I am not even sure if this is my history. My mother is Native and Black, and my father is Native and Black. People in my family had forgotten the past, and do not know the history. Is there any way I can find out from the government files?
My ancestor was Lam Debro (5 generations ago) and he was a Black Seminole. He was born on a reservation in Oaklahoma, was kidnapped around the age of 5 and brought into Texas as a slave. When slavery was abolished he married Sophie. Their children clearly have Native American characteristics physically, when you see the old pictures (the few we have). We're sure the slave last name was Deveraux or some variation and not Debro (due to phonetics).

I know that the Native Americans are more aligned with the early slaves and African Americans as opposed to the European settlers in this country. Many slaves escaped and ingratiated themselves with Native Americans in the 1700 - 1800s and married them. I am highly skeptical of whites who claim to be of Native American ancestry. I just find it hard to believe. Not ruling it out altogether.

My ancestor was Lam Debro (5 generations ago) and he was a Black Seminole. He was born on a reservation in Oaklahoma, was kidnapped around the age of 5 and brought into Texas as a slave. When slavery was abolished he married Sophie. Their children clearly have Native American characteristics physically, when you see the old pictures (the few we have). We're sure the slave last name was Deveraux or some variation and not Debro (due to phonetics).

I know that the Native Americans are more aligned with the early slaves and African Americans as opposed to the European settlers in this country. Many slaves escaped and ingratiated themselves with Native Americans in the 1700 - 1800s and married them. I am highly skeptical of whites who claim to be of Native American ancestry. I just find it hard to believe. Not ruling it out altogether.

there may have been mixing of the blood lines, but Native Americans and Africans were not and ARE not the same. They didn't originate from the same place! Native Americans would have more in common with Orientals - when they crossed the bridge into North America. Look at nomadic Mongols and the Inuit of Canada. They look the same, don't they? However, they are not black. Blacks came to North America a LONG time after Native Americans got there.
