  • Man I wish I was the person who was able to drive all the Ford Trucks in these commercials

  • The Courier was junk, but the 6 cyl 300ci motor was a workhorse and probably the best inline 6 ever made.

  • @aron252 Back then, the 6-cylinder engine was not offered on any 1979 F-Series pickup truck in California...every one of them in that state was a V8.

  • Well you could put a Cummins in it and really build a truck with endless power and the best MPG. Too bad Ford never got the cummins they would have had an untouchable truck!

  • @BullDoggStyle, Haha, my brother did that to his 01 f250, now we are going to do the swap in my 78.

  • man i was never alive during them times but i still wish they said displacement of the engine in cubic inches these days. can't get any better than a 78-79 f150!

  • i bought a 79 F-250 supercab long box with a 460 for $100. hauled serious loads and some serious ass! got probly under 10mpg all the time but nothing could lay a patch like that truck. bagged the shit out of it and only ever had to change the plugs and air filter and sold it for $450, the guy who bought it still uses it daily around town

  • This ad never mentioned my 79 with the 460 in it. Although they could of said ""UNBEATEN IN AWESOMENESS!!!" and had a shot of me jumping over the moon or something.

  • Hmmm just purchased a old 79 extended cab f130 have the dino resualts from 1993 for it when they built the engine it has at the crank 425hp and 530 ft of torque 0.60 over forged pistion balnce crawer cam hooker headers needs new mufflers crappy turbos on the there but it will get flowmasters next month. I;m not sure why they put so many ponies in and old for truck but whatever it does haul ass and make some nasty burnouts .

  • Funny...31 years later and they could only squeeze an extra 5 mpg out of the V8 in the trucks. WTF???

  • @dadsbabypu What do you expect? Thats precisely it, a V8 TRUCK. It's not a Pruis... What recent, gas, V8, full size truck gets amazing fuel economy anyway?

  • @dadsbabypu ratings before the mid 1980s are inflated. The EPA has changed the methodology twice since then. It probably got 14 or so highway empty

  • @Srd1126 actualy the milage is pretty spot on. My 76 F-150 with 302 and C6 gets 17, brothers 79 with300 and 4 speed gets 24, cousins 74 with swaped in 302 and 5 speed gets 24. Mine has a 4 brl carb the other two are stock 2brls's. These are highway numbers, around town we all lose a couple but still right there.

My 74 F-350 Super Camper Special on the other hand is lucky to break 8 mpg on the highway downhyil slope with a tail wind, but the 460 will pull anything I want to hook up to :)

  • While Semi trucks have doubled their fuel milage sinced the 80's from 4mpg to over 10mpg pickups are still for the most part under 20mpg city hmm why buy a 50,000 dollar king ranch ford when restoring a 1977 f150 will yield same mileage and better looks?

  • 10 MPG? I hate to tell you but the most you'll get out of a semi in 2010 is 7.4 MPG. Less if your rig is new & has the new particulate filtering technology required by law.

  • Dont have 2010's for that reason. I do have 2003 to 2006 Freightliners w/ 310/460 cummings setup. Running Single screw w/ single tires on truck and trailer. running 1650 RPM @62mph we run empty to Yuma then back to El paso. My worst guy is in the 7's, My fleet average is 8.76mph and my best guy (actually a lady) running 10.06 to 10.37 for 2009. My guys make .50cents a mile on the hub and dont care about the 62mph and run only 59,000 gross. We also run water injection which is free.

  • My guys dont spend time at the TA's playing video games or gossiping to other drivers at the Flying J or Leaving the truck on the scale at the pilot while they go get the ticket all while the truck is left running outside.

  • @RU469NO you can get 10 or more if bob tailing.....

  • @RU469NO, I second that, i have a 78 ford f250 im gonna restore and put a 5.9 cummins in it.

  • @RU469NO i agree

  • @RU469NO i kr luxuary is gay

  • to bad that got no where close to those mpg on all of those engines espically the v8 they got like8mpg

  • haha thats no lie, although when u got the ponies, u gotta feed em!! lol

  • The government formula for figuring MPG is flawed, you will never actually get the MPG you see on the sticker.

  • @kdraper2007 its all driving style guys, and where you drive, but getting 15mpg out of a carbed 302? its doable but hard

  • @petorian1 I get 11 MPG consistently (town/highway) from my '70 F-250 390/C6 on 87 octane. I get nearly 13 using premium, but that doesn't make it worth the extra money. Even towing I get a little over 9 MPG. My '80 F-150 300/T-18 got over 20 on 87. I'd say these figures are fairly conservative.

  • UNBEATEN UNBEATEN UNBEATEN

  • lol i have an 88, almost an entire decade later and its about 15MPG...i guess when gas is less then a buck a gallon no need to even give a crap

  • Unbeaten MPG, 15mpg LOL.

  • kdraper, I still have mine. I drive it nearly every day. It has a 3.9 liter Cummins 4BTA diesel in it now. About 237,000 total miles. Mine is from a salt-free state - so there isn't a speck of rust anywhere at all.

  • I had a 74' F-100 with the 460 V-8. I put a thrush muffler on it. I would go to town & park at a store & when I would come back & start the motor it would set off car alarms all around me. that was a cool truck. 4 barrel carb.

  • piss! you couldn't get the good 300 CID 6 in California, glad i dont live there

  • i think its funny how in the fine print it says "your mileage may differ depending on speed, distance and weather."

Plus, I didn't even know they made diesels in the 70's... they must be really rare if i havent seen one, especially since i grew up with all 70's ford trucks. f150, f250 and an '85 ranger.

  • The way they figure mileage has little relation to actual real world mileage. it is a formula the government came up with. that's why they put the "Actual mileage may very" disclaimer on the commercials.

  • hell yes they can outtow a 302!!!

    FORD302POWER, did the '87, '92, and '89 all have 1-barrel carbs?

  • yes most of them had a 1 barrel. but i do believe that the 400 and up had 2 barrel, unless it was special ordered.

  • actually dude I was referring to that guy's specific pickups. oh, and i'm pretty sure all those years came standard with fuel injection anyway whoops me

plus im also pretty sure that most all the V8's came standard with at least a 2 barrell. High Output models came with 4 barrels.

  • yeah they probably did.. when i posted that, i didnt know as much as i do now.. lol and i am sure you are correct about the carbs.

  • Now that I think about it..... '87 was the first year of fuel injection for the six bangers and '83 or '84 was the first year of fuel injection for the 302.

  • Yea, I'd hate to be the guy fixing the trucks and cars made in the early 80's.. With the start of fuel injection, switching from carbuerated.. Some were like half and half.... oh my god that would be a pain.... lol

  • Our old 87 with 300 and 4 speed only gets about 12 mpg. I get about 15mpg on my 92 with a 5 speed. our neighbor got about 17 mpg with his 89 when it was new, had the 300 and 5 speed

  • It wasnt a v6 and didnt have more torque--and it cant out tow a 302--(it wasnt a v6 option)

  • Our '79 F150 4WD with the 300 six never got any better than 15, maybe 16 on a really good day. They DO say that is with the overdrive trans, though. Ours never had that.

  • yes, but how long did your '79 last. we got rid of ours in 2006 & even though the bed was long gone & the cab was rusted down to near nothing, she still ran great. we had a real low geared 4 speed. I pulled down a house with it. that's when I became a pickup truck man. much more fun to drive then any car ever made.

  • you know, there's somethin' women like about a pickup man...

  • damn remember when those were good gas mileages lol. ive got a 78 bronco with a 400m and im gettin 10mpg, not too bad i guess.

  • um yeah, idk bout that. 6 cylinder haulin the heavy full size around aint gettin 18 mpg.

  • The 300 was an INLINE 6. And also I have seen 78-79 Ford F-150s or 250s with an extended cab

  • you know, in the 70s gas chrises the govt said that they would make manufactures make there cars get better gas milage... that was 30 some years ago. today they have only improved by 5-6 mpg. lol that just doesnt seem to add up does it? hell if they really would have pushed the envolope our cars would be getting 40+ and our trucks 30+

  • The goverment relaxed the restrictions during the late 80s. Also the old stuff operated on hydraulics instead of computers.

  • the 6 mpg is wrong, it wasnt the best, we had a 78 dodge d100 with a slant and it got over 20 mpg.

  • The Courier was a rebadged Mazda B-series...

  • montrosepatriot, so you know, ford owns and makes mazda. even then. that would explain why.

  • My '79 F-150 had a 300cid six and was a awesome, tough vehicle.

  • does have any old school pickups for pictures?

  • Can you believe the regular-sized trucks did NOT have extended cabs and averaged less than 20 miles to the gallon??? By the way, thanks for uploading a few post-'75 videos for me, WC! :)

  • lol, what do you expect? Ford pretty much invented the extended cab truck though, credit them with that much at least.

I find it ridiculous they offered a V6...never actually seen one myself.

  • Its not ridiculous not everyone wanted the horsepower of a V8 and the 300-6cylender AKA: Straight 6 motor has more torque than the 302 V8 and will actually out tow the 302 V8. So don't knock the V6 option. :)

  • kishkizzle, i belive for DID invent the extended cab/crew cab..they made them in the 60's too... then chevy copied in the early 80's or something like that.

  • i just had this talk with my father.. he said, "why is it weird that the I6 has more torque?"

and he said it is something to do with the way the crankshaft and inline thing is set up that does it.. i still find it weird..

  • they did come with an kingkab option but its not in the commercial. that usealy came on the 79 f350 though. the gas milage on that was worse cause of its 460 bigblock. you can pass anyhting on the road with a 460...cept gasstations =]

  • not true, ford made the crew cab in the 60's too.. there's a '68 crew cab for sale where i live. its 4wd too! let me knoe if you want it.. ill give you the link.

  • really i didnt know they did that id buy it but the economy destroyed my billfold. =[

  • ha, that sucks.. i would only know from hearing, I'm not quite there yet.. lol

hopefully it will be healed and all better by the time i get there.. haha

Yea, the 79 crew cab is on my dream car list, along with a 2010 ford raptor (6.2L), 2010 Shelby GT500 convertible.. among others.. hahaha only in my dreams. =)

  • yea it does i worked for the scool district till they let me go now i only work 1 day a week and cant find another job it sucks. i personaly dont like new cars i mean there fast and all i jsut dont like the emmisions controlls systems and i have extreme distrust for computer controlled vehicals

  • Yea, I agree about the emissions systems, they suck. Especially, most people who can't afford to pay to get them fixed will destroy them trying to do it on their own.. lol

My dad got me a 1977 Ford F150 for my bday a couple years back.. Even it has the emissions and smog pump, etc. on it... He wants to "rip" it off and register it as a pre-smog year. We just haven't found a donor truck yet..

Well, sorry about your job situation, hope you find one soon. The economy's just so ef-d up right now.

  • well mine was suppsoed to have emmisions restrictions but any vehical 25 model years or older is whats called emmisions exempt i DO not have catalytic converters on mine theyv been removed long ago. as for my egr systems thats goin byebye. the best part is when i get NYS inspections im exempt from emmisions tesin so theyll never know. even if somehow the law did change about that fact i WORK for an NYSI station so id jsut simply put another vehical on the dyno and slap a pass sticker on mine!

  • My dad has a 1974 F250, and in the time he's owned it (since 1998) it has turned into a no-smog vehicle, with it being 25 years old, so he got new headers without the return pipe, heads, no cat converters, etc.. But the years havent changed in 9 years. so were stuck at 1975..and with mine being a '77, i cant put the stuff on it want (headers, intake, carb, etc.) well, i could, but i would have to change it every 2 years to get smoged.. plus i want 4WD, so we might get whole new truck..

  • joebeckham- the raptor F150 is sick.. ive seen videos of it and i love the truck.. personally for a project car id love to have that F150 model in the 70s for a project car

  • yea, me too.. well mine, since i live in california, it needs to smog, so i want to find an earlier truck.. maybe 4wd and then i will have an all around better truck.. lol

yea, it would be sweet to have a project that i could get home from school and work on it a little, but still drive it the next day.. that would be sweet, but my dad is not cooperating and i keep asking him to bring my truck up to the house so i can work on it, but he just ignores me... lol hes mean.. haha
