  • Thanks for posting this interesting interview to late great Ben Orr promoting his single as a solo performer. by the way the interviewer is a very young Mark Goodman from original MTV staff.

  • ben me parece que hoy te echaron el ojo judith

  • Fuck Ric, the band would have been just fine without him..Just goes to show theres always a whiny ass punk in every band..well we can see where his career went after leaving the band, in the toilet..He could only wish to be as talented as Ben, or sing as good...

  • There must be nothing like being a pop star in the 80's.

  • Yes, it is very sad... :-( For the longest time I was told by many people in the 80's / 90's that I bore a resemblance to Ben Orr. I played drums in a band around Sydney, Australia, and we were always asked to play Cars covers... It just wasn't the same to have a drummer sing "Drive" among other tunes. Anyway, I shall miss him, and yes, he was a very humble muso !! Shine On, Ben... You shall never be forgotten... Cheers, buddy...

  • EXELENT INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Benjamin Orr el mùsico que marco mi vida de adolescente. Hoy 11/1/2012 ,sigo agradecièndole por habernos instruìdo con su sabidurìa musical y canto ,ùnico! Tambien siempre lo imito, cantando "Drive"," y " Is not the one",tambièn lo lloro muy seguido extrañandolo. Lo llegue a ver en Boston en 1979 .Hasta mis ùltimos dàs lo escucharè.Desde ARGENTINA AMAMOS A THE CARS!!!!!!

  • RIP Ben

  • Ah, memories, back when Mark Goodman was perming his poodle hair.

  • Lol I love the way Ben Orr explains himself. Any girl would have been lucky to have him. He reminds me of myself.

  • rip

  • Benjamin ..When I think Of the Cars..I think of you. You had so much more music left in you.. Even in 2011 you can still make me cry. Thank you for what you gave us. You will always be missed.. RIP

  • So he starts dating this girl, then shortly after leaves the Cars. Then puts out an album with her co-writing every song. I would put money on her being the driving force to get him to leave the band; I hope she was worth it.

  • @number1sun yeah I know, that was one big mistake and after that Ric didn't want to go on either.

  • @number1sun Hey it was Ric Ocasek who called off the whole thing with the CARS. After the tour in 1987 Door to Door he had this interview with someone on a radio. After only talking to Elliot Easton alone. He said to the radio host" I might as well tell ya , Im leaving the band." So Ben Orr and the rest of the CARS were stranded with the fact of like so what do we do now? They could ve just toured with Ben Orr but with no rythm guitarist. I dont know

  • @number1sun You might want to watch the interview again. He had no intentions of leaving the band. It was Ocasic that left the band, not Benamine.

  • He was one hot man!

  • I remember that channel! It played music videos and had cool interviews like this with musicians....

  • Wow he was beautiful!

  • beat lookin rocker that ever lived!!

  • i think he was a huge drinker

  • yeah, best voice ever

  • Amazing how much his voice mimicked Ric's in sound and range..very subtle difference at most

  • Must of been exciting for him to have a special interview by MTV to promote his album.

  • I love you Benjamin.

  • Benjamin freaking Orr is my favorite Cars member. I've always imagined him to be sweet and kind-hearted. I'll bet he was. He seems to be. =]

  • @XchocoboXchaserX agreed! =)

  • Miss you Benjamin! Today especially.....

  • I love him too!!he's a very handsome man and he's got a great voice!!

  • WOW I loved him...such a gorgeous guy and a brilliant talent....That smile at 8:26 takes my breath away....RIP "Benjamin don't call me Ben Orr"!!! <3

  • Oh thank you for such a lovely interview with such a beautiful incredible man. Alot of people are commenting on Benjamin looking uncomfortable or annoyed. The truth from what I've read is that Benjamin was a very shy guy actually. He was quiet and if you notice he normally doesn't talk much in interviews if others are around. I think he just wanted to perform but didn't really want to be shoved right in the limelight.

  • Goddamit Ben we miss you more than you could know!

  • Ben looks really uncomfortable being interviewed! But, OMG he was gorgeous!! RIP

  • watch The Cars video "You are the Girl" and you will see something very strange.... The girl on the monitor at the beginning holds up a calendar saying APRIL 2000. Which happens to be the month that Ben was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Very odd but true.

  • Happy birthday Benjamin......wherever you are!

  • Oh my sweet Ben, on this day so special, I think of you in particular. 8 September ,birthday of Ben Orr. Rest In Peace. I love you.

  • Ben was such a easy going mellow guy, a rare breed. The host was trying to trip him up with questions that were unnecessary, unbelievable.

  • At least The Cars are alive and well and paid Ben tribute on their new album "Move Like This"

  • benjamin orr is so sexy from the cars

  • THANK YOU BEN!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

  • This was excellent! Thank you for posting this GREAT footage of Ben.

  • Thanks thanks thanks !!! Ben was the best . RIP

  • exelent !!!--- the cars-- y --! benjamin orr--- el mùsico que marco mi vida .- desde Argentina .- eduxr2@yahoo.com.ar

  • what a sweet, humble, talented guy, RIP.

  • 8:26 holy crap!

  • Thank you so much for posting these. I was too young to appreciate Ben back then, but when I heard "Stay the Night" again, after all these years, it really touched me. He was a beautiful man with a beautiful voice & great talent. May his soul be eternal as his music.

  • Mark Goodman as always is a moron !!!

  • Woooow !!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Ben was gorgeous !!!!!! ♥♥♥ I love you Ben ♥♥♥

  • Goodman comes off as a complete dick in this clip. To Ben's credit he puts up with it, and remains his same humble self.

  • Ben is cool ...... Mark ? .. what a dork !

  • soooo hoottttt!!!!!!!!!!

  • Orr was such an underestimated talent and singer. I love this guy and appreciate his humility and quiet charm.

  • Ben must have been a very easy going person. Mark Goodman was a jerk. Who the hell cared how long it took?

  • Right! Sometimes he asked silly questions, for ex. about his (Ben`s) wife...."Is she in the kitchen?"...

  • I'm sorry but while I love the album cover, "Stay The Night" and "When You're Gone", I hated seeing him look like a tanned and oiled hair-metal David Lee Roth. I always thought it was beneath him and that he was only going with what was "hot" at that time. I shall choose to remember Benny-O with Ric and the Cars before they broke up. But that's just me. You can all do what you want. You always tend to remember the dearly departed the way you want to.

  • why does mark goodman come off as such a weasel ? Or is it just me.....

  • I agree. goodman seemed kind of like a jerk. I don't feel that he was the right interviewer for Benjamin

  • i was fortunate to have met Ben and his family in Vermont, USA. have pictures to prove it. but his niece was driving him crazy that day at the ballon festival. kids will make you and break you. Ben is a family guy and down to earth. I miss his beautiful voice..."shit i'm starting to sound gay". but am gay i'm straight!

  • Great. Thanks a million for posting this. Ben was one of the best!

  • Wow I can't stop loving YouTube for making us possible to see these rare interviews... and obviously thanks to you for posting this!

Benjamin Orr is such a great singer, and I really loved The Lace, I wish I could hear more from him...

  • What a beautiful man... He is missed, and the music world is so sad without him...Talent,Talent, Talent...

  • I am sad that he passed away. I met Ben at an 80's flashback concert in 1999 and he was extremely nice. He passed on a year later and I felt so bad. I will never forget that show when he was fronting the Cars. He wore a black trench coat and sunglasses.

  • Good old ethnic kid from Parma, Ohio. A good guy: you can hear it in his voice. Just a rocker from Cleveland who just wanted to be in a band. So sad about his passing....and so unfair.

  • I didn't know he didn't like to be called Ben. I thought everyone called him that.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! We didn't have cable way back then, so I missed all these cool spots. Ben was and always will be my favorite singer/'rock star'. Coolest voice and persona. I still mourn his death to this day. It kills me that we didn't see more of him/The Cars. They were good for at least 3-5 more albums. It's a shame that personalities got in the way. I always thought he should have sung at least half of The Cars songs if not more! RIP Ben! Your legacy lives on!

  • I couldn't agree with you more there. I wish there had been more albums and tours. I also wish he had sung lead on more tunes. Can't get enough of this guy!!

I still miss him like crazy too!

  • I am reminded after hearing this fine song; Benjamin had such heartfelt phrasing and interpretation. He was on a role....Drive...Stay the Night. I had this album and unfortunately lost the LP. Thanks for posting.....

  • Its almost erie how Ben just sits there, and you can make out eyes and a face in the top left corner slowly fadin away. Truly one of the most unique performers of his time. Gone to soon, yet will always lead a legacy unmatched by most.

  • he is the most handsome man I ever see!

  • One of my favorite Rock Stars when I was growing up was Benjamin Orr...I loved his voice ,his vibe and he looked so cool...and to see this interview proves my feelings of how cool he was...very humble and kind...look at that hair...the threads...listen, I'm a songwriter myself and normally don't get soooo caught up with image...of course the music comes 1st but Ben was exceptionally cool...God Bless ya Ben!...thank you for the music.

  • He looks european.

  • Oh, yes! His real name is Orzechowski. It sounds so Polish. Maybe some part of his family comes from Poland. I would be great...I`m from Slovakia which is the southern neighbour of Poland. lol

  • Russian and "Czechoslovak", if I am not mistaken. Whether Czech or Slovak, I don't know. On the other hand, it could also be Moravian if you want to get technical. ;-)

    Ahoj!

  • Yes, I read it somewhere (his biography or something).Born in 1947, although they (websites) always mention different years of his birth.BTW:My father is Moravian...

    Vďaka za odpoveď. ;-)

  • neni' zac'

  • hi aludar...i did a search of my family. my grandmother's family is Moravian, From Römerstadt. Last name Frank. Many Moravian people came to the US & settled in Chicago, NC & Penn areas.

  • Great post, Thanks for the post. Wow this brings me back, R.I.P Benjiman Orr

  • Saw him in Tarentum PA the year B4 he died. Played rythm guitar instead of bass, looked very fit like he had been lifting, awesome show. Could not believe that he died

  • Seems like a very "controlled" sort, not to flamboyant, or eccentric. Just a down-to-earth kind of person. His "position" didn't go to his head.

  • @terrafirma91

I was going to say he seemed very down to earth.but you beat me too it

  • I can't believe he died. That is so tragic. His looks and voice were so haunting and unique. He was a romantically handsom man.

  • So sad that such talent is taken away oh too soon...while criminals are allowed to live! You were so loved in life and so missed now that you are gone! R.I.P. dear sweet Ben!

  • wishing you a happy birthday, Benjamin!

  • He was so hot.. I love him.. Rip Ben I love this song from him. I remember those mtv days.. But i am also a big fan of The cars.

  • If only there was...the 2nd album:(~miss this guy...

  • Benjamin Orr such a cool, layed back guy.Thanx for posting this vid it's great to see him interviewed.Long live Ben Orr!

  • wow... three cheers for our hero Ben orr. Thanks for posting this. It is a great video, especially the part where the guy insults his girlfriend and you think he took a hit, but then he just lets a few seconds go by (while the other guy is probably laughing) transfixes his eyes right at him and says "she is very talented". Sock it em ben. You're the inspiration

  • RIP Ben

  • Not counting the fact that Mark Goodman is in it (ugh!), this video was a real pickup to see, especially after having just watched that "last interview" from the Cars Live DVD elsewhere. Thanks.

  • He had an amazing eyes... He was so handsome... And talented, of course. Fantastic voice !

  • He seemed like he was a pretty cool, laid back guy. Dynamite song

  • Dear YouTube friends: Mr. Orr was a genius. Unfortunately, God only knows why people come and go. I will never agree with God's design. I am not a catholic. I believe some alien (God's envoy) made earth and men. It seems for God life has no meaning. Some are born, some die,so easily,so sadly. Ok, let's forget it!

(PEOPLE PLEASE STOP KILLING ANIMALS!STOP EATING MEAT!STOP WEARING FUR/LEATHER!thankyouAdemar)

  • Thanks for posting this! Very cool guy. Too bad what happend to him.

  • What a sweetheart he was. And that smile was something else.

  • Hey, thanks for posting that. There's so little of Ben out there. Glas his CD is in print again.

  • wow, he still takes my breath away... love you and miss you Benjamin!!!!

  • Yes, Goodman is a DB, but all that matters is we get to see Benjamin when he was in his prime. I have been in major mourning, for about two weeks now. I don't know how I missed Ben's passing. The Car's and Ben, were my youth.

I loved Benjamin and the Cars. No matter what the DB's at MTV said.

    Solaire

  • I can definitely say "sex all night long." That's for sure. He was truly one of a kind. It's nice to see video footage of his personality. Very sweet, very handsome, and incredibly sexy. But it's that voice...so much talent. And it just seemed to get better with age. Love and miss you Benjamin.

Oh, and I, too, forgot what a douche Mark Goodman was. Is it me, or is Ben literally itching to get the hell out of there?

  • He is the most gorgeous man ever! He is so sweet and humble in his interviews. It makes him even more adorable.

he will always be in our hearts.

  • I am totally agree with you! What a beautiful face he has ! He seems not to like the interviews, seems a bit nervous or impatient.

  • I forgot what a douche Mark Goodman was.

  • can you say "sex all night long?"

he is so sexy it's contagious XD

  • What are "beat patterns on dissolves"? Dissolves must be when a shot fades...?

  • he is so delicious XD

  • To this day, even though he is gone, he still takes my breath away.

  • @PDleeshus I couldn't agree more. <3

  • Holy Crap! Take off the eighties hair and he looks like Viggo Mortensen!

  • Benjamin was awesome! He had such a great personality and charisma about him. I think his parents were Czech and Russian? He will be greatly missed.

  • I shudder to think what that gorgeous smile got him during his life. :)

  • This was a pleasant surprise to see. Thanks

for giving us this. It is hard to think that

this interview was about 25 years ago! AGH!

Don't call me Ben certainly had IT. Looks,

  • Makes me miss him even more. Thank you for posting this. Rock on Benjamin.

  • Thank you for posting this Benny11Letters. I would also like to thank anyone who posts rare footage of Benjamin Orr. This interview reminds me of when MTV was actually good. Wish we could have MTV like this again. Now MTV is crap.

  • glad I had the day off when this was aired..I know what you mean,I haven't really watched mtv since they stopped playing Cars videos

  • Thanks for posting this interview Benny...I've never seen Ben Orr talking with so many details about his solo album THE LACE ! There is only a short interview with him and Diane here...it is really rare and a gift to all fans of Ben ! We miss him very much, for his beautiful voice and great talent...you know, STAY THE NIGHT is one of my favorites songs forever...a great inspiration of Ben Orr !

  • Mega thanks for sharing! Great interview.
