I don't understand the negative comments. Yes, Dusty's is the definitive version (no question), but Bobbie- a great talent in her own right- does a very nice version here...
@BlackMonk66 - YOU MIGHT BE CORRECT - BUT SINCE YOU DID NOT INCLUDE YOURSELF, MUST WE ASSUME THAT YOU ARE A WORN OUT TWO-BIT ROAD WHORE, WHO HAS HAD ENOUGH SEX PARTNERS TO FILL THE ASTRO-DOME, OR AT LEAST YANKEE STADIUM?
PERHAPS WE COULD GET YOU ON THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW.
OR AT LEAST YOU MIGHT TRY AND RECOGNIZE HUMOR WHEN YOU SEE IT.
@BlackMonk66 - THERE IS ALSO AN ENGLISH PHRASE, USED QUITE OFTEN, TO THOSE WHO ARE SHOWING THEMSELVES TO BE ARSES - DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS? WELL, APPLY IT TO YOURSELF, FROM ME.
Bobbie Gentry was a class act, but it doesn't matter who does this song or what the arrangement is: it always sounds like the singer is doing a riff on Dusty Springfield.
Sorry, "Bobby", you may have it in the 60's-updo-weirdly-sexy-pants-suit-red boots-ugly-ass-polka-dot-tuxedo-bell-sleeve department, but Give me the Dusty Springfield version any day.
@dlh60 You are correct in calling me out.. I was being douchey. I apologize. I have no ill will against Ms. Gentry and I have since reformed myself in being a troll. I was trying to be partially funny, and I must assume that part of my attempt failed. Again my apologies.
back then you could fall in love with the song, and the singer. nice music, nice looks and dressing. i would have to be very, very drunk to wake up with lady ga ga. i prefer human, and modesty and feminine. i think back then the girls liked a man who - well they could not keep a straight face sitting across the table from kid rock. i love this gal and her songs.
As a young gay boy, all I ever wanted to be was a woman like this. I am not a drag queen, but I practiced for hours to Bobbie Gentry when I was a kid...just in case.
I enjoy listening to covers of great songs. Sometimes you can find some real gems...but other times NOT! LOL! This is okay, but the best cover I've found of this song is the one by Joss Stone.
I have been trying to track down Bobbi Gentry to do a greatest hits album for a long time with current country stars but I cannot find her. I have so many who want to collaborate with her and I am reaching out to the public to find her. Email is sdiro7@yahoo.com if you can have her reach me. She is a legend that many current stars want to team up with on her original duets. Johnny first gave me this idea the year before he passed Biobbi we are looking for you.
There is a person who looks a lot like her today, and she is very sexy. Her name is Kelly Monaco, she posed for Playboy, made Playmate videos and is now on General Hospital just about every day, and has become a great actress. She plays Jason Morgan's girlfriend Samantha, and was voted the sexiest woman in Daytime two years in a row! Joe
I remember riding in my Dad's car, listening to this song on the cassette tape he bought of one of her albums. It doesn't feel like that was almost 40 years ago.
@ChicagoSouthDan ...Thanks for that bit. I'd love to know what her kife is like now and how her and Jim Stafford's son turned out. With those two as parents he must be something! (O:
@Covellos1 I did an Internet search just now on Tyler Stafford and came up with a link to a singer-songwriter in his 20s in Reno, Nevada. However, it made no mention of Bobbie or Jim Stafford, so I don't know if that's their son and he does not want to cash in on their names or it is just some guy who happens to be named Tyler Stafford.
@ChicagoSouthDan Thanks alot for working on this! Bobbie was my favorite! I loved Jim Stafford's Mr Bojangles where Bobbie comes in at the end. I loved the movie Ode To Billie Jo. I thought it was great that they used Robbie Benson in it. I have all of Bobbie's Capitol LPS. Bobbie really sang some off the wall, but great music. Thanks again.
This track was from Bobbie's 1969 masterpiece album, 'Touch Em With Love' which produced Bobbie's biggest international hit' I'll Never fall In Love Again'. That track went #1 pop in the U.K and Australia, #5 in New Zealand and was a hit all throughout Europe even charting in Hong Kong.
"Son of a Preacher Man" is a song recorded by Dusty Springfield in September 1968 and featured on the album, Dusty in Memphis. Written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins, "Son of a Preacher Man" was originally offered to Aretha Franklin, who turned it down. It was only upon hearing Springfield's version that Franklin reconsidered and recorded the song herself.
Thanks for posting this, I used to wait for Ode to Billy Joe to come on the radio everyday when i was little, I loved that song and fell in love with Bobbie, got the album that year for xmas and wore it out/
Hey, I've been trying ffor days to see this clip but it keeps saying "error occured, try again". Is there anyway to get this back up and runnin' 'cause I love Bobbie?!
I still like Dusty's version better, but this is the only other version where the singer seems to know what the song is about. Most of the time, it ends up just being a showcase for the singer to belt it out, and all the yearning and seduction gets lost.
I'm a big fan of this version and Miss Bobby. Have you checked out Joss Stone's Music Hall of fame appearance doing this song? She has the same kind of appeal.
I was thinking of Joss Stone as one of those singers who just belts it out. Her version is fine as a vocal showcase, but it seems like the song gets lost. I guess making the song celebratory instead of longing is a valid take on it, though. Maybe I should hear more of Joss to get a better idea of what she sounds like.
Look speciffically for the video of Joss performing Son of a Preacher Man Live At UK Hall Of Fame. She gets it. Unsual for young women performers to be truly sexy these days, but she is. In an alluring way, rather than painfully blatant .
I just watched her again. She is what I call believable. You believe every word she's singing and every emotion she's feeling. It reminds me of the Righteous Brothers' studio version of Unchained Melody or You're My Heart and My Soul Inspiration, Bobby Hatfield's belting. You believe with all your heart that he feels that way.
I just listened to a few more songs by her. She's definitely talented, but she's never going to be one of my favorites. That's just a personal preference. She's more out of the Aretha school where I'd rather listen to Dionne or Dusty. Still, I have to admit she's one of the better young singers around.
I don't know if I think she is a perfect singer or anything, it's her very powerful presence, self assurance and keen sense of what it truly entertaining. Janis Joplin was not a perfect singer either, but she definitely stood out. I hope you got to see the youtube I mentioned, from the UK Hall of Fame ceremony.
Yes, thanks for pointing it out. I think you're right about her performance, powerful and self-assured. Plus, as a Beatles fan, I got a kick out of seeing George Martin in the audience.
This is how innocent things were years ago. Look at her posture on the chair. Today, even with as open as we are, I don't think many females would pose like this for their album.
I gave Joss Stone's version a listen and it IS a corker. I'll stick to my guns about the late Dusty Springfield's version being the best though. Bobbie Gentry's and Joss Stone's renditions are both very good and both are different enough to not be a carbon copy of the original and both of them are worth owning.
