Well engine sounds radical only because the Choke is more then half closed, i used to have a stock engine with a holley on it and close it more then half way and would sound bad ass with it, curious what that engine really sounds like with the choke completely off, dont know why he is even tryin to adjust the idle air screws with the choke damn near closed..
@ACHEESEDANISH00 If this was the first startup, yeah. It tured over a bunch before starting, then idled at less than 2000 RPM. I would not buy that engine if that was the breakin.
@ACHEESEDANISH00 If it's a flat tappet cam you are likely to trash cam and lifters with a slow idle on first start up.. Idealy 2 to 2.5 grand for 30 min to break a flat tappet in , a slow idle isn't doing the rings any good either , you need to get a load on them forceing them against the cylinder walls to get them to seat.. A dyno or vehicle with a few moderately hard runs before the cylinder walls start to glaze usually does the trick..

I like the worlds cheapest tach on the stand and the fact that when the guy adjusts the idle mixture UPSIDE DOWN the RPMs DROP instead of going UP! LMAO! Oh well, if you believe this engine is making 650 hp you can do whatever you want.
By the way, ALL engines have "cams" in them and they don't necessarily ADD lots of hp, the cam(shaft) tells you where you will make hp, low, mid or high end.
How many motors have you built without any breathers in the valve covers or intake? You have to relieve the crankcase pressure some how don't you think, just food for thought there:)
I don't understand why people still build these old gen1 Chevys. They were great "back in the day", but are mostly a waste of money now. I'll take a newer lq4 with l76 heads and l92 intake, along with a somewhat mild cam....and make just as much REAL power as these buys are claiming. Even in old-school cars, the LSX is where it's at for reliable power.
@salemetro because you can still build a gen 1 Chevy thats a beast for little cost compared to later models. Not everyone has $10,000 to dump into an engine build. If you know what you're doing you can build this type of engine for less than $3,000. I f i had the money, I'd go LS, but since I dont, I'll stick with building what people sell on craigslist for $150. Hell, sometimes they give them away. lol
@jhamilton07 650hp out of an LSX costs nowhere near $10k...try $3500-$5000 if you know what you're doing. The stock cranks have been proven to over 1000hp (FI), so they'll handle 650hp without blinking. Rods are easy enough to upgrade, if you feel the need. L92 heads are under $1k and flow 360cfm-plus on the intake with a mild valve job. Add a cam, trunion upgrade, and you're pretty much there...and, more importantly, it'll have great street manners and LAST. But, to each his own I guess.
dude you cant get 650 horse out of a naturally asperaited small block you need forced induction to hit the 650 mark in a stroked SBC. "that engine your messing with barely hits 400 HP im willing to bet on that!" ive built 3 383s and only one hit the 500hp mark and it needed a huge 225cc runner and a kick butt ignitiion system to do that. so, "stop telling these guys lies and learn how to build em right"
@BigChevyFTW Actually your wrong, dirt track cars are naturally asperaited and the open wheel class runs on alcohol and make 700hp all the time. Most guys run a SBC. It takes a pot full of money to do it, but it can be done. However, these guys didn't do it with that Engine!

Used to build 425hp 2bbl 350's for local street stock circle track guys....very limited by rules. Unported iron heads, nothing crazy on the flat tappet cam and flat top pistons. That's about 1.2hp/cubic inch. Bumping up to about 1.5hp/ci on a 383 gives you about 575hp. With the right compression, well ported alum. heads, and cam to match - 650hp is feasible. I'm not saying the engine in this video makes exactly that, but it shouldn't be too far off.

@ismoketobacco I had personal experience with these crooks myself. I needed a replacement motor for my son's Land Rover. EATW advertised one as a clean low mile documented (43K) used motor fully tested and ready to install. What they shipped was a junk motor, full of solidified sludge, that had also been submerged in water and severely rusted internally. At the very least the motor would required a complete rebuild to function properly. Too late for me now; If I had only done a little research.

A small engine making 650 hp means high revs. At idle it's so rough it barely turns, let alone move the car. So a faster idle helps take-off, but doesn't mix very well with torque converters. Also, since we need to keep this small engine in the highs to perform, we need more gears.
Hence, an engine like this needs a manual. Yet shift points lack the constant surge of an automatic. So what's the benefit from small block over big torquey ones?
@Nomasain automatics for drag racing have a stall in the torque converter to get the revs higher. a higher gear (4.10, 3.73) in the differencial will bring the car to higher revs too, giving also more torque because of the bigger gear. Small blocks are snappy engines, lots of instant torque(modified ones), big blocks will achieve higher speeds on a 1/4 mile race( more MPH).

u could raise the price on that by putting double camel hump heads on it, and switch the intake to an edelbrock intake, dual flowmasters, and a flex fan

the motor sounds like it is making some decent power but i doubt 650, to make a NA 383 hit 650hp you will have to turn it every bit of 7500rpm, the cam will have to be in the 270° at 050 range, compression in the 13:1 range. and as mentioned- a 383 making 650hp on a vac secondary carb is not likely, they make them upwards of 850-870cfm which would be the minimum for a 650hp SBC but even they still only have a single accelerator pump in them

@vintagedreamcars: I do own a big block. :) I'll say though, small blocks are cheaper to build and can rev higher. With a big block though, you can't rev them up high and dump the clutch, cause if you've got one built right, somethings going to break. Big blocks are torque monsters, I love 'em!

@thunderup86 the only manifold edelbrock sells that is better than the victor jr is the super victor and it doesnt cost much more.my victor jr is plenum ported and completely worked and runs just as good as a super victor,the super victor is just a touch taller and has a straighter path to the intake port.you also said something about a bigger sprag,it cant be bigger,it can be heavy duty.im nit-picking but it is what it is there are other things that i would point out but my word count is at 0

Well it is a good looking engine sounds good, but JUST going on this video it is doomed to fail unless somethings were changed.
1. Notice that the valve covers do not have breathers, therefor the engine cannot breathe and will either blow a gasket or a ring. I am just going on what i can see in the video, hopefully they were intelligent enough to change valve covers.
2. IF this was its first time running it was not broken in properly. If you didn't wear a camlobe off you were damn lucky.
The engine should've been run over 1500 RPM's for at least 20-30 minutes before idling.
I am just going off what is said and showed in the video. The thing is that just these 2 problems makes me wonder if it was just slapped together from a book or professionaly built. Thats why I only trust engines that I build, been building them for 25 years and NEVER had one fail.
its makes no diference were the vacum advance is,just having one & a vacum secondary carb. tells me there lost. it mite make 700hp after they add 300hp nos
I thought the most you could get out of a 383 stroker is like 500hp....but 700hp! thats something else! haha...what is needed to make this kind of power?
@nikidizzi2 700hp is a common rating for 383 strokers, if you go online and buy a stroker kit, 700hp rated is one of the optoins, lots of people are pulling 700 + out of these small blocks, thats why they are so popular, light wieght and fairly easy and cheap to make a power house.
@nikidizzi2 IF and thats a big IF you can get a big block and parts for it fairly cheap, they can be hard to find and expnsive to rebuild, all depends on your resources. Also what are you looking to do with your car ? drag race ? or just mess around. the benifits of building a small block up areits lightwieght, so if you can lay the same hp and torque as a big block you get better times cus of the wieght difference, also gas consumtion wil be lower, but of course having a big 454 is always cool.

And wieght always effects a car but how much of ityou will notice depends on the car and its suspensoin set-up, as for the gas consumpton, I suppose its possible a 383 could burn more, but more likely its one with some pretty high output set-ups designed to feed the engine allot of fuel.

@nikidizzi2 No problem. As for ur consern, it all depends on a few factors, A: can you get a 454 block for a good price ? B: how much do you want to do yourself ? building a 383 stroker with 700 + HP does require allot of work and time, and when I say cheap, I mean cheap for a home built 700hp block as apose to making another small block from say ford or dodge to 700hp. Buying a big block is cheaper if you want big horse power quick without doing much modding, continue next post.
I agree, the timing is retarded. If he would have crank it and left the card alone, and advanced the timing he would have got a good idle. Big Cam, definetely a solid roller with all that thumpin going on.
I may be way off here but typically the vacum advance on the distributor would be facing closer to passenger side valve cover , maybe a ton of timing in this thing , ( could be with a big cam i suppose ) sorry if my comments seem stupid, just food for thought

@weldergrodd.... all carbs work off vacume dipshit. the back barrels of a vac secondary respond to vacume depending upon throttle position of the front barrels. gives the carb more streetable behavior and better fuel economy. not intended for high hp applications period. you dont even have a vac. secondary carb so dont pretend like you know about em. whats that old s10 of yours run anyway?low 12's, high 11's at best?

Well engine sounds radical only because the Choke is more then half closed, i used to have a stock engine with a holley on it and close it more then half way and would sound bad ass with it, curious what that engine really sounds like with the choke completely off, dont know why he is even tryin to adjust the idle air screws with the choke damn near closed..

@ACHEESEDANISH00 If it's a flat tappet cam you are likely to trash cam and lifters with a slow idle on first start up.. Idealy 2 to 2.5 grand for 30 min to break a flat tappet in , a slow idle isn't doing the rings any good either , you need to get a load on them forceing them against the cylinder walls to get them to seat.. A dyno or vehicle with a few moderately hard runs before the cylinder walls start to glaze usually does the trick..

I like the worlds cheapest tach on the stand and the fact that when the guy adjusts the idle mixture UPSIDE DOWN the RPMs DROP instead of going UP! LMAO! Oh well, if you believe this engine is making 650 hp you can do whatever you want.
By the way, ALL engines have "cams" in them and they don't necessarily ADD lots of hp, the cam(shaft) tells you where you will make hp, low, mid or high end.

I don't understand why people still build these old gen1 Chevys. They were great "back in the day", but are mostly a waste of money now. I'll take a newer lq4 with l76 heads and l92 intake, along with a somewhat mild cam....and make just as much REAL power as these buys are claiming. Even in old-school cars, the LSX is where it's at for reliable power.

@salemetro because you can still build a gen 1 Chevy thats a beast for little cost compared to later models. Not everyone has $10,000 to dump into an engine build. If you know what you're doing you can build this type of engine for less than $3,000. I f i had the money, I'd go LS, but since I dont, I'll stick with building what people sell on craigslist for $150. Hell, sometimes they give them away. lol

@jhamilton07 650hp out of an LSX costs nowhere near $10k...try $3500-$5000 if you know what you're doing. The stock cranks have been proven to over 1000hp (FI), so they'll handle 650hp without blinking. Rods are easy enough to upgrade, if you feel the need. L92 heads are under $1k and flow 360cfm-plus on the intake with a mild valve job. Add a cam, trunion upgrade, and you're pretty much there...and, more importantly, it'll have great street manners and LAST. But, to each his own I guess.

Used to build 425hp 2bbl 350's for local street stock circle track guys....very limited by rules. Unported iron heads, nothing crazy on the flat tappet cam and flat top pistons. That's about 1.2hp/cubic inch. Bumping up to about 1.5hp/ci on a 383 gives you about 575hp. With the right compression, well ported alum. heads, and cam to match - 650hp is feasible. I'm not saying the engine in this video makes exactly that, but it shouldn't be too far off.

@ismoketobacco I had personal experience with these crooks myself. I needed a replacement motor for my son's Land Rover. EATW advertised one as a clean low mile documented (43K) used motor fully tested and ready to install. What they shipped was a junk motor, full of solidified sludge, that had also been submerged in water and severely rusted internally. At the very least the motor would required a complete rebuild to function properly. Too late for me now; If I had only done a little research.

Trying to learn here:
A small engine making 650 hp means high revs. At idle it's so rough it barely turns, let alone move the car. So a faster idle helps take-off, but doesn't mix very well with torque converters. Also, since we need to keep this small engine in the highs to perform, we need more gears.
Hence, an engine like this needs a manual. Yet shift points lack the constant surge of an automatic. So what's the benefit from small block over big torquey ones?

@Nomasain automatics for drag racing have a stall in the torque converter to get the revs higher. a higher gear (4.10, 3.73) in the differencial will bring the car to higher revs too, giving also more torque because of the bigger gear. Small blocks are snappy engines, lots of instant torque(modified ones), big blocks will achieve higher speeds on a 1/4 mile race( more MPH).

the motor sounds like it is making some decent power but i doubt 650, to make a NA 383 hit 650hp you will have to turn it every bit of 7500rpm, the cam will have to be in the 270° at 050 range, compression in the 13:1 range. and as mentioned- a 383 making 650hp on a vac secondary carb is not likely, they make them upwards of 850-870cfm which would be the minimum for a 650hp SBC but even they still only have a single accelerator pump in them

@thunderup86 the only manifold edelbrock sells that is better than the victor jr is the super victor and it doesnt cost much more.my victor jr is plenum ported and completely worked and runs just as good as a super victor,the super victor is just a touch taller and has a straighter path to the intake port.you also said something about a bigger sprag,it cant be bigger,it can be heavy duty.im nit-picking but it is what it is there are other things that i would point out but my word count is at 0

Well it is a good looking engine sounds good, but JUST going on this video it is doomed to fail unless somethings were changed.
1. Notice that the valve covers do not have breathers, therefor the engine cannot breathe and will either blow a gasket or a ring. I am just going on what i can see in the video, hopefully they were intelligent enough to change valve covers.
2. IF this was its first time running it was not broken in properly. If you didn't wear a camlobe off you were damn lucky.

The engine should've been run over 1500 RPM's for at least 20-30 minutes before idling.
I am just going off what is said and showed in the video. The thing is that just these 2 problems makes me wonder if it was just slapped together from a book or professionaly built. Thats why I only trust engines that I build, been building them for 25 years and NEVER had one fail.

@nikidizzi2 700hp is a common rating for 383 strokers, if you go online and buy a stroker kit, 700hp rated is one of the optoins, lots of people are pulling 700 + out of these small blocks, thats why they are so popular, light wieght and fairly easy and cheap to make a power house.

@nikidizzi2 IF and thats a big IF you can get a big block and parts for it fairly cheap, they can be hard to find and expnsive to rebuild, all depends on your resources. Also what are you looking to do with your car ? drag race ? or just mess around. the benifits of building a small block up areits lightwieght, so if you can lay the same hp and torque as a big block you get better times cus of the wieght difference, also gas consumtion wil be lower, but of course having a big 454 is always cool.

@SpeedFreak8900 I don't think I'll be taking the car to the strip..just something I could use as a daily driver and all around fun car to just drive in haha..my first choice was actually the 383(hopefully home built) but I heard that it consumes gas more than the 454 which didn't actually sound right lol..so the benefits of building a 383 is basically having a lighter ride?..and from what you're trying to say is that in a way, it's EASIER to build a 454 than a 383?

@SpeedFreak8900 Depends how you want to go I suppose, if you by a 383 and do it up thats cheaper and easier toget parts for, bu if you are planning to bore a 350 to a 383 yourself, well thats clarly more work. And wieght always effects a car but how much of ityou will notice depends on the car and its suspensoin set-up, as for the gas consumpton, I suppose its possible a 383 could burn more, but more likely its one with some pretty high output set-ups designed to feed the engine allot of fuel.

@nikidizzi2 No problem. As for ur consern, it all depends on a few factors, A: can you get a 454 block for a good price ? B: how much do you want to do yourself ? building a 383 stroker with 700 + HP does require allot of work and time, and when I say cheap, I mean cheap for a home built 700hp block as apose to making another small block from say ford or dodge to 700hp. Buying a big block is cheaper if you want big horse power quick without doing much modding, continue next post.

I may be way off here but typically the vacum advance on the distributor would be facing closer to passenger side valve cover , maybe a ton of timing in this thing , ( could be with a big cam i suppose ) sorry if my comments seem stupid, just food for thought

The secondaries being vac or mech. on the carb will not change the fukn horsepower, at WOT a fukn 750cfm or etc. will be just that, and no I dont run vac sec. on a race motor, I want them to open as soon as I mat the damn thing, if I was building a street motor then vac would be an option. My 358 runs on 91 octane fuel all day long... DUMBASS

@weldergrodd.... all carbs work off vacume dipshit. the back barrels of a vac secondary respond to vacume depending upon throttle position of the front barrels. gives the carb more streetable behavior and better fuel economy. not intended for high hp applications period. you dont even have a vac. secondary carb so dont pretend like you know about em. whats that old s10 of yours run anyway?low 12's, high 11's at best?

@bigtigger I know how a fukn carb works meat stick, I've been building fukn drag and street cars while you were living at home with mommy and daddy a, 406, 430, 454 SMALLBLOCKS tunnel rammed,with 1200cfm carbs on them. a 572 chevy BB with 6-71 supercharger Merlin Heads and Block ALL aluminum. in a 1985 chevy Short bed. tubbed with a cage..AND I BUILD EVERYTHING MYSELF It ran 8.87 1/4 mile @ 198mph.@ memphis motorsports park before it shut down. do some homework before you try and sound smart
