High RPM 1 wheel peel = spider gears exploding and shattering differential case. This is why you either get a car with enough power to keep both wheels burning or get an LSD.

@K31TH3R Power doesn't mean shit in making both wheels spin, resistance at the wheels effectively determines it. You can have 700whp, if you still have an open diff chances are you're still only going to spin 1 wheel. You need a locker or a LSD to spin both every time.

@mrZdude You can get both wheels spinning just fine if you load the differential up with the brakes while you're modulating throttle, but you need enough power to spin them or you'll just bog down and stall. If 1 Wheel starts spinning, jab the brakes hard a few times and most of the time the other wheel will light up, this works even better if the car has ABS. It's the poor mans LSD.

Im curious of what caused it to break like that. Was it from somthing he did like having the break down caused to much pressure or he dropped the clutch and it broke. Or maybe just to long of a burn out and to much stress on the parts? Im curious because sometimes I like to peel out hard by dropping the clutch but i never use my brakes to smoke it. I can do it real well if i reverse about 5-10 mph before i drop it into first but im worried of what damage that could cause to my car.

@dlock5050 When you peel out like that with only one wheel, the differential spider and side gears are forced to rotate very quickly since one wheel is stationary. In this case, it looks like it was either a lack of lubrication or just excessive wear that caused it to fail. The spider gears and pinion shaft overheated, came apart, and then it all came through the bottom of the trans. At the end theyre actually hot enough to set the gear oil on fire, which is pretty impressive.

@mysock351W He actually spun the spline on the left and as you say the left wheel stays still while the right side ,side gears take all the strain and because the pinion runs both sides it stripped ,jammed and by looks of it ,broke in half and spat the side gears out the bottom.The parts failed because of abuse no other reason.

@MrCriticOfAll Looked like the pinion shaft and spider gears where actually heated up to the point of almost glowing. They actually set the gear oil on fire, which meant they where HOT. Also looked like it was really low on gear oil. Although Ive done worse to open diffs and had no damage afterwards like this.

Definitely a diff failure. The trans-axle is not built to have only one wheel turning at a time that fast. Those spider gears are turning double the speed the tire is and most likely started fusing to the shaft. That is why that much heat was generated causing the oil to burn when the trans-axle failed.

@Kcducttaper1 It was no problem when both wheels were turning. The diff is not doing anything in that time. However, towards the end, you can see that only one wheel is turning. That means that the actual diff is working full blast, which it is not made for.

So, epic diff failure!
