a little and not forget the vast rich history of humanity in its context, and see the bigger picture that God has given us to see and use. Paranoia of something like this is vastly immature.

  • How beautiful!

  • WoW Very very nic2<

  • WoW Very very Nic2

  • Shit, that's pretty cool.

I want it. A watch version would have been awesome, but will probably cost a lot.

  • that is a truely beautiful clock and pure genious

ps cavemanshelbs should be shot, hung, drawn out and quarterised

  • for all of you who don't seem to get the 'scientific purpose of this', you obviously don't live in england. We have terrifc time storms washing in from the continent and if we don't have devices like thie to eat the time surplus children can wrinkle and die in the streets and trees can burst through buildings in a second. The Queen is the only organic chronovore and as a result is our beloved undying tyrant. Praise her!

  • that's some amazing shit

  • I unexpectedely came across this whilst bumbling round the city t'other day and it blew my mind.

  • The rotating vernier slits backed by LEDs to display the "movement" of time is a brilliant blend of the classical with the modern. It is an inspired work of art.

  • If you are going to to spend £1M of your own money and spend four years of your life on anything than do something that will benefit mankind. Not on an invention that is only accurate every 4 mins and is only noticeble in the dark. It has broke down several times and will only last for about 200 years.

  • whats it counting down too?

    looks like doom!

  • I want that thing in my house.

  • I love the Irony. A video about a clock which symbolizes the eating away of time, while this video eats away my time. fantastic.

  • I want that clock...

  • It's Freaking Awesome!

Now if he can make a wristwatch version, I would buy one.

  • What a terrifying creature... And yet so very beautiful.

  • rofl the cats face

  • Thats pretty good,he's got a ton of money to piss around with ..

  • cool ass lookmin thingy man!

  • I wanna see the grasshopper hit 4:20 .

  • so it works off gravity?

  • This is absolutely fascinating.I'm drawn in, remarkable.

  • Just found this video. Wow. What an amazing mechanism. At the description of the vernier slits in the wheels, my jaw dropped. I pictured lights going on and off around the outside, not a wheel moving through only six degrees each second. What an amazing, beautiful thing.

  • I'm a Christian and I think it's beautiful.

  • One of the dumbest things i have ever seen.

  • Yes it's artistic, yes it's expressive, and no doubt the acoustics soothing as well is eerie. However, at the end of may, it's just a clock. Not to mention I rather fancy the earlier, more simplistic models, but that's not to knock this one. All's well.

  • amazing!

  • i saw this, i was amazed at how big it was, and the way in which it worked.

  • OK that thing is creepy .... amagine having to try and sleep with one of those in ur room ...*shivers*

  • pimp clock

  • Absolutely brilliant in concept and execution. A precious jewel for Cambridge which I hope to see in person some day. Thank you, Prof. Taylor.

  • "I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten" Joel 2:25/Bible

  • So time is a vampiric grasshopper???

  • The nerd in me approves of this. I must have one!

The message is especially amazing to me. Especially with the way that Americans are slaves to time.

  • thats huge

  • Cool clock..

  • This man is a genius! To create a clock this advanced, that is amazing!

  • wow... who cares it looks evil.. i wan't one!!

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... boring

  • This is really great. I love the chronophage!

  • i agree this is ungodly.. god hates ugly creatures like that!

shame on you science and technology

  • wasn't sure what to expect when i came here off the site i was reading about it on, but this thing is abslutely brillient.

It's elegant, and has a really cool way of mixing the mechanics.

I absoultely want one of these.

  • It certainly is innovative in terms of appearance but I'm not really sure this qualifies as an invention--after all, it is just a clock when you strip away the trappings of the LED lights and grasshopper creature crawling across its surface. For me the coolest aspect of this device is the blending of old and new. The clock itself looks ancient with its burnished gold face, and pendulum while its LEDs, disc structure and resident creepy-crawly give it a modern yet decidedly alien aura.

  • When I saw this at Time magazine I thought it would be a very stupid invention but now that i look at it in motion I am FASCINATED~!!! I want it!! lol

  • wtf

i don't get it. a gold clock with an ugly thing on top, that manages to slow dont once an hour and stay on time? i'd like this more if it didn't have the thing on top and especially if it wasn't being billed as some big scientific thing. whats so sceintific about this?

  • what's scientific is that it's self-propelling, and it wouldn't work without "the ugly thing on top." if that means nothing to you, then it's obviously just way over your head

  • Were you looking for some WWF clips and happen to find this video by mistake?

  • That great ugly thing as you call it,is the grasshopper escapement to commemmorate the invention byJohn Harrison, the man who later cracked Longitude navigation, and thus giving the British supremacy at sea.John Taylor is one of the ten best inventors in the world. He didn`t want it to be a scientific discovery, rather a celebration and an object to fascinate people.A celebration of two geniuses I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ cavemanshelbs

    It's WAY over your head.

  • Do they sell one at Costco?

    I'm hip!

  • Its obviously too much for you to comprehend

  • You need to listen to Mr. T more and stay in school.

  • Apparently they filed something like 4 patents in the making of it, something to do with the turning mechanism. I think the mechanism was only ever a theory and this guy made it a reality.

Also apparently the raised bits were done with controlled explosions underwater (so they were all equal in size) in some secret swiss nuclear test facility (or so the story goes).

Oh and it only pulls 60 watts of power.

Not sure if that makes it great, but hopefully answers a few of your questions :)

  • And actually, CavemanShelbs, It's only the correct time once every five minutes. the rest of the time the unusual jerkiness makes it incorrect.

Just because Stephen Hawking was the presenter at the unveiling doesn't make it scientific... It isn't some big scientific thing and isn't being billed as such. It's a beautiful work of mechanics.

  • It's art, moron. To deep for your small brain to understand.

  • It isn't a clock for primitive cavemen, you know ? It's art, too deep for your small brain to comprehend.

  • thats because you dont understand it....its..a mixture of the led..and John Harrison..a marvalous machine..which may..replace the other clocks...so CavemanShelbs..FUCK IT!

  • It's not so much about science as more as it is art blending from old world methods and new world technology.

  • I wholeheartedly concur with you caveman! I've never seen such an utter bunch of clapped out junk in my entire life. I'd rather watch the timer on my washing machine ;-D

  • CavemanShelbs: You have no soul. This is a thing of beauty.

  • its a work of art and science and more than just telling time its has a beautiful and quirky story that is its raison d'etre.

I guess you could say the same thing about a supermodel, after all she's just another human, has eyes, ears and bleeds like us.

Or you could say she's extraordinary, exceptional, even archetypal. Perhaps your 'caveman' moniker befits you.

  • he said it quite the first sentence:

    TIME IS RELATIVE

  • shut up.

  • Your login's pretty apt.

  • So you don't get it. Why tell the world about it?

  • @CavemanShelbs

Listen to what he is explaining and you will understand what it's about!

It is entirely mechanical and depicts the "relativity" of time according to the observer....

  • @CavemanShelbs to the skeptics , decrease friction and precision

  • Wow, absolutely genious!

  • umm.. genius?

  • i saw that

  • Brilliant -old world meets LED new world. Simply fascinating. Can I buy a smaller one for my home?

  • yes it shows the time...yes he has made a different way to tell the time....but it still tells the time just like a £3 watch from the market...........this bloke is going to his grave not knowing what i big waste ov time he has spent his time on......its art and nothing else, but of corse when it comes to art we have to say we thinks its great because we don't want to come over as uneducated, this bloke is an anorak wrapped up in his own world and getting paid for it, don't humour him

  • yea.. i was thinking about same thing: my own time-eater clock.

  • for some reason. i cant seem to get whats so impressive about this, other than the guy who seems smart

  • Is it that with this time can no longer be manipulated by the destroyers amongst men no more? Humanity's request is being heard, afterall!

  • @JohnF30Music

    its shiny?

  • What a fantastically beautiful device for showing time bot literally and metaphorically.

The most impressive aspect of it is that it is mechanical!

    Cheers to the inventor.

  • i want this clock, but seems expensive or not for sell

  • @TheArbitar

It's only being sold for 1.8 million dollars, Im sure you can afford a couple.

  • Totally evil! I wonder who funded this thing!!! I'm not sure that this any more engineering than art. That chain clanging into the "coffin" is eerie, too!

  • Amazing, utterly amazing.

The invention, the mechanics, the artistry, and the message- everything about this is great!

This truly is a work of art :)

  • thats a gnarly grasshopper =)

  • It really makes you think about time. I like this clock - very unique and for some strange reason the sound of the clock didn't bother me like a tick-tick clock does. The english guy commentating adds a certain sophistication as well. Good job.

  • wow, i want one!

  • the grasshopper is quite scary looking but the gold-plated face looks a bit yellow-ish in the flesh. Clever concept though.

  • thats beautiful :)

  • Forgot to add, it looks evil too haha.

  • Wow totall satanic device.... Locust on the top (from the bible) With a sting, and razor sharp teeth, reptillian eyes...omg, to the unsuspecting public!!!!! it's a disk with horn's and wing's on it, n ( 6 ) pyramids in the middle....ahaha....Anyone read revalations latley!? Chapter nine perhaps. It's a message .....So sublimininal...

  • Wow!

Instead of viewing this as an amazing work of art, or a message of what a slave humanity is to time, you decide to take it the bible-thumping way and totally disregard its beauty and genious. You scream blasphemy! Typical.

Stop looking for "subliminal messages" in great inventions and open your eyes. You dont need to scrutinize works of art- Satan is around us blatently. Hes not hiding in a clock.

Its people like you who turn people AGAINST God.

Oh, and by the way, I'm a Christian too.

  • I am in total agreement with you fellow christian. I find the creature very frightening.

  • Dr Taylor invented the clock, Stephen Hawkin unveiled the clock on 19th September in Cambridge

  • ok so i dont understand... is there something revolutionary about this clock, or is it just a neat clock?

  • the haunted clock of naughtinham

  • Hehe the clocks LED are not working at the moment .

  • We can confirm that the Corpus Clock has stopped three times since installation. The latest stoppage was at 5.35pm on Monday. These have been standard shut-downs due to safety checks to test for problems.

The computer which runs safety checks shuts down the clock if it detects anything that it does not understand. This enables the engineers to investigate and ensures the mechanical integrity is never compromised.

  • I really like this clock, it's beautiful

  • Its not just a clock. Like the guy said its trying to exadgerate time passing to a more poignant degree a little different to your average kitchen hand clock or digital casio LOL

  • I like it, but it is scary looking. The guy whgo designed it certainly is creative and thoughtful though. It is creepy though.

  • Yes, it's functional utility is basically that of a clock apparently.

An engineer's fine piece of art.

  • This is not a clock. It's a piece of art with every finish detail hand sculpted. KUDOS 4 those who keep the mechanical art alive.

  • if it is just a clock, like the skeptics here seem to think, then it is only interesting as a formal design. However, if it is a clock that keeps linear time while running at different speeds at different times, then it is very interesting as a mechanism also.

  • This clock is awesome.

    Kudos to the creator(s).

    Arno aka Eol

  • it is a grasshopper because the a clock maker back then made a "grasshopper escapement" so he enhanced the image of it and it still does it's job as an escapement

  • i dont get it, its just a clock?

  • a clock with an original design but there is not interesting

  • It looks like something out of the Neverending Story.

  • very very cool

  • wow, its a 1600s clock with leds....

    meh

    academia is really scraping bottom.

  • That has to be the coolest looking clock that I have ever seen

  • But wouldn't it be put behind in seconds, each time it rings the hour? Because the seconds seem to resume from the start after that. While when the clock rings the hour, it takes up a deal of seconds to complete. :/ Or does the actual time not matter?

  • How beautiful!

  • Beautiful, Artistic, Clever, innovative using a vernier makes it kind of magic.

"Only 60 watts" is interesting. With LED's 60 watts could light up half a home. Fibre optics could have fixed this so it would run on a D cell.

Someone went to the bother of putting a sprung clock together with old technology, changed the way the hands worked (light obstruction VS solid arms)

This is in truth art: an art I appreciate.

    Science,,, no; but wonderful art.

    Congratulations!

  • cool

  • cool!

  • This is(obviously)a very unusual time keeper. Its artistry and design are captivating..the time and work put into its creation are unimaginable.

  • does this count as Steampunk?

  • This is fucking awesome, wow! Amazing, extremly ingenious!!.... No seriously what the fuck, it's just a clock and it's more complicated to read than a fucking numerical watch

  • If you think that clock is hard to read, you're slow--I'm sorry.

  • why grasshopper;;;

  • because it uses the grasshopper escapement.

  • look up grasshopper escapement and you'll get a handful of videos which show a better description of a grasshopper escapement. Its amazing to watch at work.

And unlike the description says, it is known why it works. Its actually quite simple if yo stare for a bit

  • nice, cute, very good, AWESOME...

    but not incredible.

  • I like this clock because it makes me think of all the work people put into it. It also looks really cool. It's too bad some people don't see the beauty of it.

  • Pretty interesting. The grasshopper looks eerie but reminds me of something from you'd see in some from ancient mythology while the clock looks futuristic yet ancient at the same time. Sci-fi maybe?? Needs to be a little more quiet though.

I'd go if I didn't live all the way across the country.

  • Lovely time piece. But I'll save some cash in the electric department and smear some fire fly bioluminescence on my imitation rolex movements, after I've covered it with a series of "veneer slits". Now, all I have to do is farm the little buggers.

  • a clock that displays sec mins and hours with light? that is such and old idea and already exists. i don't get why they have to scale it up three times? this is junk

  • IT is weird

  • Time is a sea which opens where you cleave

Yet roils over what you leave behind.

    Nick Gordon

  • Absolutely mesmerising. Sidney Holt

  • David icke says, that aint no grass hopper thats a demon reptillian

  • LOL

  • As fascinating as this is, I have to ask... Who ever gets the idea to sit on a hot stove?!
