  • great video thanks

  • very interesting video thanks

  • When I farted the other day I was in the middle of enjoying the sweet sound when my neighbours shouted "keep the noise down!"

  • หนีเงียบ

  • beautiful soul

  • 2:13 Straight baller.

  • He seems very amused. LOL! Lovely video, thank you for posting! Metta.

  • Sound is sound.

Noise is sound, that is being interpreted and tainted with thought, after it has entered your awareness.

And indeed... we are everything we perceive.

Everything manifests itself through our perception.

    All is one.

  • He talks about us as "sound".

  • Gassho Dai-Osho!

  • Wonderful..!

  • @Hatetotiewords No it is Shunryu Suzuki. He used to call himself "the small Suzuki", while D.T. is the "big one".

  • I love this lecture, it makes so much sense to me.

  • He is like a light radiating good vibes. You can feel it from here.

  • every time i watch this i feel so happy, there is definitly something about this man, i love the genuine smile and laugh

  • @LEVRAIVRAIZEN Practicing meditation, quieting yourself and all the whole experience that follows with that is not at all like drinking alcohol. Autosuggestion, like you have hypnotized yourself into believing you are doing something 'spiritual?"

I don't understand what you are trying to say.

  • @LEVRAIVRAIZEN We have monkey mind, but our true nature is Buddha nature. I'm not Buddhist, but I use their terminology to express my experience w/both of these natures. Meditation helps to wipe the mirror clean of dust, allowing me to see Reality.. As monkey mind is quieted & taken out of the center, Buddha nature/reality is better experienced. I chose to love and accept this Reality. This is a good path for me, and I'm very thankful and glad it is available & I'm on it.

  • this video looks like to me SOUND !

  • I love his voice, the humor in his eyes, and his 'broken' English. Listening to Roshi is music to my ears.

  • this video looks like to me NOISE !

  • @LEVRAIVRAIZEN Sorry but that is your noise. Listen more carefully and one hears the sound of deep wisdom. Musicians understand this. The way you play reflects your mental states. You hit the wrong notes, make the wrong noise, if you are not fully present, and therefore in a sense not there at all. Brad Warner (a zen priest and punk rock musician) writes about this in his wonderful book, Hardcore Zen, which is maybe a good way to understand zen for someofus. All good wishes, Andrew.

  • One of my favorite youtube clips.

  • this is powerfull stuff. we life in a bright new world now is always new.

  • showzen

  • ive seen this tuns of times. Everytime my mind tryes to categorice him and fails. I have such a fixed program I have to judge. He is like a mirror in some way. This is a really amazing spirit. thx for the upload!

  • Bonjour ou bonsoir, quelqu 'un peut-il, me faire la traduction,de l'entretien de : Shunryu Suzuki Roshi

  • thanks for vid, its great to see this man in motion

  • Carl Sagan said, "We are star stuff." and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."

In fact, all the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago.

Really, aren't we all just walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking it back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all?

    enjoy the dance.

(And remember, ultimately there is nothing that separates us from all others in this wondrous mystery. Please be kind.)

  • What a great response, my friend. Really got me thinking. :)

  • Thank you Nanteos.

From one pile of empty awakened stardust to another.

  • he is trying to say Brughes

  • love what you said. tuning my guitar. this explains my clinkers. feeling more objective today, lol

  • Bluejay not there... then I'm not here. Wonderful!!! Now I understand... I'm there... I am not.

  • inspiring

  • Good video but for fuck sakes people it's "bluejay" not bruejay

  • Japanese doesn't have L.

  • words are empty.

  • excellent video... i will keep it in my playlist... thank you :)

  • im so gratefull thx

  • Amazing! Such depth. Thank you!

  • There's a reason he created one of the highest Buddhist lineages on American soil.

  • This is fantastic! I recently read Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's 'Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind' and it's great to place the sound of his voice in the words I read.

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • I was laughing out load towards the end, this is a classic gem.

  • wat da hell is dis???

  • "When you are not disturbed by bruejay, you know, bruejay wil come right into your heart, and you wil be a bruejay, and bruejay will be reading something."

    amazing piece of footage.

  • He's saying, don't think that "the bruejay is over my roof", just let things occur as they do naturally, without reacting. Do not think that the bruejay should or should not be over your roof. The bruejay simply is. And in your zen practice, so are you. Practice is done without reacting to your surrounding, and ultimately without reacting to your own mind. See the Zen book called Huang Po: Transmission of Mind. Also see Hamsa Yoga. If you do not get Zen meditation, find another style : )

  • what is the point of all that talking?

If it is noise or sound or a bird, it does not matter, ignore it, go back to your breath, and finished

  • the nondualism....

  • Not finished. There is no end. The end is.

  • Ignore NOTHING!

  • This guy smokes so many bowls

  • hahahahaha hes so stoned

  • lets all live hi

  • i agree :) the purpose of our life is to be happy

  • it is so wonderful that this video exists....Roshi was a great teacher...

  • thx 4 posting the vid

  • suzuki rules !!!!!!

  • luna en verano

    los mosquitos y el gato

    loca encantada

  • There's so much noise on Youtube. It's nice to hear some sound.

  • recognize the noise as a sound that already exists within you and it will remain sound. thats kinda the point hes makeing. soften the noise by understanding the noise as a potentiality within you. then all is sound. all is "peace"

  • I get that, I was just using the terms differently than he was.

  • @SJamesGray the only noise on YouTube is what you're making in your mind. Whether you hear noise or sound is up to you.

  • @shochikubai26

I see with my sword of discrimination, I've cut myself to bits. :)

  • @SJamesGray well, Isn't the video saying that it is sound also? . (:

  • @glantz91 Precisely :)

  • If you look to compare knowledge to knowledge, you will never find happiness. For all knowledge is the same, true and beautiful. None is above the other... It only bothers you to see it that way. Perspective is priceless. :]

  • haha good one

  • Shunryu Suzuki is one of my favorite teachers...i love the way he explains zen concepts

  • Students are way too serious looking, ain't they? Peep peep peep. Hee hee!

  • i love this guy

  • a wise man - if only he was better at speaking english, or if he spoke in japanese which was translated to best convey his true message...

    haha and 2:16 was funny

  • A fascinating man.

  • Wonderful..!!

  • peep - peep - peep Hahahaha...love this one.

  • Bird is here, you know, in my mind already, and I am singing with the bird.

  • The teaching of non-discrimination is so beautiful---A Lotus to all.

  • So not me being conscious of it - just consciousness

  • Very helpful. A lovely man.

  • grande insegnamento

  • 2:16 :)

  • he is not a psychologist I think

  • Every meditator is beyond a psychologist. The psychologist is interested in the behavior of the mind, and his understanding is limited to indirect knowledge from his experiments on mind.

The meditator is interested in the direct perception of the fundamental nature of the mind.

  • Gassho

  • This is a beautiful sound. Thank you.

  • What an incredible man. I am half way through 'Zen Mind, Beginners Mind' and love it. Peace

  • thank you...peace

  • Much respect for a wise master.

  • kamil-i mursid.

  • This is good stuff, you know.

  • i love this joy.

  • It make me think about why we seek for new things, and about why we are bored by the things we have herd more than once. We want new things, for we stopped listening as soon as we start believing we know. New things are outside us, but as soon as they become known they live inside us. We long for the objective... running from subjective. So much so that we start treating the subjective as objective only to be able to live... in ignorance. We long for ignorance

  • +1000.

The miraculous thing about sound (and other sensory input), that you can't really classify it as a 'thing' of traditional means.

Oh, I also lolled out of my chair after 2:10+

  • Isn't he saying that it is not an input but actually an output ?

  • Why do we seek things? The 3 poisons ;)

    Peace,

    Wade

  • I read some books earlier from Shunryu Suzuki, but this is the first time I saw him on video. He seems to be a truly interesting, joyful character. To be honest, he reminds me of Yoda. :-)

  • "The Dharma of Star Wars", by Matthew Bortolin; Wisdom Publications.

  • Thank you for posting this. One thousand blessings upon you.

  • For anybody that tried to find my explanation of Suzuki's remarks about the bluejay on a search engine other than google, my apologies! Please try the search one more time with "shunryu suzuki zen ordinary activity" for the criteria. may the force be with you! yers truly, Mark

  • it is amazing to hear him speak and see him in action. thank you for posting this

  • Rare to find the real thing... As the others have said, if you have any more please share!

  • Wow. So that's Suzuki. Beautiful man. I feel sad that he's gone. But thanks for the glimpse.

  • He's not gone, I saw a blue jay just yesterday, and continued reading my book, tweet tweet :)

  • Ty for this, 2:50 to 3:10 just blew my mind, hes more like a diamond than anything for me, peace all

  • That's astonishing. I've searched throughout the internets looking for any video or audio recorded by Suzuki Roshi himself, and I was beginning to believe that there wasn't such thing.

Where did you get this? If you have more, please publish it!

  • I have an explanation of how the sound of a bluejay can read, an explanation that I hope will appeal to anyone who is struck by the poetry of Shunryu Suzuki's remarks. You can find it if you search on "suzuki zen ordinary activity"; my heart-felt thanks to Shunryu Suzuki, and to those who have made this video available. yours truly, Mark

  • As a nonpracticing Buddhist I must attribute my receiving this video to a very close friend who is a Buddhist. Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's message is interesting and I think I'll seek out one of his books.

QUESTION: Is there one special book by this remarkable man that I should begin with? I would greatly appreciate recommendations

    jgrantKansas

  • I started with Not Necessarily So, and THEN discovered Zen Mind, Beginner Mind. It actually worked out perfectly, though it likely *should* go in the opposite direction. Both are wonderful for the bath!

  • I picked up Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind while cleaning someones house a few years ago and have read it every day since. It seems to get clearer with every reading. So grateful for this video.

  • Thank you for sharing this with us. I am sure that Shunryu Suzuki's books have been as much an inspiration to many as much as they have to me. To be able to hear his words is a rare gift.

  • Thank you for putting this here! Shunryu Suzuki's book 'Not always so' is one of the most precious books to me. Never thought it would be possible to actually 'see' him like this. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful being.

  • I hope that there will be many more postings, his presence is words beyond words. Thanks

  • This is so cool. Damn, that guy smiles a lot. I'd like to be like that. Really beautiful. "We die, and we do not die." -Shunryu Suzuki. Thanks for the post!

  • ingenious, and so true! thank you.

  • Thank you for sharing ^^
