People show videos of their dogs flipping out after not seeing them for years. I get that EVERY time my hound sees me. I've never seen a dog that is as happy to see their owner as a Basset Hound. Going to Home Depot is fun as hell. EVERYONE wants to see the hound.No dog gets as much attention as Basset. They shed nonstop so if you get one beware!

Neither of my bassets drool... much. I've had 4 bassets (2 at a time) and I'm 16. One of the few dogs I'm NOT allergic to! I love them so much! One of them is young, but we think he could be a therapy dog. He loves everything and everyone!
The other is scared of everything... but he's gotten better having a brother.

Why is everyone here calling Basset's fat and lazy? I don't plan on getting one, but I've known two Basset's and both were in great shape, full of energy, loved rabbit hunting and were definitely not "Fat and lazy". I even took one of them hiking with me and he didn't even think about stopping, he also carried my water bottle in a pouch on his back :)
Bassett are great dogs. They are very good with small children. The ears are just adorible!! They do not like snow either. I love my basset and if you want one you need to be up to a lot of training and some laziness :)

@piggybankvillan Good luck! Bassets are awesome, but they take a lot of work and a lot of patience. Don't get discouraged when (not if) your new dog pees on the carpet.

i have a basset, and, well, he is in some trouble. He has a lump in his back and he has been acting weird. i don't know for sure whats wrong, but it might be cancer. we drew some blood and are running some tests on it. please, oh please keep our dear Lazlo in you prairs. thank you

@Tobriep81 i am so sorry to tell you this, but he has died. a few months ago, his lymphoma had taken to much from him. His had fluid in them, making it hard for him to breath. He was suffering. we decided it was time to let him go. he lived a great 9 years of life, and i will never forget him. thank you for your support. (also he was a pure bread, making his lifespan a bit shorter.
used to have one named mitch. she was so cute, but very stubborn and they howl when left alone. we traded her for a labrador because the howling was just too much for my dad. turns out the labrador was worse, wrecking everything in sight.
@philsense yes great dog just give him areas to run some times when i lived in an apartment i used to take my bassit to the park and let him run around but he has joint troubles now so i cant do that anymore
@philsense I would say yes. I've adopted 4 and compared to other breeds I've owned, when settled down as adults, they're mellow dogs. (More rambunctious as puppies.) They're really cuddly and like to be close to you. Mine are spoiled lap dogs. I have them trained on heeling on leash, recall and ringing bells to go outside. Be firm and calm w/ training, use treats. I live inner city in an apartment; we walk a lot. Don't let them get fat. They have oily coats; washing every week or 2 is needed.
the Bassets are a really funny dogs,even when they are not trying be funny. Maybe it's the way the way they sit or how their droopy eyes will look at you and you hug them immediately or the way they walk I don't know XD but they are just an amazing breed of dog to have. Lazy yes they do that and when you get mad they'll come to you and lick your feet or whatever and let's you understand. My basset is such a sweet dog. She is my pal :) So if you are looking for a dog breed choose the Bassets :)

Our family's first basset was a bit of a coward XD. My parents tell me this story of them at a relatives house with a pond. Some big dog came over the hill and our basset dived in the water and swam to the other side. Surprising considering their water difficulties. I always thought their oily coat helped them in water environments, though.
@ratkic86 dunno just hated me and my friends and loved my sister and mom to the point that if we came down the hall when he was in her room with her hed run out of the room chase and attack me then just walk back in the room or hed sit on me and want me to pet him and hed bite and snap if i tried to move him or get up.
No dog is stupid it depends on how they are trained. Scent hounds are stubborn dogs and require more patience in training, if you don't have the patience, hounds are the wrong breed for you. They are far from being stupid.
@donuttheclown thats not true at all our basset is very smart, they're stubborn because they're smart enough to know that even if they disobey you will still love them anyways, plus if you work hard enough you can train them.
lol my uncle used to have a saint bernard and a basset hound. they both are still alive but he had to give away the saint bernard because he got a divorce
I absoloutely adore my Basset, Rufus. Allthough he is not a purebred, she still has that long body, big eyes, and reletively droopy ears. He loves to run and hunt down the bunnies and gophers in our backyard. I agree with this video 95% only becuase I find that my dog is highly responsive to training and willing to do whatever command he is told. Heh, must be the Australian Sheppard in him. :)
My dog, Dilbert, is also a Basset Hound, and Australian Sheppard mix! Lovable aren't they? He also has those round eyes, but longer legs and a slightly less elongated body (though still long), and droopy ears, but smaller so they don't get as dirty. I agree my dog is also responsive to training, though he is also stubborn and while can do the trick he may not want to right away if food is involved. I find that the Australian Sheppard half helps lessen some of those health problems.

They also like to go discovering.............my dog used to go adventuring in the canyon right in front of my house and used to think it was a game. They are curl up in crioussants when they go to sleep.

@ratkic86 dunno just hated me and my friends and loved my sister and mom to the point that if we came down the hall when he was in her room with her hed run out of the room chase and attack me then just walk back in the room or hed sit on me and want me to pet him and hed bite and snap if i tried to move him or get up.

No dog is stupid it depends on how they are trained. Scent hounds are stubborn dogs and require more patience in training, if you don't have the patience, hounds are the wrong breed for you. They are far from being stupid.

@donuttheclown thats not true at all our basset is very smart, they're stubborn because they're smart enough to know that even if they disobey you will still love them anyways, plus if you work hard enough you can train them.

I absoloutely adore my Basset, Rufus. Allthough he is not a purebred, she still has that long body, big eyes, and reletively droopy ears. He loves to run and hunt down the bunnies and gophers in our backyard. I agree with this video 95% only becuase I find that my dog is highly responsive to training and willing to do whatever command he is told. Heh, must be the Australian Sheppard in him. :)

My dog, Dilbert, is also a Basset Hound, and Australian Sheppard mix! Lovable aren't they? He also has those round eyes, but longer legs and a slightly less elongated body (though still long), and droopy ears, but smaller so they don't get as dirty. I agree my dog is also responsive to training, though he is also stubborn and while can do the trick he may not want to right away if food is involved. I find that the Australian Sheppard half helps lessen some of those health problems.

what ever they eat they stick their whole head in it. My old basset hound's forehead would smell like whatever she ate. They also like to go discovering.............my dog used to go adventuring in the canyon right in front of my house and used to think it was a game. They are curl up in crioussants when they go to sleep.
