I work at my familys farm. im 15 and my mom and dad were away and i saw a sow giving birth in gestation. It was much more bloodier than this video. The sow was very relaxed. 2 died out of 12 (already dead when out) so 10. One would of died because it's leg were stuck were the poop and pee goes but saved him. I picked them all up and put them into a buggy were they got dried up from feed grains. This was my first time seeing this and holding them. I was very proud. They were also very slimey.
Awesome! Those pigs would not have survived without your seeing them. When they start to farrow in gestation the piglets tend to stray away from the mother sow and can get hurt from other sows and not get the milk that they need to get within the first hours of their life. We have seen this, but try very hard to avoid it.
So be proud, you are who saved those pigs... and yes there can be a lot of blood, and they are very slimy when born. :-)
@1979rrhemery Thanks, And yes. All the other sow could've killed the piglets. We transfered the sow to farrowing right away !! I was so happy seeing them little piglets.
@brandonlamchops They never seem to be all that loud... we have been told by vets and visitors to the barn that our sows are very relaxed and quiet. The room that this was taken in, is a room of 12 farrowing sows. since this video was posted we installed light switches so that the lights can be manually turned off when they are farrowing. It has made a huge difference and helps the sow relax a lot more if we are needing to come into the room when they are farrowing... Thank you for your post :-)
I think it is a wonderful sight to see an animal give birth... yes it is a 'miracle of life'!! Thank you for your comment I am always happy to hear from anyone, even though some of our views are different, I still welcome there thought. The farm I work at has the farrowing crates (as the video shows) I would love to see how the farms are ran with open crates, I think it would be awesome to see the piggy's running around. Thank you again for your comment
