I've been to 1 Star Trek convention and Jimmy Doohan was the reason I went. Great guy: funny, charming, and honest. Loved his stories about slaloming his airplane between the wireless telephone poles while training with the R.A.F. My souvenier from the convention: a 'Beam me up Scotty, there's no intelligent life down here' bumper sticker that has been on four cars so far.
I had the pleasure to see Jimmy three times in my lifetime, and this is about the time he was still mobile and able to get around okay. About 1992 I enjoyed this same story at a show in Ohio. A proud Canadian performer for the world - miss you very much Mr Doohan, thank you for your laughter!!
This is awesome, I love clips of Doohan in the years right before he started looking like the dude from the DIABEETUS commercials. Not feeling the fanny pack, though.
He's so funny and I loved him as Scotty. It's too bad DeForest Kelley can't say, "He's dead, Jim." Now I'm depressed, but still, this clip was funny. :]
Saw him three or four times. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He respected the fans and would wait patiently to sign every autograph and chat with people. He was also a hero of WWII but never mentioned that. You would have loved him. We all did.
BTW, RIP James Doohan. He made Scotty and set the bar for all engineers that came after him in Trek. I dont care if he isn't your favorite in the entire Trek continuum.
They need more stuff like this on the movie DVD's, if they ever hit Blu-Ray. Who knew beside the convention go-ers that he was a comedian?
I was thankfull to see Scotty in what was his last convention appearance. Poor Guy probably shouldn't have been there due to his health, and it took him ages to get through a single short story, but I was happy to see one of my favorites there :). And the jokes where worth it :).
That was great and very very funny. It makes you sad that James Doohan died, but it also makes you glad that he was able to have fun in his life and go to things like conventions and play around.
That was a tough one, because for once that info was not on the tape. I doug out some of my old convention stuff from the basement and found it at last: 23rd-25th of August 1991. It was held in Nuremberg, Germany.
1991? Ah, so that means Star Trek VI was already in post-production by this time. I remember it came out December 1991. I was 7 at this time and I remember when I would go to Atlantic City with my family and I wanted to watch this in the room while my parents gambled downstairs, it'd be unavailable cuz people were watching this all the time every hour. And back then you couldn't just get it by demand like nowadays on spectravision AC hotel cable. Now I'm 24 and have had it on DVD for years.
Good God! He was hilarious!

What a good guy, and a good storyteller. Loved an audience. And his observations are spot-on, too.
