My dog got hit by a car 2 weeks ago and had to have surgery on her ACL. I really want to know how your dog gets around now. Is your dog capable of running around like he/she used to? Or is there an obvious difference in how your dog gets moves? I have a rat terrier so weight shouldn't be that big of an issue.
@smacroc I kept my dog off of his leg for several weeks and gradually let him get back to using it. You should just keep your dog off of it for about 5 weeks (just to be safe) to make sure it heals properly. To me, my dog looks like it's getting back to using it like normal but, it depends on how long it took you to get the surgery on the leg, arthritis could have formed if you did wait before getting the surgery. And a lighter dog probably won't have as much of a problem my dog did weight wise.
@gdigger99 My best suggestions would be to just keep him/her off of it, and take it outside to do it's business on a leash to keep it from running. And, around the 4 week mark, do simple exercises, like moving each joint back and forth from the toes to the hip. Keep it from doing much work on the leg would just be the bottom line. And thanks for watching. And around the 6 week mark, would probably be the time where it should be completely healed.
@MammalRaiser Thanks for asking, and to answer your question, he is doing pretty well, when we aren't watching him, he has to wear that Elizabethan collar (The cone shape object they wear on their head, to prevent him from chewing on the stitches), and he does not enjoy that at all. But, planning on in a few days, taking my camera and filming him in our yard, when we walk out with him, as an update to this video. And thanks for watching.
