Thanks for posting this interesting interview to late great Ben Orr promoting his single as a solo performer. by the way the interviewer is a very young Mark Goodman from original MTV staff.
Fuck Ric, the band would have been just fine without him..Just goes to show theres always a whiny ass punk in every band..well we can see where his career went after leaving the band, in the toilet..He could only wish to be as talented as Ben, or sing as good...
Yes, it is very sad... :-( For the longest time I was told by many people in the 80's / 90's that I bore a resemblance to Ben Orr. I played drums in a band around Sydney, Australia, and we were always asked to play Cars covers... It just wasn't the same to have a drummer sing "Drive" among other tunes. Anyway, I shall miss him, and yes, he was a very humble muso !! Shine On, Ben... You shall never be forgotten... Cheers, buddy...

Benjamin ..When I think Of the Cars..I think of you. You had so much more music left in you.. Even in 2011 you can still make me cry. Thank you for what you gave us. You will always be missed.. RIP
So he starts dating this girl, then shortly after leaves the Cars. Then puts out an album with her co-writing every song. I would put money on her being the driving force to get him to leave the band; I hope she was worth it.
@number1sun Hey it was Ric Ocasek who called off the whole thing with the CARS. After the tour in 1987 Door to Door he had this interview with someone on a radio. After only talking to Elliot Easton alone. He said to the radio host" I might as well tell ya , Im leaving the band." So Ben Orr and the rest of the CARS were stranded with the fact of like so what do we do now? They could ve just toured with Ben Orr but with no rythm guitarist. I dont know
Oh thank you for such a lovely interview with such a beautiful incredible man. Alot of people are commenting on Benjamin looking uncomfortable or annoyed. The truth from what I've read is that Benjamin was a very shy guy actually. He was quiet and if you notice he normally doesn't talk much in interviews if others are around. I think he just wanted to perform but didn't really want to be shoved right in the limelight.
watch The Cars video "You are the Girl" and you will see something very strange.... The girl on the monitor at the beginning holds up a calendar saying APRIL 2000. Which happens to be the month that Ben was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Very odd but true.
Thank you so much for posting these. I was too young to appreciate Ben back then, but when I heard "Stay the Night" again, after all these years, it really touched me. He was a beautiful man with a beautiful voice & great talent. May his soul be eternal as his music.
I'm sorry but while I love the album cover, "Stay The Night" and "When You're Gone", I hated seeing him look like a tanned and oiled hair-metal David Lee Roth. I always thought it was beneath him and that he was only going with what was "hot" at that time. I shall choose to remember Benny-O with Ric and the Cars before they broke up. But that's just me. You can all do what you want. You always tend to remember the dearly departed the way you want to.
i was fortunate to have met Ben and his family in Vermont, USA. have pictures to prove it. but his niece was driving him crazy that day at the ballon festival. kids will make you and break you. Ben is a family guy and down to earth. I miss his beautiful voice..."shit i'm starting to sound gay". but am gay i'm straight!
I am sad that he passed away. I met Ben at an 80's flashback concert in 1999 and he was extremely nice. He passed on a year later and I felt so bad. I will never forget that show when he was fronting the Cars. He wore a black trench coat and sunglasses.
Good old ethnic kid from Parma, Ohio. A good guy: you can hear it in his voice. Just a rocker from Cleveland who just wanted to be in a band. So sad about his passing....and so unfair.
Thanks so much for posting this! We didn't have cable way back then, so I missed all these cool spots. Ben was and always will be my favorite singer/'rock star'. Coolest voice and persona. I still mourn his death to this day. It kills me that we didn't see more of him/The Cars. They were good for at least 3-5 more albums. It's a shame that personalities got in the way. I always thought he should have sung at least half of The Cars songs if not more! RIP Ben! Your legacy lives on!
I couldn't agree with you more there. I wish there had been more albums and tours. I also wish he had sung lead on more tunes. Can't get enough of this guy!!
I am reminded after hearing this fine song; Benjamin had such heartfelt phrasing and interpretation. He was on a role....Drive...Stay the Night. I had this album and unfortunately lost the LP. Thanks for posting.....
Its almost erie how Ben just sits there, and you can make out eyes and a face in the top left corner slowly fadin away. Truly one of the most unique performers of his time. Gone to soon, yet will always lead a legacy unmatched by most.
One of my favorite Rock Stars when I was growing up was Benjamin Orr...I loved his voice ,his vibe and he looked so cool...and to see this interview proves my feelings of how cool he was...very humble and kind...look at that hair...the threads...listen, I'm a songwriter myself and normally don't get soooo caught up with image...of course the music comes 1st but Ben was exceptionally cool...God Bless ya Ben!...thank you for the music.
Oh, yes! His real name is Orzechowski. It sounds so Polish. Maybe some part of his family comes from Poland. I would be great...I`m from Slovakia which is the southern neighbour of Poland. lol
Russian and "Czechoslovak", if I am not mistaken. Whether Czech or Slovak, I don't know. On the other hand, it could also be Moravian if you want to get technical. ;-)

So sad that such talent is taken away oh too soon...while criminals are allowed to live! You were so loved in life and so missed now that you are gone! R.I.P. dear sweet Ben!
wow... three cheers for our hero Ben orr. Thanks for posting this. It is a great video, especially the part where the guy insults his girlfriend and you think he took a hit, but then he just lets a few seconds go by (while the other guy is probably laughing) transfixes his eyes right at him and says "she is very talented". Sock it em ben. You're the inspiration
Not counting the fact that Mark Goodman is in it (ugh!), this video was a real pickup to see, especially after having just watched that "last interview" from the Cars Live DVD elsewhere. Thanks.
Dear YouTube friends: Mr. Orr was a genius. Unfortunately, God only knows why people come and go. I will never agree with God's design. I am not a catholic. I believe some alien (God's envoy) made earth and men. It seems for God life has no meaning. Some are born, some die,so easily,so sadly. Ok, let's forget it!
Yes, Goodman is a DB, but all that matters is we get to see Benjamin when he was in his prime. I have been in major mourning, for about two weeks now. I don't know how I missed Ben's passing. The Car's and Ben, were my youth.
I loved Benjamin and the Cars. No matter what the DB's at MTV said.
I can definitely say "sex all night long." That's for sure. He was truly one of a kind. It's nice to see video footage of his personality. Very sweet, very handsome, and incredibly sexy. But it's that voice...so much talent. And it just seemed to get better with age. Love and miss you Benjamin.
Oh, and I, too, forgot what a douche Mark Goodman was. Is it me, or is Ben literally itching to get the hell out of there?
