I don't like the idea to make out of every movie part 2 and 3 and 4 and so on.. especially when the story did not come completely from Disney! When they invented something completely new (Lion King, Brother bear) a second movie is okay, but stories like Cinderella, Mulan or Arielle should end with the first part.... But this is just my opinion....

if you listen properly the connection between cinderella 3 and the little mermaid is that christopher barnes did the voice for Prince Eric in the original little mermaid but he also did the voice for prince Charming in Cinderella 2 and Cinderella 3

Cinderelly and prince are more beautyful here than in the classic movie. But Cinderella 's home and the palace were muce more wellpainted in the first movie (they seemed real). Additionally Lady Tremaine has no style in this movie. In the first movie, she was more... mysterious.

I think they did very well with it. It's obvious the animator isn't the same, but they clearly tried to capture the spirit of the original animation--and succeeded, I think. Certainly, they did much better with the animation here than in other Disney sequels. The Aladdin sequels for example.
