I worked the boats in 1959 and it is great so see a video of Captain Ernie Ridd and yes, it is the Assiniboia. Captain Ridd was very tall, elegant and the epitome of a ship's Captain. Good but firm with crew.
!CoolJet. Soory here too. What you have is a compelation of both. The black and white is all Keewatin and most of the colour, (Honeymoon) is the Assianboia.
@Scarborobilly No need to be sorry. Caption on this video is clearly inaccurate. It's not "S.S. Keewatin honeymoon", it should read "S.S. Assiniboia honeymoon". Check out 40Dads2's comment above. By the way Capt. Rick, both the Keewatin & Assiniboia were coal burners originally. The Assiniboia was converted.
Hi Dayna07! I have to check my email messages more often. I just received your message of August 16th. How did you come into the possession of the gold pocket watch presented to the captain of the SS Assinboia on December 3rd 1936? Are you a relative of his? Was Captain James McCannell still the captain in 1936? Or had he retired by then? That is quite an historical watch, in my humble opinion.
Keewatin is so beautiful, i had no idea there was such a large old steamer left! Have you got any pictures of the enigne room? please help out im dying to see that engine :<!!
Assiniboia was the twin sister ship to Keewatin. Those cars have probably all gone to the breaker's yards but Keewatin is still around! July 6 2007 is the 100th anniversary of her christening!!
Keewatin going home to Port McNicoll, spring 2012!

This ship has been mis-identified as the S.S. Keewatin. It is actually the sister-ship of the Keewatin, the S.S. Assiniboia.

Try sailing the Great Lakes and you will get an idea of the hardships involved - something Prokiev and Mother Russia knew well enough of, I think?
