It think he was being sarcastic when he was talking about Nunchuku and his lame spinning stuff. You are right though, he is talking more about the functionality of the sai versus some flashy stupid movements (like holding the sai above the prongs)
I enjoy hand weapons purely for fun and fitness. Aside from an impressive display, being able to spin and flip the weapon/s enhances one's understanding of the weight and balance of them. Enabling full use of the weapons throughout the sphere of effective range. It won't hinder self defense.
Even if one is to hypothesize about being attacked by a random swordsman. A skilled display with sai would have to make a swordsman think twice.
I totally agree with you that the better the understanding of the weapon the better you can become. However, how many of these spinners are actually attempting to learn the whole package?
Most of them aren't interested in the origins of the weapons, only how to look good!

@kudaidude believe it or not Nunchakus are. Sai are not. Then again I train in Martial Arts and get my weapons via my dojo.
