well first of i don't know much about houses and balls but this is what is called the ballroom scene/vogue for much of the black gay community. It bring together black gays who perform these dances of intricate moves which in away is telling a story. Mostly they compete against each other. Houses are like fraternities and most times people who vogue is a member of a house and so they adopt the name of that house as their last name to go with there first name these names are not real birthnames
The people of a house are like a family, they are to look out for and train each other. There's usually a house mother who is to look out for the newer family members. Some make sure their younger ones stay in school etc and there are some that don't really care much. Houses tend to compete against each other in balls. I'm a loner I never get involved in houses or the ballroom scene but I have picked up what i know from discussion groups etc.
