I love how he plays like 3 or 4 different guitars in the money for nothing video, each one totally different. Great story about this classic song too!
i gotta disagree with you Mark...he didn't give you a song. He gave you words and thoughts which you turned into lyrics and then into an awesome song with one of the most badass licks and sound to ever come out of a les paul..or any guitar for that matter...i can never get tired of listenin to this song
There's no such thing as playing a song like this "correctly", it isn't classical music. Knopfler doesn't even play it the same way twice, it's more about getting it to feel right. Anyone else should interpret it with there own spin, same is true with any music that is more about feel and expression than technical perfection like playing with an orchestra. What's the point in trying to copy someone else's playing when it's totally free and feel based in the first place.
@MalinariTheMind Well said. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and now that this is the case. When trying to copy note for note, the feel is lost and you can almost sense the guitarist is concentrating vs. sharing his/her creativity.
@2010njdevil Absolutely right, I once saw a guy teaching this on some guitar magazine CD and he tried to get every nuance, all the accidental harmonics, every last tiny squeek. By the time he'd finished his performance sounded utterly robotic, might as well have been a computer program playing it. I've been playing 20 years too and I still get floored by B.B King playing one note with vibrato....Try teaching to play that "correctly"...!
There are fantastic covers of quitarists on youtube but i havent yet seen anyone doing money for nothing "correctly" except knopfler himself. Thank you to flametahu for uploading this !
The audio file of some of the riff is out of sync with the video, which damages its teaching value. For example, at second 35.7, the left hand does a slide that is only heard 2 beats later.
@biffbyford Listen to it on a decent system then instead of your laptop speakers. 80s production was cleaner, crisper and punchier than today's overprocessed distorted rot.
I wonder what that meat head was doing after this great song was released with his lines in them. That's got to be so ironic to say some lines in a store and then have them formed into a great song to be seen and heard by millions. Thank God for meat heads and their classy lines! (It's a shame that some parts of the lyrics had to be banned)
this is soo deceiving, its incredibly hard to play this in the same style and as proficiently as mark plays it. if i was to learn it this way this 30 second riff would take me the day to get it right.
Waste of time arguing over subjective material like who is the best without an objective measure (and I don't think album sales is it) . I remember hearing Dire Straits back in the 70's, it was a completely new sound and technically excellent. To my ear Nirvana always sounded derivative, I spent a bit of time trying to find who originally wrote smells like teen spirit because I was dead certain I had heard it before. Listen to Brothers in Arms if you want to see what Knopfler is capable of.
The reason I can't get into Vai the way I do Knopfler is because when I saw Vai he had a god damn fan on stage to blow his hair like he was outside in the wind. His shirt is open, he's got long hair and he's got a fucking fan on stage with him. I was turned off immediately. Knopfler and Gilmour is where it's at
In a leauge totally of his own. Clean, powerful, unique cords. Not to mention the level of creativity. Would not even mention Zepplin, Satriani, or even Clapton in the same breath. Eddie Van Halen LOL.
Come on. Knopfler is original, but you know, so are guys like Satriani and Vai.
Steve Vai and Satriani have spent the last 20 years being ripped off! The stuff guys like Muse play now - Vai was perfecting that sound in the late 1980s
@MrCeej9999 yeah, but part of being a good guitarist is winning over a fan base, and those guys just don't have enough hits. Sure, their actual technical ability is top notch, but they just don't write killer riffs and kick ass like guys like Knopfler, Slash, EVH, or Dimebag
"......thats just two strings" That may be true but with Mark Knopfler there is a hell of a lot happening on those two strings with both his right and left hands
@EranProductions no i did not these are my favourites list yours may certainly not match mine. All said and done every guitarist has his own style and mark is just AMAZING!!!!!!
@SUBHABRATAANDLARA As much as I love Iommi's sound, his actual technique wasn't that brilliant. Still, considering he only had two fingers, he was fantastic
RollingStone say, Jimmy Page is the 9th greatest guitarist ever ect... & personaly i don't like the cunt or Led Zepplin & i don't appreciate their music, fuck knows i've tried to. Bought & gave away a few albums, namely iv....shite. How can any knowledgable of rock music person put Jimmy Page at #9 & Mark Knopfler #27 it's supposed to be 'The Greatest' list not some sensless Rollingstone cunt's oppinion. Mark Knopfler should be realised by EVERYONE as one of the top 10 guitarists of all time.
@The19763 Jimmy Page its okay for that position... but Knopfler should deffinitly be in the top 10... I mean.. Cobain was in a better position than Knopfler.. THAT is sillyness
Agreed , Cobain was an gifted songwriter and though his somewhat limited technical skills, he created some really great riffs, but beating Knopfler, no way!
@lucascjardim yeah but that list is voted on by general public and they don't have an idea, if you had a list that was voted on by musicians that list would be rubbish.
@lucascjardim jimmy page, david gillmour, mark knopfler, eric clapton, hendrix, jack white, and u2 are huge influances in my musical passion. someone tell me im missing out? :D
@lucascjardim I think Satriani and Knopfler are the best because unlike most guitarists they do the most with the guitar. There are tons of artists out there that can write "better" songs in the sense that theyll be in the top ten for the week, but Satch and MK's music dont really start until they go off on a solo. Eric Clapton for instance, as great as he is, doesnt do much with his guitar. 1 out of every 8 songs ill just throw out there does he actually solo - MK its 10 out of 10 songs.
@MrCeej9999 I know Vai I have just never been into his music really. But even if his music isnt my favorite hes definitely in the top 5 best guitarists. Not sure who Richards is though. What band is he from? Im glad somebody else understands what im saying. People look at me with wide eyes when I say Hendrix sucks, because he literally sounds awful and his guitar screeches with random notes, but Satch and MK - theyre flawless players.
@lucascjardim all those lists are rubbish, they are voted on by the general public who don't have a fucking idea, not those that actually play an instrument or have some expertise in the industry. It's like getting a politician to talk about great sports people in various sports, like they have a fucking idea !
@lucascjardim no not really. cobain pretty much brought to the mainstream a whole new style of music from the underground and sold it to the masses. he was a damn good songwriter and musician. he is above knopfler because he killed hair metal and changed the whole music culture. that's what rolling stone thinks. In my opinion, there is no who's better than who. knopfler and cobain are two awesome artists who both blow me away. music isn't a competition.
@Maxshard that's not his famous song. and if you're any kind of music lover you'd know that legendary musicians aren't that way because of that one single that they wrote. they are legendary because of those albums that they created that left a mark on music history. cobain made 3, and redefined the 90s. I'm sorry, but I'm going with rolling stone on this one. but ONLY this one.
@kermicheo Perhaps you would care to remind us all of how many albums Cobain has sold compared to Dire Straits. I believe Dire Straits have sold almost 150 million albums alone, forgetting the sngles, and Cobain? Cobain and co were a talentless hype.
@Maxshard I'm not going to get into a bitching contest with you to prove that nirvana is a "better" band. kurt cobain was a brilliant musician and I'm sure millions of other people would agree. you think dire straits is the better band, fine. you're entitled to your own opinion. you don't have to start pissing in my face with all of your "facts." both dire straits and nirvana made brilliant works, and they're both unique and different from each other. neither one was a hype
@qwerty80204 OK, I'll listen to it all sometime soon, I promise you, but I would recommend that you listen to some more Dire Straits. 'Where do you think you're going', 'every street', 'sultans of swing' (live from Alchemy) etc. Always listen to the live versions, they are better,
Dire Straits have sold almost as many albums since they broke up as Nirvana ever sold.
I do get a little peeved at Cobain being rated as a better guitar player than Knopfler, he was good but not like Knofler.
I actually love Jimmy Page, but what really pissed me off about that list was putting George Harrison at something like 19th. He wrote some brilliant songs and I love the Beatles but they put him about so many others including Randy Rhoads, Angus Young and Eddie Van Halen (who was only at 70!!!)
@ThePatrickMacalister thats good because he sure dosent look like Mark Knopfler anymore. he has changed a lot since the last time i saw him..if he didnt have a guitar in this video, and if i did not see his name on the video, i would have no clue who he was
@vincentdsouza10 its not that he looks old. its other things. his eyes look different, he no longer has that long pointed nose, his whole face looks different, hes put on lots weight. when i see older rock stars i can still recognize them and see a glimpse of what they looked like when they were young, but mark looks nothing like he did even 5 years ago. looks like a complete different person.
@ClassicRockfan79 Everybody ages differently, some people can change quite a bit. Genetics have a lot to do with it. Depends a lot also on how much weight one gains and where it goes ;) . For some people it goes straight to the face and it changes the appearence a lot. Mark doesn´t look old but he´s appearence is a lot "softer" these days. But I´d say it´s aging coupled with weight gain. Yes, he looks very different than just a few years ago. But very nice.
Mark has been a major influence on my songwriting. If you want, check it by clicking "MrAlvarda" down below. Songs like "Turn around", "Train of life" or "Corporate World" are definitely the closest to his style.
