Saw one at an airshow once, where at first it sat as crowds walked by... but then every pilot that passed began to salute the aircraft itself. It then became the spectacle it deserved to be. The symbol of freedom, long live the spitfire.
You have to remember that the mustang was a dog of a plane at first until they put the merlin engine in it. It was that shit that the had to use it as a ground attack aircraft and it wasn't good at that either.
Wasn't it the British who put the merlin in the mustang in the first place?
You must also remember some "Spitfires also had "Griffon Engines in them, on the later supermarine mark 5 spitfires and not "Merlin Engines. Merlin Engines were on the earlier models of "Spitfires. I read that one American quoted " in a P-51, i feel like a sitting duck because of lack of armour on the plane, this gave the P-51 better overall range over a "SPITFIRE, but the "SPITFIRE had BETTER ARMOUR BETTER GUNNS BETTER HEIGHT SPEED BETTER OVERALL SPEED ON NEW MODELS.
The equivalent version of the Spitfire (mk XIV) is actually slightly faster then the P-51D. The Mustang had the range of the escort fighter it was. The Spit had the climb rate and cannon firepower of the interceptor it was.
It does. The howling on the Mustang spoils it I reckon... The Spitfire suits the sound better anyway, I prefer the Merlin to the Griffin in a Spitfire.
The RAF used almost every version of the Mustang from the A to the K, so there is nothing wrong with having a D in British colours. Although RAF D version Mustangs usually wore 'standard' camo, some of them were left all silver like American aircraft except of course for the RAF roundals!
The mustang was good but the spitfire was the supreme fighter of ww2 and no plane will ever carry such a legacy, and the sound of the merlin engine is music to the ears. But from the MkXII-XV onwards(around 1943) the merlin was replaced with the rolls royce griffin 63 engine, Also sounded great and gave the plane more power pushing it's top flying speed upto 448mph
the hurricane actually outdid the spitfire in kills during ww2. mainly cuz they headed for the bombers while the spits fought of the 109's so it depends on which statistics you have as reference. but when it comes to dogfights the spitfire's truly sharp edge.
I believe both planes are fantastic and worthy of acclaim. I think I read somewhere that the Mustang was greatly enhanced when fitted with the British Merlin engine as used in the Spitfire and the reason they were able to fly the Mustang over Berlin was because they fitted drop tanks to extend flying time. Makes sense when you think that after June 1944 the allies were gaining territory in Belgium, Holland etc and wouldn't need to fear the Luftwaffe from airfields in these countries.
@SupersonicStu06 Well, I think it's a pleasure to debate "Mustang" vs "Spitfire" both works of engineering art. But the Mustang had a Packard-Merlin engine. Significantly different in detail from the original, finely crafted beast.
Watching those Spits and hearing that kid's reaction brought me to tears. My father was a navigator in the RAF in WWII and I was brought up in awe of the Spit, the Hurricaine and the Mosquito.
1-2-3 MUSTAAANG!
Love this vid!
Thanks!

The sound of those old engine's makes my hairs stand up! I hope I can always hear them when the need arises!

even though the spit dont have as much range as the stang,
Id still take the Spit,
maybe its the exhaust stacks in the stang but the spit sounds noticably throatier than the stang even though they both have Roll's Merlin's,

The Spitfire is more than an aeroplane, it's a symbol of courage, bravery and defiance against all the odds.

Spitfire...number one fighter of WW2
In at the forefront from 1939 through to 1945 and was NEVER obsolete and always managed to keep pace with the rest.
No other fighter managed that.
