  • just because someones english doesnt mean they are xenophobic,if Ian was around he would be laughing at you right now. and that is from a mancunian

  • Whos singing?

  • It makes me laugh when Americans think they can in any way lay claim to Ian Curtis or Joy Division. No lads. You were everything he despised. The band was uniquely English and Northern English too. NO AMERICANS ALLOWED!

  • @GamesFrontiers You're a moron.

  • @GamesFrontiers I can say with absolute certitude that he wouldn't mind people putting words in his mouth after he died. Is there any solid evidence to this claim or are you simply trying to make your own beliefs seem valid by claiming Ian Curtis shared your views? Or you're just a troll trying to get a rise out of people, in which case, congrats.

  • Curtis was English to the core and would have hated anything American

  • odd video. great song. I am new fan since I got album played this every day for months now, anyone can point me in the direction of the best new order songs please do.... I currently only own 'Substance'.

  • @moonybeams Unknown Pleasures and Closer.

  • Oh my god

  • This song gives me chills.

  • brings a tear to the eye.. R.I.P Ian <3 xxx

  • This song made me a New Order fan for life when I first heard it...prefer the re-recorded (12" recorded in Sept. 1981?) version though.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is what introduced me to Joy Division, fan for life as well.

  • Most Beautiful.

  • I heard of them in 1984 when i as a young lad and fell in love with Ian's voice. from then til now i am finally getting to full fill my dream to pay respect to a great singer and song writer. I will be in maccelsfield soon! PRIMERO DIOS!!

  • Dowwnload the audio from this song at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • Ian Curtis was from Macclesfield. NOT Manchester

  • i can't listen to ANY joy division song w/o crying

  • @kittycatponce Well dont listen to them then.

  • Two idiots have no taste in music and poetry.

  • radiohead plays this song pretty good but not this perfect

  • There is no such thing as death

  • Perfect tempo for this song. The melody and that voice. Such majesty makes it hard to breathe. Ian, may you have found peace but, in its time, all that personal turbulence gave us some of the greatest music ever.

  • i saw the movie control and im only 32 so i remember them but mostly when they became new order and i fell in love with new order as a teen. still love both of them. so sad what happened to Ian. many cannot understand why he chose to leave us most importantly his friends and family but no one probably knows the hell he lived with. so easy for the living to judge the dead.he was in pain and i just wish someone couldve reached him more. just breaks my heart.im sure his wife did all she could.

  • @chadmight on his biography, it's says that his wife ask for divorce when he tried to make his second suicide soooo....

  • @LesterMacJ oh dang i didnt know that well i guess theres a lot to learn when someone dies.thats sad.thats when she shouldve stayed even more or at least divorce for cheating but remain supportive enough to where he knows u love him but u dont want him to die. i guess it was really hard for her the whole cheating thing but im sure she did love him and still does.at least i hope.

  • This song in particular, became a huge significance in my life..

I thank the young gentleman who introduced me to Joy Division.

    I was 14 when we met..now 18.

    For 3 years,

    This was Our song.

    And I'll never forget it.

  • so is this sang by ian or not

  • @Lone06 No, it's sang by Bernard Sumner.

  • @Lone06 yes its Ian

  • Man I've listened to this song 4 times here and another 4 times from my music player on my cell phone, maybe I'll play it one more time? Then another.

  • The "And on the Sixth day, God ..." part creeped me out for some reason. It is a VERY sad yet beautiful song.

  • @BryGuyShinigami : It's actually----"On the 6ixth day God created Manchester." And yes it is a sad yet beautiful song. And it has a special place in the deepest chamber of my heart.

  • GREAT.

The footage of the caff from 'last of the summer wine' at 14 seconds really adds to the fraught emotion of the song.

What next some 'Terry and June' clips with 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' as a backing track. I can hardly wait...

  • @oswego22 : Finally, somebody noticed the Last of the Summer Wine photo. Terry and June clip's a nice idea and I might get creative, perhaps.

  • @dementiakane it's a famous pub as it has been in both lancashire (Manc) and Yorkshire (feckin Housemartins oh dammit), Anyway - it's a top pint in north

  • Awesome

  • You are right. This is NEW ORDER's Ceremony slowed down. NOT JOY DIVISION. How lame! How fake! How stupid! The Beijing version by New Order is awesome ... should've let it play at normal speed and labelled it New Order.

  • @ everyone who answered me: I forgot to mention "studio recording". My fault.

  • Don't try and start a mass hysteria haters.

  • This needs to go on iTunes thank you very much for this. Keepvid is a website that lets u turn this into an mp3 iPod format!

  • I like your video among others.

  • such a fiting song title. MAN joy division was so deep.

  • There is no way a human being could have invented this song alone, this is divine intervention through Ian, period. I was blind but now I see.

  • This is Bernard Sumner 100% and not Ian Curtis. The song has been doctored some

  • I wish I was brave to go through with it like Ian.

  • This song makes you want to cry, cry and cry

  • awesome...

  • Goddammit Ian! Why did you have to leave us? You were so gifted, so beautiful. Even if this is New Order, the compassion that Ian had is still present. This is a Joy Division song at heart. RIP...

  • Comment removed

  • this is Bernard singing just after ian died. Only recorded once by JD at birmingham high hall on may 2nd 1980 with ian singing.

  • @conathona also version on heart and soul cd.

  • have to say ,best i've heard in 30 years!!

  • Is this new order as it does sound like Bernard Sumners voice more than Ian Curtis

  • fuckin hell im crying mate....Ian was unbelievable!!!!!! actually Ian IS STILL ubelievable!

  • @estn6 same as buddy. i was a young teenager and bought all the 12" singles and albums of Joy Division and |New Order. Now I'm 46, just listenign to them brings a tear to my eye and takes me back. By the way, my ex-husband 'lost them' during our divorce. What an arsehole. Keep listening

  • this is the original new order cover :(

  • this the version re-recorded by New Order in studio, released in 12 inch single, in remembrance of Ian after his sad departure from Joy Division.....

  • thanks so much for posting

  • @07foxmulder

    You're welcome.

  • If I were to get married I would have this played at the wedding....

  • So sad yet beautiful. I played it today on my ipod while at a wedding I hate. It made me feel so much better.

  • One of their best songs. This one always got to me the most.

  • for ever and ever !!!

  • This is the new order version slowed down. If you listen to them side by side they sound almost the same.

  • Это Барни поёт, чё вы спорите!

  • this is new order..

  • This is far the best version of Ceremony available here. Thank you!

  • The first is a live version, available on the Still album, from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on 2 May 1980, sixteen days before Curtis' suicide. The second, available on the Heart and Soul four-disc box set is from a rehearsal tape made in April/May 1980. The third is a version recorded at the soundcheck on the afternoon of 2 May 1980 (along with "Decades") and is only available on bootleg. In all recordings, the vocals are only partially audible.

  • This is the BEST I've heard. I could loop this for the whole day... dreamy....

  • @WILLIAMOFORANGE2003

    Thank you.

  • Not Joy Div, but New Order

  • Beautiful

  • god how i love this song best song of all time i'd say

  • wonderful.

  • wonderful.

  • yup - IC's singing of this was crap. This is good. now STFU

  • @cervusadfontes His singing was great, if he made it to the studio it would have been amazing.

  • @cervusadfontes what are you talking about ?he was still working out the vocals in the rehearsal version, the first soundcheck is inaudible, and the live recording some twat forgot to turn the microphpone on !! idiot.

  • Amazing voice amazing song gives me life. I just love them love their music and history totally in love. ;-]

  • dont care who's singing this a great fucking song!!!!!

  • wow, get it right this is new order

  • this is new order but the song is a joy division song.

  • Fake. Edited version of New Order's cover (downtuned and slowed down). There's only one recording of this song by Joy Division and it's a live performance.

Come on, how come no one realized this ISN'T Ian curtis' voice?!

  • Please do scroll down and see previous comments. It has been established that this is New Order. Ian Curtis died too soon that he only had one chance to sing this song live. And that live version of his was raw and quite inaudible for decent listening.

  • @dementiakane yeah its new order but ian curtis wrote this song...in my mind it will always be a joy division song

  • @makehavoc Joy Division wrote this song, not just Ian. Give some credit to the guys who composed the music.

  • @dementiakane There is also a mumbled rehearsal version with Ian Curtis singing. The lyrics are also slightly different in Jot division versions, but difficult to make out properly.

  • @amgcg There was also a rehearsal version that was recorded with Ian on vocals. It is longer than the live version recorded but unfortunately the lyrics on that version are pretty much indecipherable as well.

  • @amgcg there are 3 ACTUALLY LOL.

  • @guitar19904 heart and soul, still, wheres the other ?

  • @birdandthe theres one here which is a rehersal.

    /watch?v=LG90Lb_Wkwk

  • @amgcg There's actually two versions...One's a rehearsal one is live...Both are on YT.

  • @amgcg there are three versions of this song by joy division actually mate.

  • @amgcg There are about three versions of this song. 2 of them are just slightly different, but in the 3. version you can hardly hear any articulated words. I think this interpretation was absolutely not neccessary. It might be a reason why Ian made this his last song. Who knows if he wanted anybody of us to understand the lyrics?

  • @amgcg havent you heard the version on heart and soul cd ?

  • @amgcg There is a studio version with Ian.

  • @amgcg Yes it's a live performance and appears on Still but when i listened my just-bought CD i found that Ceremony was quite unaudible except the "reprise".

it's sad to say but my favourite version is New order's one

  • @amgcg so what if this is New order...? those members who left formed that band..so whats d diference?not Ian voice..sighh..so what

  • @amgcg i did

  • @amgcg - actually there is a studio version of Ceremony by Joy Division, it's on the Heart and Soul album (among others) - Stephen Morris counts the intro - It was recorded at Graveyard Studios, Prestwich.

  • @salfordladds It's a rehearsal, not a studio production with the purpose of being in an album.

  • @amgcg its one from rehersal dont forget about it!

  • @amgcg There are two, both live. The one on Still is great, except Ian's mike wasn't on in first verse.

  • @spiderkiss There are indeed two Joy Division versions as far as I know, but they're not both live. One is live, but the other is a rehearsal or a demo. No clean Joy Division version unfortunately.

  • @amgcg Wrong. There are two recordings of Ceremony with Ian Curtis. The live one, and another included in the Heart and Soul box set.

  • what an amazing copy. the only other joy divison copy of this, could hardly hear ians voice. thanks for this!

  • This is New Order rather. Ian Curtis did not live long enough to record Ceremony.

  • thanks for the info i thought ian did a version before new order. still one of my favourite songs :D

  • Yeah Ninja, the Cure's early, dark stuff was right up there. Good comments ;)

  • Charming!

  • dit is de best song ever made

  • ditis de beste song ever made

  • Epic song

  • This song reminds me of Canada

  • The trumpet blast going into the 80's! We are not tossers and there is a new wave!

  • Damn for the life of me I can't find a decent version of Ian Curtis PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Ian Curtis didn't have the chance to record this song, unfortunately. But he did sing it live...

  • Really? I never knew that! I guess that's why I couldn't find a decent version of this song recorded with Ian Curtis singing! That is a interesting fact to have at your disposal! How did you come to know this?

  • Oh, Ill break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, its got to be this time, Watching her, these things she said, The times she cried, Too frail to wake this time. Oh, Ill break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, its got to be this time, Avenues all lined with trees, Picture me and then you start watching, Watching forever, forever, Watching love grow, forever, Letting me know, forever.

  • How ironic that after all these years these lyrics hold true even more so today than ever! RIP IAN CURTIS

  • So true Mark, for Joy Division and hundreds of other artists ;) One should never be afraid to listen to old music ... not only can we find something superb, but we also learn from their lyrics. The world keeps spinning in circles ... physically and metaphoriclly. As a result some music is easily revived, like a Gryphon rising from the ashes.

  • For example we spend billions of dollars each year in communications in a world where no one has time to listen to anyone else! and No one want's to talk to anyone!

  • You and i know it ... everyone thinks they have something important to say, but nobody takes the time to listen ... some never learn. Ceremony by New Order versions are better, in my opinion. Recorded versions are best ... 2 or 3 of them i think. Search 'Ceremony New Order'. You will love them.

  • Dude thanks a lot for the suggestion!

  • @ghosttroop this is new order.

  • @birdandthe Yep its the beijing version of Ceremony by New Order. What a shame the uploader sped it up ... he fucked up a really good song.

  • @ghosttroop Beijing version ? not heard of that one, the best version was the original seven inch, too many remixes by new order and not enough new ideas.

  • @birdandthe If you search YouTube for: "New Order Ceremony Beijing version", you will know the version i like the best. I agree with u about remixes ;) youtube com/watch?v=kqjgIUYvS2s

  • Too many remixed by New Order? They only did 2 versions, both done in 1981 and both produced by Martin Hannett. This one is the 7" version, but slightly slowed down although there's another version that is even more slowed down. The "Beijing" version is actually the 12" version. "Beijing" is in reference to the music video which uses the 12" version. So only two released versions; the 7" and the 12". The rest are fan's manipulations and fan's mislabeling, hence the confusion.

  • I agree with you 100%

Funny how very the little the world changes!

  • I never consider songs by Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Cure, Big Country, etc..as old or passe. To me these songs are timeless and ever relevant and I can listen to them any day, any time.

  • Good call, dementiakane, and i tend to agree with you, in regards to Joy Division and New Order. In saying that, I owned every Cure album but don't play them much now. Not sure why.

  • I think the more popular Cure songs have reached a certain saturation point. The B-sides and obscure ones are the ones I stil listen to..

  • Do you think it is because The Cures Lyrics are a bit more topical and not as profound as Joy Division or New Order; I mean there music talked to a generation of young people and now continue to talk to a new generation. what are your thoughts?

  • Some of the Cure stuff was quite deep and had some heavy bass, which i was right into ... but i just can not listen to songs like 'Love Cats'. Primary and Jumping Someone Elses Train, etc. still get played

  • HA HA HA! yeah I know what you mean!

    Although I Think The Cures,"Caterpillar,"

Is one of those songs that has stood then test of time...sounds better today!

  • I consider, the cure (there dark stuff, especially pornography) to be up there with joy division, I think they were similar musically very dark, the cure was around longer and went in some directions I did not like, as you mentioned above, but who knows what directions ian and joy division would have went in.

The cure (dark stuff), joy divison, the smiths, they should all be appreciated, not debated in the days of terrible music, they made great deep music, with intelligent lyrics.

  • On a side note I was watching the cure trilogy last week, and the figurehead really stood out to me as a song that could have been performed by ian, I really appreciate both bands, the following lyrics especially.

    "Too many secrets

    Too many lies

    Writhing with hatred

    Too many secrets

    Please make it good tonight...

But the same image haunts me

    In sequence

    In despair of time"

  • @Ninja121

    Amen to that.

  • @Ninja121 the cure were muppets.

  • Joy Division and older New Order stuff, on the other hand, are a bit heavier / faster than The Cure and it still works for me :) Robert Smith wrote some deep stuff and had a cult goth following too, but i will always be into that early New Order ... its like techno sometimes and even though the music is simple it really is something else. Way ahead of their time. :)

  • Big Country! I was a big fan of there music when I was young! I'm going to have to go and check em out !

  • @MARKSVIGIL try the car boot.

  • Phoenix

  • Like the Phoenix, yes. Glad someone undestands me, even when the words i write are incorrect ;)

  • ... like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Apologies, i was a sleepy boy when i wrote that comment. :)

  • OMG - this song kills me. Too beautiful for words. How many years later and it still gives me goosebumps.

  • I know right? It sounds better today then it did all those years ago

  • still prefer the version they recorded a few months later. i'm fortunate enough to have both 12" single versions and the 7" as well. this song was an obsession for me many years ago. and it will never fade.

"this is why events unnerve me"

  • watching forever ,letting me know

  • sad as i sound to say it lol this is and has been my myspace song for absolutely ages, its never going to change either lol one of my fave songs which ian wrote, shame it was never properly recorded with his singing

  • I can't stop listening to this! It's so beautiful! *cries a bit*

  • Need some Kleenex? :)

  • Yes, please! *cries a bit more*

    ;)

  • hahaha. here, take the whole box!

  • Perfect! Thank you! Haha!

  • please!!!!!!!!!! a need much kleenex! i can stop crying! i cant stop! im dying

  • the desperation in this songs kills me it's unbelievable

  • Such a beautiful song!

  • Indeed. A timeless masterpiece.

  • Is Ian Curtis singing this?

  • No, it's Barney. This is New Order but Ceremony will always be Ian's...

  • Loved the video!!! This song rocks! It could be released today and would still kick butt.
