j2hakhomeboy... You are a real asshole and people should flame the shit out of you! When you have studied guitar and learned the craft like johnny, then open your mouth. I see Johnny as a great guy who can play a mean guitar. Homeboy, if you wan't visuals over quality go jerk off to a britanny spears video, smoke some tobacco and light a arson fire in your own neighborhood. You have proved that you are a real dumbass to the world on youtube!
Johnny needs to start slimming down or he's going to find himself playing the Cardiac Infarction Blues.
We need him too. The current crop of country music pop stars isn't exactly brimming over with guitar talent like the genre once had. I don't think we'll be getting any more Chet Atkins', Danny Gattons, or James Burtons any time soon.
@gratslogic I don't find the SRV influence. Maybe because here he's playing a blues-rock tune, but I find him more into Robben Ford or Gary Moore. Anyways, every guitar player picks things from others. You can hear a lot of Allbert King and Hendrix in SRV's playing.
He's good, but the song is a song that closely resembles Pride and Joy. However, the lead riffs are truly distinctive. Who would have thought we would see a blues guitarist throwing tapping, almost unheard! He pulls this off extremely well and not overdone as most tappers tend get carried away and make faces. Beck adds in tapping, briefly sneaking it in, the next thing you know is that he blown you away.
Lastly, who would have thought a blind man could play as clean as SRV.
@j2thakhomeboy He is fat. In fact he is enormously fat. Wait a minute ... he is quite possibly the most gigantic guitarist I have ever seen. I am surprised his fingers even reach the fretboard. I would expect that all the small objects orbiting his gargantuan physique would put the guy off but they don't. I would normally worry about Johnny reading my comments but if he wasn't lacking optically he would need a telescope to see them as he is the human version of Jabba The Hut.
I JUST CAME ACROSS THIS FELLOW MOMENTS AGO AND I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I AM HEARING. YOU KNOW, IT JUST BLOWS ME AWAY, THAT THE OLD ADAGE KEEPS COMING UP: YOU CANNOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, WHO WOULD HAVE EVER THOUGHT BY LOOKING AT THIS FELLOW WALKING DOWN THE SIDE WALK OR STANDING INSIDE A MUSIC STORE, WITH HIS BIG COUNTRY HAT ON, THAT THIS HOT SHOT CAT COULD PICK UP A GUITAR AND ROCK LIKE HE DOES. JUST MIND BLOWING, MIND BLOWING, MIND BLOWING.
@acuity67 I agree. He sounds a little like Vince Gill. Man, this guy is the total package. Vocal chops, and a MONSTER guitarist. I am humbled by this man. God Bless him!
@AbrahamVanHasselhoff His vocals sound a bit like Vince Gill but Vince couldn't light a candle to Johnny's guitar prowess, but let me add that Vince is a very talented guitarist in his own right.
After seeing him play either you go home an practice your ass off, or put your guitar in it's case under your bed and become a shoe maker. There aint no better player alive today, hands down.
@GahDub SRV is a legend and J.H. is a rather obscure artist still. So there is a bit of irony that J.H. would be so obscure when I find him to be more entertaining than SRV. I would also hope that J.H. would appreciate hearing that SRV fans find his playing to be more favored.
@1971SuperLead So...your point is "irony" then? Because I always find these comparison notes strange otherwise. For instance, how do you like JH's style to Billy Gibbons? Or, how 'bout Duane Allman? For that matter, what's your comparison to Tommy Emmanuel? Then there's......Gary Hoey....or......?......Anyhow, MY own point is I find it fruitless to do suggest comparisons. Btw, I think JH is wonderful. He was just playing next door to me last night. Killed 'em!
@GahDub Yes, it's ironic and irony is often interesting. Also, JH and SRV have rather similar styles. ZZ Top, Allman bros or Gary Hoey are in another arena. They're far too dissimilar to be ironic. George Thorogood is a far closer match. Plus, I frikkin love Billy and Duane! Stevie....I admire and respect but I don't own any of his CDs for some reason.
@1971SuperLead Okay then....I get where you're coming from. However, I think what threw me is how I don't think Johnny sounds all that similar to SRV. JH is more similar to Steve Vai or even Mr. Van Halen.....that is if one can imagine Eddie doing country. I guess it's the "hammering" connection. Stevie has more "bite"...to me. Must've been those super thick strings. Great banter. Thanks man. :)
@GahDub Ok, in this video he sounds a lot like SRV, especially in the beginning. But he sure has a lot of other styles too, like his bluegrass or his Opus D' Funk. In those videos it makes no sense to compare him to SRV. Opus D' Funk does make me think of Duane Allman or Vince Gill.
Somehow some people can't just enjoy the beauty of it without hanging itself on something other then the gift that has been given to them by such a wonderful musician.
We all will do our crossing when the time is right so now worries and enjoy the music.
@biggfingger5 Uhhhh....think of all the awesome guitar players we have lost. Now...how many of them were big guys????? None. So you might be getting ahead of yourself there. You DIDN'T say that you hoped he 'stayed off planes'...and THAT has killed more guitar players I think than anything. Don't worry about the man's size. Enjoy him while he IS here. I get that you like him I just think the comment re: his weight was unnecessary. I miss Jimi; Stevie, Randy etc and POUNDS did not kill them.
Ed King was that rotund for a few years. And what about how plump Malmsteen's fingers have been. Oh, yea, don't forget Charlie Daniels.....fiddle and Les Paul picker!
I just became aware of J. Hiland from a feature in March issue from The Guitar store .I've always wanted to see a person with fat fingers play because I have fat fingers and struggle terribly to play clean.
